Historia
It's barely a few months since the shambling dead began to rise. Now nine people are trapped in an English country house together by the zombie horde outside. There's a journalist, a student, a professor, a surgeon, a housekeeper, a math teacher, a bank clerk, a taciturn Scotswoman, and a celebrity actor. They're strangers to each other. There'd be no reason for any of them to harm the others. And yet...before their first night in the house is done, one of them will be dead, and it will be clear to the others that among their number is a murderer.

Fantastic
Revisado: 07-18-21
If I could give this audio production a 7/5 stars, I would! This is an amazing story. The pacing is good, the inside jokes are good, the characters are vivid and real - this seems like a thing that could actually have happened, and that's fantastic. I LOVE IT.

Tragic Orphan Smorgasbord
Revisado: 07-18-21
I was surprised by how much I enjoyed this book.
When I went in, I was expecting either a very narrow story about a girl who had a strange relationship with nighttime celestial bodies, or an exposition-heavy fairytale-style rendition of one of several stories about a princess that either is the moon or lives on the moon.
It was neither.
Instead I got a very well fleshed-out set of characters, each with their own backstories (although after a while there are only so many variations on "lost my parents at a tragically young age" that one can come up with) and character arcs. The ending was a bit formulaic, but I found it satisfying. It might have been done with a bit more punch than it was, but I was not upset with the ending, so I'm happy to leave it as it is.
All in all, I think this is a book I will happily come back to and reread in the future.

Not Believable, but Fun
Revisado: 07-18-21
This one was surprisingly enjoyable, and even though it strained my suspension of disbelief at times, the story was fun. :)
I also really appreciated that the narrator was intimately familiar with the New Orleans and Cajun accents. No awkward fumbling or obvious flubs.
I'll file this one in "Smart Kids Fiction" with books like the Artemis Fowl and Half-Moon series.

Historia
In the town of Zombay, there is a witch named Graba who has clockwork chicken legs and moves her house around - much like the fairy tale figure of Baba Yaga. Graba takes in stray children, and Rownie is the youngest boy in her household. Rownie’s only real relative is his older brother, Rowan, who is an actor. But acting is outlawed in Zombay, and Rowan has disappeared.... This accessible, atmospheric fantasy takes a gentle look at love, loss, and family while delivering a fast-paced adventure that is sure to satisfy.

Amazing Dialogue, Lyrical Description
Revisado: 07-18-21
"What's a halberd?"
"If a spear and an ax had babies, they would be halberds. It's a poky-poky weapon that asks people taller than you to stay back, please."
Part of me says this book would make an awesome movie. The narrative voice is so vividly visual and its rhythm and pacing almost lyrical in places.
But then the rest of me reminds me that no illustrator would be able to reliably capture all those wonderful images, and the movie would probably turn out to be a complete bust, or at least a disappointed.
And I am again convinced that when I go to the movies, it should be for a movie, not for a book on screen.
This book is a blend of a classic kid thief story and clockwork magic, featuring found family and creative problem solving. Definitely worth a read if you like the sound of that. :)

Historia
On a dark, wintry day, Eliza Grey receives a mysterious letter from her ailing Nana Mora begging her to come for a visit. This is an easy "Yes". Eliza has always preferred Nana Mora's beach cottage on St. Simons Island to the apartment she and her mom call home in the city. The island is a magical place where stories and legends grow as thick as the Spanish moss dangling in the trees. Now, Nana Mora's eyesight is fading, and there's something she wants to show Eliza before it’s totally gone: a mythical place locals refer to as Sirens Harbor.

Fun, but Flawed
Revisado: 07-18-21
It's a really fun story and I liked the doubled angle of the little girl and her grandma's tales.
But though some characters were said to have accents, their vocabulary didn't show it, and some details came up incorrectly, like the sun setting into the ocean on the east coast, or coral growing at a depth sufficient to dim the sunlight.
A little research and forethought might have sidestepped those mistakes.

I love this character, I love this world. Her determination, sense of ethics, and shyness are all perfect. ♥️

Surprisingly Good

A surprisingly good integration of a dragonrider setting and a zombie apocalypse. The worldbuilding felt a little rushed, but the story is solid and the narrative pacing is good. I enjoyed it quite a bit.

In People to Be Loved, Preston Sprinkle challenges those on all sides of the debate to consider what the Bible says and how we should approach the topic of homosexuality in light of it.

Shallow Empathy
Revisado: 02-18-21
Very not okay with this book. I came to it looking for hope as a gay Christian, but it looks like there simply is no hope for me and my desire for a loving, monogamous, covenantial relationship with my partner. It looked like he might be sympathetic when he opened with a statement about challenging the conservative interpretation, chapter by chapter he dismisses every argument as either unfounded or misdirected, while giving no alternatives to those who live with this identity.
I do not recommend this book to anyone looking for hope in the gay Christian lifestyle.

Zero is just one of 20,000 people aboard a spaceship bound for a new planet set to be colonized. The journey is over a century long but luckily, everyone is in stasis, so they’ll be safe and sound asleep during the trip. Everyone that is, except for Zero, whose pod has malfunctioned, waking him up a hundred years early. His initial excitement in roaming the ship alone quickly turns to a heart-stopping interstellar adventure when a family of space pirates show up, trying to hijack the ship and take the colonizers hostage.

Kid Snark and Child Logic
Revisado: 12-30-18
"I know. You're a navigational computer. You've told me, like, a thousand times."
"I've told your four times. And Jim told you once."
"You were counting?"
"I'm a computer. Everything I do is counting."
The characters in this story are so vivid, I feel like I know them as well as I know myself. Zero especially won his way into my heart with a combination of kid snark and beautifully childish logic.
"Human beings require a wide range of vitamins and other nutrients. A diet of nothing but cheeseburgers and pies is not healthy."
"Yeah, but what are you going to do about it? You're just a navigational computer."
". . . That is accurate."
I will definitely reread this one!

Historia
On the surface, the Victorian age is one of propriety, industry, prudishness and piety. But scratch the surface and you’ll find scandal, sadism, sex, madness, malice and murder. Presented by Stephen Fry, this series delves deep into a period of time we think we know, to discover an altogether darker reality. The stories we’re told offer a different perspective on an era which underwent massive social change. As education, trade, technology and culture blossomed, why was there an undercurrent of the ‘forbidden’ festering beneath Victorian society?

Unnecessarily Juvenile
Revisado: 12-29-18
It was really interesting to learn more about the Victorian age, but it would have been nice to know it was as... "mature" as it was? I ended up skipping almost half the chapters, because I don't really want to hear about someone else's sex life, thanks. (Why does EVERYTHING come back to sex, anyway? *grumble grumble*)
This book seemed to revel in juvenile delight at sharing "dirty" secrets. Honestly, it would have been a lot more interesting if it hadn't.
