Historia
For the last 100,000 years, we Sapiens have accumulated enormous power. But despite all our discoveries, inventions, and conquests, we now find ourselves in an existential crisis. The world is on the verge of ecological collapse. Misinformation abounds. And we are rushing headlong into the age of AI—a new information network that threatens to annihilate us. For all that we have accomplished, why are we so self-destructive? Nexus looks through the long lens of human history to consider how the flow of information has shaped us, and our world.

Historia
A white-knuckle account of the First Infantry Division’s harrowing D-Day assault on the eastern sector of Omaha Beach - acclaimed historian John C. McManus has written a gripping history that will stand as the last word on this titanic battle. Nicknamed the Big Red One, First Division had fought from North Africa to Sicily, earning a reputation as stalwart warriors on the front lines and rabble-rousers in the rear. Yet on D-Day, these jaded combat veterans melded with fresh-faced replacements to accomplish one of the most challenging and deadly missions ever.

Historia
It was 23 months after his accident, and Peter was still dealing with constant excruciating pain. He'd seen dozens of doctors and tried a myriad of medications, but nothing seemed to work. Faced with the impossible choice of suffering through the rest of his life, he had an unlikely epiphany, "If I could somehow hike 2,000 miles on the Appalachian Trail, then my leg will have to be better." He set a starting date three weeks out, cobbled together a novice's pack, and set off on a journey destined to change his life forever—though not exactly how he had envisioned it.

Revisado: 07-31-23
A good to great trail memoir... inspirational outside of the trail community for those living w/ chronic pain and the very complicated nature of chronic pain. As an older hiker w/ aspirations to hike the trail... it lends an aspect of growth, persistance, preparation and never giving up. Loved the book!

Historia
For decades we've been told that positive thinking is the key to a happy, rich life. "F*ck positivity," Mark Manson says. "Let's be honest, shit is f*cked, and we have to live with it." In his wildly popular Internet blog, Manson doesn't sugarcoat or equivocate. He tells it like it is - a dose of raw, refreshing, honest truth that is sorely lacking today. The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck is his antidote to the coddling, let's-all-feel-good mind-set that has infected modern society and spoiled a generation, rewarding them with gold medals just for showing up.

Historia
Despite her success setting a self-supported Fastest Known Time record on the Pacific Crest Trail in 2013, Heather “Anish” Anderson still had such deep-seated insecurities that she became convinced her feat had been a fluke. So two years later she set out again, this time hiking through mud, rocks, and mountain blazes to crush her constant self-doubt and seek the true source of her strength and purpose. The 2,189 miles of the Appalachian Trail, from Maine to Georgia, did not make it easy.

Whining whining whining
Revisado: 08-13-21
Admire the accomplishment. Tried of the constant whining. Actually feel sorry her self worth was so low to punish yourself like that to prove to yourself you are not a failure.
First book I've stopped in a long time.
I pray she's doing well.
Edit: I went back and finished the book to see if it turned a corner. Although I won't give that away, I still feel empathy for her a lot more than admiration.

Revisado: 01-20-21
Read Matterhorn 1st, then read What It's Like to Go to War. It may help to fully appreciate what a masterpiece Matterhorn is, to do a quick study on the decisions from WWII thru Johnson & Nixon & the Pentagon Papers to appreciate what a wonderful work the novel Matterhorn is, capturing the politics, the futility of war w/o clear goals, race relations, leadership & the failure of, etc.. all woven into the tapestry of Matterhorn.
This book, What it's like to go to war, is a masterpiece of insightful reflection on the enormous burden and tax placed on those carry the burden of life and death to war. This reflection on psychology, leadership and the moral balance and distortion war creates is a refreshing and valuable work that succeeds in making the reader better for having listened to it.
Bronson Pinchot.. amazing job of narration in both books!

Ulysses S. Grant's life has typically been misunderstood. All too often he is caricatured as a chronic loser and an inept businessman or as the triumphant but brutal Union general of the Civil War. But these stereotypes don't come close to capturing him, as Chernow reveals in his masterful biography, the first to provide a complete understanding of the general and president whose fortunes rose and fell with dizzying speed and frequency.

So much more than expected....
Revisado: 07-03-18
This book surprised me! Grant is / was so much more than Vicksburg and Appomattox Court House. Grant deserves a place in the top 5 US Presidents and a prime spot for US leaders who tried to make a change for civil rights. A much better man, general and president than I had ever known or given him credit for. Read this book!
