This exciting anthology includes a new novella featuring Mercedes Lackey's most popular heroines, Tarma (one of the sword-sworn and most feared of all warriors) and Kethry (who wields magic and weapons for the greater good), whose fates are suddenly bound together in blood by the powers that control their destinies.

Help for the reading order
Revisado: 12-29-24
Read chapters 1 and 3 first, then the book Oathbound, then this again, but skip chapters 2 and 4 which are also part of that book (though 4, Keys, has a brief opening from the accused's POV you may want to hear). Continue with the all but the last 3, which I believe occur after Oathbreakers, so read that, then come back here. One does need all 3 for the full story, as Oathbound is NOT fully included, though part is repeated here in the second and 4th stories.
There is further chronological shuffling one could do, if one cares to, but these are mainly standalone stories that can be enjoyed out of strict sequence.

A dozen years of peace have passed in the city of White Gryphon - providing well-deserved and much-needed security for the people who had lost their homes in the magical Cataclysm which killed the Mage Urtho, creator of the gryphons. But the inhabitants of White Gryphon have not forgotten their long struggles, and have trained an elite guard force, the Silver Gryphons, to protect their city, and if necessary, to join with the army of the Black Kings for mutual defense.

Tedious. Returned.
Revisado: 06-05-21
Tedious, trivial, dragging, unheroic, angsty, with a deus ex machina ending. Certainly not up to what I hope for from a favorite author.

Historia
More than 15 years after the events of The Handmaid's Tale, the theocratic regime of the Republic of Gilead maintains its grip on power, but there are signs it is beginning to rot from within. At this crucial moment, the lives of three radically different women converge, with potentially explosive results. Two have grown up as part of the first generation to come of age in the new order. The testimonies of these two young women are joined by a third: Aunt Lydia. Her complex past and uncertain future unfold in surprising and pivotal ways.

I actually liked this one a bit better
Revisado: 12-18-20
It's a little less surreal than The Handmaid's Tale and I think it does answer what happened to the handmaid questions and others.

Historia
Meet Threadbare. He is 12 inches tall, full of fluff, and really, really bad at being a hero. Magically animated and discarded by his maker as a failed experiment, he is saved by a little girl. But she's got problems of her own, and he might not be able to help her. Fortunately for the little golem, he's quick to find allies, learn skills, gain levels, and survive horrible predicaments. Which is good, because his creator has a whole lot of enemies …

Tim Gerard Reynolds levels it up
Revisado: 12-11-20
I like the story and the characters and the humor very well. I think the stat updates would be tiresome from a different narrator, but TGR just makes them, in effect, another amusing character. I doubt I would be a dedicated LitRPG fan, but it's used for decorative humor and an important plot driver here. The writing is quite good as read by TGR, so I spent the credits for 2 and 3. I can recommend it for fine entertainment!

Shapechangers. They were the Cheysuli, a race of magical warriors gifted with the ability to assume animal shape at will. For centuries they had been allies to the King of Homana, treasured champions of the realm. Until a king’s daughter ran away with a Cheysuli liege man and caused a war of annihilation against the Cheysuli race. Twenty-five years later the Cheysuli were hunted exiles in their own land, feared for their sorcery, their shapechanging.

Very annoying protagonist
Revisado: 10-31-20
Goodness gracious, what an aggravating portrayal of headstrong stupidity in character combined with feminine physical weakness. She never seems to learn to behave in any reasonable manner. The created world is interesting in many ways, but the girl is like an anti-Mary-Sue and made me so frustrated.

Chapters in correct order in Standard Quality format
Revisado: 04-17-19
The chapters are out of order if you download in High Quality single part format. If you switch to standard quality before you download, the chapters are in the correct order.
It seems like there are three parts and they are linked out of order, Part 2 first, then Part 1 starts at "chapter 15", then Part 3 at "chapter 25". If you want high quality, choosing mulipart downloads for this download can help as the sections are correctly labeled and in the correct order. These choices are in the download settings for some devices.

This is amazingly bad for the ratings
Revisado: 01-25-19
Poorly written with constant plot holes and inconsistencies. I had to stop wasting my time about halfway through. I was right to have not bothered with it when it was all the rage. I waited for the series to be completed and for a sale before I decided to try it.
Some specifics... Early on, from the mining tunnel sealed community, a pair climb through ventilation ducts for a brief time up to a domed garden from which they view stars and sunrise and it's... beautiful. Later one of them takes a lift a long, long, long way to the surface and is overcome by the amazing sunlight coming through the windows even before looking outside. Stuff like this abounds. First person viewpoint with recognition of items never before encountered by some... instinct. Exposition of character traits rather than demonstration. Tedious action that progresses nothing.
Hunger Games was significantly better written even if it's not among the best books I've read. This approaches that most closely amongst the speculative fiction I have read.
