I seem to differ from a lot of reviewers here in that I found the narrator too distracting to be able to follow the story. His accents were indeed wonderful, giving each character a life of their own. I could picture each person perfectly, befitting their particular class and station, personality, etc. but the actual reading of the story was often halting, with pauses in the middle of a sentence as if at a page break. I found I was subconsciously waiting for each future instance and was too distracted.
I ended up returning this edition and am going with Simon Vance- tried and true.
The book is definitely Dicken’s very best. I’m late to his writings and I find I’ve started to think of him as a writer in line with Shakespeare- something for any intellect to appreciate in every book. And I’ve yet to read any Dicken’s book that I haven’t cried- in sadness or joy.

I enjoyed this book so much!
At first I wondered if I could get past the “stiff, old-fashioned” style of writing and I’m glad I stuck with it. The narration was excellent- many voices and accents, male and female- he really brought the story to life. It has been billed as the first detective novel and I found I was interested to find out whodunnit as I have been with any more modern story. Highly recommended.

I’ve enjoyed the Longmire books immensely. And George Guidall is the best narrator in the business.
I was very disappointed that Johnson has strayed into disturbing territory. Do we really need to hear about such gruesome displays as the “soccer ball” and the human auction consequences? This is bordering on torture porn which I try to avoid in movies and TV. Apparently I need to do the same with audiobooks that I figured were pretty safe, like Longmire.

I was thinking of discontinuing my audible account, trying to save a few bucks, but I've discovered the Longmire series and have changed my mind.
This book has a little of everything: good mystery, great characters, a bit of adventure and a little sardonic humor. I couldn't wait to get back to it.
I wish I knew these folks in real life.

Stephen King rarely disappoints- a really great story and characters- good and bad- that you want to find out more about.
I always default to King's books when I can't seem to find anything that holds my interest. Is that a good or bad recommendation? I'm not sure, but they're dependable, at the very least, thought-provoking and suspenseful at their best.
The narrator was great- I had to get past his slightly nasal delivery at first but then each characterization was consistently apt and accurate to their personality. Well done.

Great story, great characters, very engaging all around- I'm a big fan of Chabon's work- The Adventures of Kavalier and Clay is one of my top 5 and this one is as engrossing and interesting.
I only wish the narrator had a better grasp of the pronunciation of basic Yiddish words like yarzheit and Kiddush.

This one made me have to admit- Stephen King is a good writer. The story was engaging, humorous, scary at times, with a nice little twist at the end.
What really made it a great experience was the narrator. Her delivery- and accent- made me forget I was listening to a book- more like I was sitting across from her, listening to her story.
I was looking for a "light read" and got much more.

Narrators spoil it

This is such a great story and I want so much to listen to the whole thing but the narrators are both distracting and monotonous at the same time.
The female narrator has a habit of reading to the end of a line as if there is a period then putting the wrong emphasis on the beginning of the next, as if it's a new sentence.
They both lack the acting nuances to pull off the emotion that is written so well in this book.
It's a darn shame.

The performances on these plays are top notch, every one.
The stories themselves are depressing and sad. The characters are wonderfully fleshed out and real but maybe a little too real.
I'll only listen to the rest if I need a good cry.

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

Different narrator

How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?

More complexity. More red herrings, even.

How could the performance have been better?

The narrator's accents were atrocious. The Scottish sounded like Romanian (or something), the American/Canadian was all over the place. And why did he have to yell every time one of the Scots spoke? It was distracting, to say the least.

Any additional comments?

I'm 3/4 of the way through and may not be able to finish because I can't really pay attention to the story with all the ridiculous accents being hurled at me.
