A good story, pulled down by poor narration.
Revisado: 07-06-24
My 12 yr old granddaughters could narrate far better than this. Monotone, no voice acting, often no pause or change between scenes or people, so as to leave one confused as to who is speaking. She does have a full resonant voice, just not trained in how to use it. I paid for the book, so I listened and the story was just strong enuf to carry me thro. I'll read the next on kindle if it has same narrator.

Historia
A soldier raised as heir to an empire, Zarrah is motivated by two truths. The first is that the Veliant family murdered her mother. And the second is that her pursuit of vengeance will put every last one of them in their graves. The Endless War between Maridrina and Valcotta has raged for generations, leaving thousands of Zarrah’s people dead and countless more orphaned. So when she’s given command of the contested city of Nerastis, Zarrah is prepared to do whatever it takes to destroy the Maridrinian forces who oppose her. And to kill the Veliant prince who leads them.

poor narration

Micheal Pauley is a decided downgrade in narration from. previous books. Poor acting, strange choppy cadence, pronunciations of some words different than the female narrator. I stuck it out cuz the story was good.

Historia
The women of Hope River trust midwife Patience Hester, whose skill in delivering babies is known for miles around. But though the Great Depression is behind them, troubles are not, for Europe is at war...and it can only be a matter of time before the US enters the fray. And while some are eager to join the fight, Patience’s husband, Daniel, is not. Daniel is a patriot - but he saw too much bloodshed during the First World War and has vowed never to take up arms again. His stance leaves Patience and their four children vulnerable as the government imprisons Daniel for his beliefs.

storyline good, narrator ok
Revisado: 11-01-21
This is my 3rd Patricia Harman midwife book. Enjoyed storyline and characters of each. The change to the new narrator of this 3rd book took some getting used to. Her style is more rapid and more clipped than the narrator of the first 2 books. Not quite as enjoyable for me, but she does act/emote well.

A+ Author AND Narrator!
Revisado: 01-04-21
I knew this was a spellbinding story, from watching a couple seasons, but I love the character development, the inner thoughts/doubts that you are privy to in the book. The way the author says things....wow she can spin a story. Must have taken a barrel full of historical research.
I'm picky about narrators, but she is a dream. Womens' and mens' voices. British, French , Scottish accents with all inflections. She read Gaelic, and even Latin with a French accent! How do you do that? Unreal! What a delight!

Narrator brought down story
Revisado: 10-16-20
Strong story line. Narrator has good diction and energy, but faky; not believable. inflections wrong for what's being portrayed, implying she isn't reading a few words ahead, or is not anticipating what's coming. I'd download next in series if they changed narrators.

Historia
Two words: the bullet. That's all it takes to shatter her life. Caroline Cashion is beautiful, intelligent, a professor of French literature. But in a split second, everything she's known is proved to be a lie. A single bullet, gracefully tapered at one end, is found lodged at the base of her skull. Caroline is stunned. It makes no sense: She has never been shot. She has no entry wound, no scar. Then, over the course of one awful evening, she learns the truth.
