Historia
English magicians were once the wonder of the known world, with fairy servants at their beck and call; they could command winds, mountains, and woods. But by the early 1800s they have long since lost the ability to perform magic. They can only write long, dull papers about it, while fairy servants are nothing but a fading memory.

A wonderful book and a truly exceptional reader
Revisado: 10-31-24
Wonderful world building and characters and such a pleasure to listen to for the beauty of Clarke’s language and the amazing virtuosity of Simon Prebble’s reading—what a delight to listen to his many voices, especially that of The Gentleman with the Thistledown Hair.
Like many long fantasy novels, this one suffers from a bit of bloat in the middle, but it’s worth a bit of wading to get to the end—and I’m so glad that there are now more stories from this world! Heading to those next.

An excellent sequel
Revisado: 09-06-22
I didn’t absolutely love The Miniaturist, but I liked it enough to want to see what the author did next. At first I thought I was going to be disappointed; the beginning didn’t grab me, in part because so much time is spent in long, thinky passages about the interior lives of the characters at the expense of action. But then it hit its stride and hooked me, and I stayed hooked even through a very extended ending. It seems clear that there will be a third installment in the story and I look forward to reading it.

A bit hacky
Revisado: 07-05-22
Like others, I’d listen to the next book in the series if it were free but am not willing to pay for it. I had the same problems a number of other commenters have had: a rather simple plot, glaringly anachronistic language, and lots of repetitive statements—the main character’s constant lamenting on the misogyny of her society, which suggested that the author didn’t trust readers to pick up on it without that guidance, and also her constant grateful musing on her good fortune in having as much as she did compared to most people, which also checked the anachronism box. Trimming all of this might help to pick up the pace.

Historia
Rumor has linked Queen Elizabeth I to her master of the horse, Robin Dudley. As gossip would have it, only his ailing wife, Amy, prevents marriage between Dudley and the Queen. To quell the idle tongues at court, the Queen dispatches Ursula Blanchard to tend to the sick woman's needs. But not even Ursula can prevent the "accident" that takes Amy's life. Did she fall or was she pushed? Was Ursula a pawn of Dudley and the Queen?

Great story, slightly weird reading style
Revisado: 07-01-22
The reader’s style was different than the writer’s I thought—rather a cute style, suggesting a cute, rather simple story. Much cozier than the story itself, which I’d say sits toward the edge of the cozy zone.

Historia
It is the late 14th century, a dangerous time beset by war and plague. Nicholas Barber, a young and wayward cleric, stumbles across a group of travelling players and compounds his sins by joining them. Yet the town where they perform reveals another drama: a young woman is to be hanged for the murder of a 12-year-old boy. What better way to increase their takings than to make a new play, to enact the murder of Thomas Wells?
But as the actors rehearse, they discover that the truth about the boy's death has yet to be revealed.

Reader is getting carried away
Revisado: 02-03-22
This might be a good story and I was just unable to tell because I was so distracted by the hyper delivery of the reader. I couldn’t take it and had to bail.

Can’t stand the reading style
Revisado: 01-27-22
I’ve only made it through the epilogue and the first little bit of Chapter One and I’m giving up; as the previous reviewer said, the narration is unbearable. I feel like I’m being shouted at.
