Outstanding historical fiction writing

Loved the character development and the raw words used to describe events. It felt like I was right there with the characters.

Historia
As the war begins, Hanna Rombauer, a young German woman, is sent to live with her aunt and uncle after her mother’s death. Thrown into a life of luxury she never expected, Hanna soon finds herself unwillingly matched with an SS officer twenty years her senior. The independence that her mother lovingly fostered in her is considered highly inappropriate as the future wife of an up-and-coming officer and she is sent to a “bride school.” There, in a posh villa on the outskirts of town, Hanna is taught how to be a “proper” German wife.

Character Development

The narrator was good at changing voices for each character. Character development was detailed and brought the story to life. Recommend if you like WWII historical fiction.

Historia
For twenty-year-old Harp Devereaux, life should be idyllic. At university, she feels for the first time in her life that she belongs, her mother Rose is running the Cliff House as a successful business, and her childhood sweetheart JohnJoe is by her side, but the storm clouds of war grow ever darker. For eight hundred years Ireland has made numerous bids for her freedom but now, at last, liberation from British rule is tantalisingly close, if the men and women of the revolution can just hold on.

Character development
Revisado: 01-20-24
The characters are well described Nd the author keeps things clear when going from one character interaction to a different one. Some receptiveness in the chapters to help set the scene which could have been left out. Enjoy the reader’s dialect and tone while reading the story. Looking forward to listening to the final book in the series.

Historia
The day Titanic sails from Queenstown, taking with it the hopes and dreams of so many, Harp’s life too is devastated. The small port town is shaken to its foundations at the loss of the unsinkable ship, but the revelation of a long-held secret means that Harp and Rose have a much more pressing issue to solve, one that could destroy them if they cannot find a solution.

Depth of young character
Revisado: 01-01-24
The writer gave a old soul feeling to a young girl in the early 1900’s. The writing took a person’s mind into the scene easily. Great character development.

Historia
Liesl Bannon has never felt like she was truly at home anywhere, not since her mother placed her and her brother Erich on the last Kindertransport out of Berlin in 1939. She’d been so much more fortunate than most Jews, saved from the horrors of the Nazi regime. Being adopted by Elizabeth and Daniel Lieber meant she and Erich spent the war in Northern Ireland, safe and loved, but Liesl always knew something was missing. When an opportunity to return to Berlin to represent her university presents itself, she is so torn.

Great character development and vivid words to describe the scenes. Liked that the book series started at the beginning of WWII and proceeded forward to have characters become adults.

Historia
Growing up on their hardscrabble farm in rural Kentucky, 15-year-old Albertina "Bertie" Winslow has learned a lot from her mama, Polly. She knows how to lance a boil, make a pie crust, butcher a pig, and tend to every chore that needs doing. What she doesn't know, but is forced to reckon with all too soon, is how to look after children as a mother should. When Polly succumbs to a long illness, Bertie takes on responsibility for her four younger siblings and their dissolute, unreliable daddy.

A good reminder
Revisado: 10-06-23
The book had a slow start and seemed to time jump in a way that was harder to ow. Once into the third chapter, it was easier to understand, so keep with it. The pain and misunderstandings are seen in many families today.

Historia
Chemist Elizabeth Zott is not your average woman. In fact, Elizabeth Zott would be the first to point out that there is no such thing as an average woman. But it’s the early 1960s and her all-male team at Hastings Research Institute takes a very unscientific view of equality. Except for one: Calvin Evans; the lonely, brilliant, Nobel–prize nominated grudge-holder who falls in love with—of all things—her mind. True chemistry results.

So many have raved about this book so thought I would try. I could not finish it bc it went to slow for me. The history context was good, but found it to go to slow in the story telling.
