The Hand that Casts the Bone is the second book in the Vanguard Series and continues the journey of protagonist, John Vanguard, as he negotiates his way through a city rife with crime and corruption. A Grimdark gas lamp novel, The Hand that Casts the Bone follows We Men of Ash and Shadow in its themes of redemption, betrayal, and revolution. It was funny how everything came down to resources. Who had them, who wanted them, and who would die for them.

An enjoyable sequel with lots of setup

This one has the best aspects of character, situations, and circumstances that made the first fantastic. The only weaker aspect was the less compelling plot and all the setting up for the next book. Still ends with great relevance towards the greater story!

Fantastic story!! Absolutely flawless until a shift in the story from 60-90% kind of throws off some of the perfection. The direction by one character didn't seem warranted. That being said, the last 10% is phenomenal so overall, way more to love than be disappointed by.
