Offering aid. To find answers. To seek truth. But who can be trusted? And who secretly plots to destroy him? LA private detective Dave Martial seems genuine, but who is the man really? Then there is Special Agent Elroy Jones, and the enigmatic Dr. Elizabeth Grant who seems to know more about him than he knows of himself. Are their motives pure? Or is there more than lies beneath the surface?

Among the best memory loss thrillers
Revisado: 02-19-25
Traumatic memory loss seems to be the current meta plot of choice, replacing protagonist with eidetic memory. But fear not, this novel brings Rogue, a protagonist with both memory loss and eidetic memory. Okay, that sounds pretty hokey, and it is. But let the suspension of disbelief linger because this story runs at 100 MPH from start to finish -A great pager-turner with a memorable cast of characters. I'm already looking forward to Book 2 of the series in New York, where our gun-slinging hero learns more about his past.

Historia
December 1941. America teeters on the brink of war, and in Honolulu, Hawaii, police detective Joe McGrady is assigned to investigate a homicide that will change his life forever. The trail of murder he uncovers will lead him across the Pacific, far from home and the woman he loves; and though the U.S. doesn't know it yet, a Japanese fleet is already steaming toward Pearl Harbor. Spanning the entirety of World War II, Five Decembers is a beautiful, masterful, powerful novel that will live in your memory forever.

Detective novel set during WWII Pacific Theater
Revisado: 01-07-23
Easily one of the best books I've listened to in some time. Joe McGrady is the protagonist in a story centered in Honolulu with travel to Hong Kong and Japan - spanning US involvement in WWII. Though is in the Noir style of detective novels (Hammett and Chandler), the book feels original in many ways. The writing is sharp, with apt descriptions of each scene and with interesting dialogue. Unlike many other books I read, I didn't ever feel like this story was either too long or too short and the pacing is always just right. The cover also shows a memorable scene from the book.
I give this book my highest marks and two big thumbs up. One warning - once you pick up Five Decembers, it will be hard to put down.

A satisfying spy novel with Americans, Russians and Iranians. The three-way interplay was interesting throughout the book. Narator was top-notch as well.

Historia
A man. His ex-girlfriend's cat. A sadistic game show unlike anything in the universe: a dungeon crawl where survival depends on killing your prey in the most entertaining way possible. In a flash, every human-erected construction on Earth - from Buckingham Palace to the tiniest of sheds - collapses in a heap, sinking into the ground. The buildings and all the people inside have all been atomized and transformed into the dungeon: an 18-level labyrinth filled with traps, monsters, and loot.

The premise of the book is really stupid and full of sophomoric humor. I haven't played D&D since college almost 40 years ago, so am generally curmudgeonly towards these types of books. However, the reviews are great, so I thought why the hell not.
Warning: Babies are killed and there are many vividly detailed descriptions of killing things with bare hands and feet.
Even with all of this - one of the funniest laugh out loud books I've read in years. Bonus: Jeff Hays is so damned good as narrator. Get this audiobook!

The Blacktongue Thief covers some interesting new territory on well-trod ground. Not sure what I liked better - the story or Buehlman's own narration. I hate to give any part of the plot, but know that this is a great page turner.

Ending makes up for dreary middle

Enjoyable read with a good and unexpected finish. I was frustrated through much of the book as the protagonist was the most hapless investigator since the Detective Clouseau. Narration is excellent.
