Historia
Moments after Lisbeth is born, she’s taken from her mother and handed over to an enslaved wet nurse, Mattie, a young mother separated from her own infant son in order to care for her tiny charge. Thus begins an intense relationship that will shape both of their lives for decades to come. Though Lisbeth leads a life of privilege, she finds nothing but loneliness in the company of her overwhelmed mother and her distant, slave-owning father.

Historia
In her memoir You Could Make This Place Beautiful, poet Maggie Smith explores the disintegration of her marriage and her renewed commitment to herself in lyrical vignettes that shine, hard and clear as jewels. The book begins with one woman’s personal, particular heartbreak, but its circles widen into a reckoning with contemporary womanhood, traditional gender roles, and the power dynamics that persist even in many progressive homes.

Left feeling sorry for her ex husband
Revisado: 04-28-23
The author has a beautiful, engaging writing style but by the time it was over I was so tired of the whining I felt sorry for her ex-husband! Too many uses of the f word. Political statements were completely unnecessary and distracted from the story. I'm sure some of it may help people who are going through divorce and abandonment but this is just too much. I purchased it by mistake thinking it was a memoir of the "real" Maggie Smith. I almost returned it when I realized it wasn't and now I wish I had.

Historia
When Savannah history Professor Everly Winthrop is asked to guest-curate a new museum collection focusing on artifacts recovered from the steamship Pulaski, she's shocked. The ship sank after a boiler explosion in 1838, and the wreckage was just discovered, 180 years later. Everly can't resist the opportunity to try to solve some of the mysteries and myths surrounding the devastating night of its sinking. Everly's research leads her to the astounding history of a family of 11 who boarded the Pulaski together, and the extraordinary stories of two women from this family.

Missed opportunity for a good historical fiction
Revisado: 03-02-23
The author missed an opportunity for a good historical fiction. The present day accounts were just too syrupy and the narrator for the main character was so whiny -- as is the main character. Totally unenjoyable. Wasted credit. I hope I can find a better book on this tragedy as it is very interesting, just ruined by the story line this author took.

Revisado: 11-18-18
Very disappointing after reading the book summary. I thought there would be more mystery. I kept waiting for it to get to the point where I couldn’t stop listening, but it never got there.

Well Worth Reading
Revisado: 10-23-17
Hearing the plight of children caught up in a horrible adoption system is difficult, but I feel we owe it to them. Lisa Wingate has managed to create endearing characters in a historically accurate setting that we'd rather not know existed. I tried to patiently listen to the book only on my commutes to appointments, but when it got near the end I couldn't stand not knowing how it ended. While the romance developing between two of the main characters was predictable, at least it only made up a small part of the story. Well worth the read. We do owe it to the children who were caught up in this system to remember their stories.

Historia
Two cousins, Rory and Arden, lie unconscious in a hospital burn unit. The fire, which broke out in their shared college dorm room, killed another student, and the police want answers. Tension between Rory and Arden's parents was already at an all-time high before the fire, owing to a recent financial crisis and the decline of the family business. As the parents huddle anxiously in the waiting room, carefully avoiding the subject of their own unraveling relationships, disturbing truths come to light.

On the right side of the law. Sort of. Sebastian Rudd is not your typical street lawyer. He works out of a customized bulletproof van, complete with Wi-Fi, a bar, a small fridge, fine leather chairs, a hidden gun compartment, and a heavily armed driver. He has no firm, no partners, no associates, and only one employee: his driver, who's also his bodyguard, law clerk, confidant, and golf caddy.
