Historia
Cyril Avery is not a real Avery - or at least that's what his adoptive parents tell him. And he never will be. But if he isn't a real Avery, then who is he? Born out of wedlock to a teenage girl cast out from her rural Irish community and adopted by a well-to-do if eccentric Dublin couple via the intervention of a hunchbacked Redemptorist nun, Cyril is adrift in the world, anchored only tenuously by his heartfelt friendship with the infinitely more glamourous and dangerous Julian Woodbead.

Irish accented actors brought the story alive! And what a great story!
Revisado: 12-07-23
While this is a story about a gay man’s life in the latter half of the the 1900’s, with all the corruption and hypocrisies of the Catholic church, it doesn’t come off as “a Gay story”. It’s more about how the church fails its many characters. A full rich story spanning many decades. With high & very low points, the central character (Cyril Avery) discovers who he is, and how to love. The witty writing conveys the Irish sense of humor, and makes for an enjoyable read - in spite of so much tragedy. I loved it!

Historia
Patrick, or Gay Uncle Patrick (GUP, for short), has always loved his niece, Maisie, and nephew, Grant. That is, he loves spending time with them when they come out to Palm Springs for weeklong visits, or when he heads home to Connecticut for the holidays. But in terms of caretaking and relating to two children, no matter how adorable, Patrick is, honestly, overwhelmed. So when tragedy strikes and Maisie and Grant lose their mother and Patrick's brother has a health crisis of his own, Patrick finds himself suddenly taking on the role of primary guardian.

I ended up loving this book
Revisado: 07-24-23
I’m gay. I tend NOT to cozy to cliché gayness, and this book started off - well, a bit cliché; flaming characters. But I warmed up to the story, and the kids - especially Grant. In the end this is a story about the old Rolling Stones song, “you can’t always get what you want but sometimes you get what you need“. This is what happens when a gay Asian sitcom actor living in Palm Springs ends up, caring for his college best friend’s kids after she dies, and her husband goes into rehab. It’s a summer of discovery and recovery. It left me smiling and happy in the end.

As one of the music world’s most iconic artists and the cofounder of the organizations ONE and (RED), Bono’s career has been written about extensively. But in Surrender, it’s Bono who picks up the pen, writing for the first time about his remarkable life and those he has shared it with. In his unique voice, Bono takes us from his early days growing up in Dublin, including the sudden loss of his mother when he was fourteen, to U2’s unlikely journey to become one of the world’s most influential rock bands, to his more than twenty years of activism.

Revisado: 05-24-23
Read by Bono himself; considering his massive success, his delivery is surprisingly humble. I stopped being a fan of U2 before the 90s but I always liked the music -though I’ve listened to their free album. So, not a fan - I enjoyed his autobiography

Sam and Sadie—two college friends, often in love, but never lovers—become creative partners in a dazzling and intricately imagined world of video game design, where success brings them fame, joy, tragedy, duplicity, and, ultimately, a kind of immortality. It is a love story, but not one you have heard before.

Surprisingly pleased
Revisado: 03-27-23
The performance was fantastic and easy to listen to. I felt like a fly on the wall being exposed to a world. I am not a part of, being over 60 and not a gamer at all. Sure, this is a love story. But that’s the least important aspect of this book. For me, it was my exposure to a profession I’m completely unfamiliar with, and I enjoyed the book.

Historia
Like so many of us, McKibben grew up believing—knowing—that the United States was the greatest country on earth. As a teenager, he cheerfully led American Revolution tours in Lexington, Massachusetts. He sang “Kumbaya” at church. And with the remarkable rise of suburbia, he assumed that all Americans would share in the wealth. But fifty years later, he finds himself in an increasingly doubtful nation strained by bleak racial and economic inequality, on a planet whose future is in peril. And he is curious: What the hell happened?

Hard to take - but many should read
Revisado: 02-23-23
I struggled through this book as the author recounts personal life experiences and relates them to historical events and episodes that have brought us to our present state of stark divisions, and dysfunction. It’s a recount of the processes we go through, and I’m reminded how humanity has evolved very little socially since Ancient Greece. The actor reading the audio version I listened to had a “Rod Serling” tone of eminent doom- which I didn’t like.
But still, I recommend reading this book. Unfortunately, those who might benefit most from the enlightenment it offers likely won’t read it.

As fires devastate most of the United States, Lark and his family secure a place on a refugee boat headed to Ireland, the last country not yet overrun by extremists and rumored to be accepting American refugees. But Lark is the only one to survive the trip, and once ashore, he doesn’t find the safe haven he’d hoped for. As he runs for his life, Lark finds an abandoned dog who becomes his closest companion, and then a woman in search of her lost son. Together they form a makeshift family and attempt to reach Glendalough, a place they believe will offer protection.

Sad but wonderful
Revisado: 02-23-23
A fictional scenario of a post climate change apocalyptic earth; an escape from the violence and chaos of a collapsed American government, and the venture across the Atlantic to Ireland and the pursuit of refuge and safety. Helen, the black fox, and lark, a young man, and the hero beagle, Seamus become life long friends. Our trio find their way to safety salvation in Glen Dulough of the Wicklow mountains in Ireland. The writing keeps you going though the subject is very sad. The actor reading is marvelous. I highly recommend this book to anyone anxious about the path we seem to be on climate-wise.

In this brilliant book, Isabel Wilkerson gives us a masterful portrait of an unseen phenomenon in America as she explores, through an immersive, deeply researched narrative and stories about real people, how America today and throughout its history has been shaped by a hidden caste system, a rigid hierarchy of human rankings. Beautifully written, original, and revealing, Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents is an eye-opening story of people and history, and a reexamination of what lies under the surface of ordinary lives and of American life today.

Enlightenment for the roots of racism
Revisado: 11-17-22
This book was enlightening for me as a white middle class male raised in suburban white Detroit. It’s a great follow up from “Warmth of Other Suns” about “the great migration “ by the same author. At times I felt enlightened, other times depressed at the seemingly unfixable influence affect and effect of racism. But I come away with a better understanding of the root causes of racism. It a struggle to correct, but worth every effort.

Hollywood fictional bio
Revisado: 10-12-22
Would you be surprised to find out that Marilyn Monroe was gay? Would you be amazed to find out that Brad Pitt is bisexual? This book is about neither of this two. But this book contains such surprises. Entertaining, well written and just plain interesting. Although it’s totally fiction I can’t help but believe there’s a lot of truth.

Historia
From the author of the acclaimed The Brother Gardeners, a fascinating look at the founding fathers from the unique and intimate perspective of their lives as gardeners, plantsmen, and farmers. For the founding fathers, gardening, agriculture, and botany were elemental passions, as deeply ingrained in their characters as their belief in liberty for the nation they were creating. These stories reveal a guiding but previously overlooked ideology of the American Revolution.

Historia
From 1915 to 1970, this exodus of almost six million people changed the face of America. Wilkerson compares this epic migration to the migrations of other peoples in history. She interviewed more than a thousand people, and gained access to new data and official records, to write this definitive and vividly dramatic account of how these American journeys unfolded, altering our cities, our country, and ourselves.

An eye opener
Revisado: 03-21-22
I was pleased with the writing & performance right from the start, but it was the incredible discovery of facts about “the great migration “ that opened my eyes to the Black American experience. You’ll follow three main individuals as they, each for their own reasons, left the oppression of the South for points north & west. A truly pleasureable exposé for this white man (getting over my own racial programming.).
