Excellent review and rethinking of how we have interpreted this wonderful story of the first years of the church. The 7th chapter alone makes it worth the price of the book. NT Wright does not disappoint.

Emily’s story of life with her autistic son doesn’t hide the hard challenges. But it also highlights the joy found in embracing Max as he is, meeting him where he is, and coaxing him to learn and grow. It is full of inspiring and humorous stories of the effect Max has had on those around him, and how he truly became a blessing to his family, his church, and his community.
Emily is as inspiring as her son in her stubborn commitment to find resources to serve her son and help him achieve all of his potential. And to find all the bridges, banana trees, and vacuums Max’s heart could ever desire! Get to know Max and Emily! They are unforgettable.

I was expecting to read a long version of Leanne’s comedy routine. And there was plenty of that. But it was also a thoughtful look back over 50 years. Lots of wisdom and so relatable. If you are a fan, you should definitely read or listen to What in the World?!

A peek behind the camera and into the life of the “third Gilmore girl.” Interesting to hear her take on life on Broadway in the 50s and 60s, getting her start as a dancer. I knew nothing about Kelly before Gilmore Girls, so most of it was new to me and gave great context to the actor I’d learned to love as Emily. If you are a fan of Stars Hollow, then it’s a must-listen!

Although well over a decade and several election cycles old, this description of culture and thought from the Roman Empire until today is very up-to-date. It brings us full circle from the paganism and empire-worship of the Romans to its second iteration today. It’s a long journey, but the author does a great job of showing how thought has influenced culture throughout history. Definitely recommend.

Remember what you learned about the Roman and Greek culture that directly influenced our Western democracies? Your teachers probably left out a lot. And maybe you thought the early Christians were a lot like today’s Christians, except more pure and perfect. Also, not accurate. This study looks at the true religious culture of the first century Roman Empire. They were not all stoics and certainly not atheists. They believed in hundreds of gods. The author describes the true nature of everyday Greco-Roman religion and then explains how weird and different the Christian faith would have seemed. It’s a fascinating story. Read by the author, who is an excellent narrator.

I did get bogged down in the middle. Almost quit at one point. But the plot turned just in time. The irritating characters grew and became loveable or at least understandable. Exploration of loss—through the eyes of three characters—is excellent. The capacity for gratitude and compassion—despite their losses of son, father, and freedom—is beautiful and hopeful.

Not a deep dive into scripture, but a different take on some familiar biblical characters. Sophie encourages women to form close relationships with both older and younger generations as a way to share life and share the gospel. She uses three pairs of women from scripture, plus memorable stories of women from her family and friends. Like having a long conversation with a dear friend.

Osman is becoming a better writer before our eyes (or ears). I loved the first two, but this is the best by far. A few new memorable characters that I hope will turn up again in book 4 or 5. Joyce has become my favorite, but they are all so memorable. Wouldn’t we all love to have a group of friends like this to grow old with?

I always wondered about the Tada marriage, thinking they must be some exceptional saints to make it work. It was great to get a peek behind the curtain and see that they struggled with some of the same issues other couples do. Joni’s celebrity and busy life were probably as big an obstacle as her disability. And Ken also struggled with depression and other personal issues. Amazingly, her cancer diagnosis drew them closer and helped Ken see the role God had for him. They do not minimize her suffering, which is an encouragement to others who are dealing with cancer, extreme pain, and other problems. But they always hold up Christ as our ultimate hope. So encouraging!
