Historia
Pat Conroy is without doubt America's favorite storyteller, a writer who portrays the anguished truth of the human heart and the painful secrets of families in richly lyrical prose and unforgettable narratives. Now, in Beach Music, he tells of the dark memories that haunt generations, in a story that spans South Carolina and Rome and reaches back into the unutterable terrors of the Holocaust.

two books crammed into One

I really enjoyed The Prince of Tides, decades ago, and when browsing Audible I saw this title and realized it was Pat Conroy who wrote the PoT. Even though it took me aback to see it was 23 hours of narration, I thought, well,I like Conroy so let's go. I started listening and LOVED it, until the plot got diverted into telling the Holocaust backstories of the parents and grandparents of the major protagonists. These lengthy iterations of the horrors of that time were (imho) not essential to understand the motivations of the major and the minor characters. I found myself wanting to speed through yet another horrible Nazi story to get back to the drama unfolding in South Carolina with the McCall family. The narrator was fine, he did all the voices from little girls to old Eastern European men very believably. The main(South Carolina based) story was very good. I felt like the Holocaust information could have been condensed tremendously, like 90% edited out, and the listening would have been much more satisfying, Conroy writes dialogue and descriptive and reflective prose very well. Just needed a tougher editor for this novel

Historia
It's summer in the Dordogne. The heirs of a Périgordian sheep farmer learn that they have been disinherited, and their father's estate sold to an insurance company in return for a policy that will place him in a five-star retirement home for the rest of his life. But the farmer never gets his life of luxury - he dies before moving in. Was it a natural death? Was there foul play? Bruno begins the investigation that leads him to several shadowy insurance companies owned by a Russian oligarch with a Cypriot passport.
