Historia
Recruited by British Intelligence to infiltrate the IRA and Sinn Féin during the height of the Northern Ireland Troubles, they were ‘agents of influence'. With codenames like INFLICTION, STAKEKNIFE, 3007 and CAROL, these spies played a pivotal role in the fight against Irish republicanism. Now, for the first time, some of these agents have emerged from the shadows to tell their compelling stories. Agents of Influence takes you behind the scenes of the secret intelligence war which helped bring the IRA's armed struggle to an end.

Interesting piece on the intelligence efforts of the British in the north of Ireland. Most of it I had read in other books but I still enjoyed it. Of course heavily biased towards the British forces occupying the six counties. No mention of collusion to kill Catholics or other atrocities now well documented. Good read.

The search for justice for this one man's death—his body found in broad daylight, with tape over his eyes, an undisguised hit—would deliver more than the truth. It exposed his status as an informant and led to protests, campaigns, far-reaching changes to British law, a historic ruling from a senior judicial body, a ground-breaking police investigation, and bitter condemnation from a US Congressional commission.

Great summary of the dirty war in the Irish - British conflict
Revisado: 05-24-24
This book perhaps given the recency of the writing does a nice job of pulling together other similar investigations into the undercover war in Ireland. Of course it has the usual pro British slant focused on IRA accountability while of course no such effort on the already much discredited British shadow forces who did indeed have a license to kill its fellow citizens. But worth reading.

Historia
Today, Tipperary-born priest Patrick Ryan cuts a modest but strong figure, to the layperson. A man of God who has been entrusted with the confessions of hundreds of earnest parishioners. But in fact his story is dark, dramatic, and pivotal to Irish history, on both sides of the border. In The Padre, award-winning investigative journalist Jennifer O'Leary exposes the paramilitary exploits of notorious former Catholic priest and active IRA supporter Patrick Ryan–exposing details which have, outside of his very guarded circles, been unknown until now.

Irish Nationalism at its Finest
Revisado: 03-26-24
FR Ryan was clearly a man with deep regard for his nationalist heritage. While lots of individual actions in these wars for independence are certainly unfortunate and regrettable it is clear hat they are necessary. As Ireland is poised regaining its independence Fr Ryan’s actions are among the reasons for it.

In the aftermath of the 2020 presidential election, Donald Trump and many around him, including certain other elected Republican officials, intentionally breached their oath to the Constitution: they ignored the rulings of dozens of courts, plotted to overturn a lawful election, and provoked a violent attack on our Capitol.

Revisado: 03-04-24
For the first time a sitting President connives to remain in power. Scary how many of our elected officials went along. Frankly I’m very concerned as to just how many of my fellow citizens are either that stupid or at best that gullible. But 3 years later they still buy the lies. Anyone that supports Trump is simply not American.

Historia
Freddie Scappaticci was born in 1946 and raised in a deeply nationalist area of Belfast. When the Troubles broke out in 1969, he joined the Provisional IRA, where he quickly rose through the ranks, becoming commander of Belfast in 1984. From the outside, Scappaticci appeared to be a dedicated volunteer, but inwardly, he had become disenchanted with the IRA and, in 1977, he started working for British intelligence.

Always interesting how your own team will give you up for pennies or to stay out of jail. Real insight and potentially devastating to the British government. Actually allowed someone to commit murder in order to protect a highly placed source. Wow - so much for British justice .

Historia
1992. All across the United States respectable, upstanding citizens are showing up dead. These deaths could be accidents, and they don’t appear to be connected—until a fatal fall from a high-floor window attracts some unexpected attention. That attention comes from the secretary of defense. All of a sudden he wants an interagency task force to investigate. And he wants Jack Reacher as the army’s representative. If Reacher gets a result, great. If not, he’s a convenient fall guy.

Historia
1975: A young Irish-American man joins an elite US Marine unit to get the most intensive military training possible—then joins the Irish Republican Army, during the days of some of the bloodiest fighting ever in the Irish-British conflict. It is a story that will see him running guns with American mobster—and secret IRA fundraiser—Whitey Bulger; running from safe house to safe house in the Irish countryside, one step ahead of British troops; fending off a recruitment offer from the CIA; and being one of the masterminds behind a campaign to take out London's electrical system.

Very insightful
Revisado: 10-12-23
Great read. John does a great job of framing the actual reason for the conflict in Ireland - the pursuit of a 32 county democratic republic. I love the contrast with our war of independence, the parallels are very compelling. If you want to cut through the centuries old British narrative this is a must read.

Historia
Fishers of Men is the true account of secret operations in Northern Ireland carried out by the British Army's most clandestine unit. It tells the unique story, through Rob Lewis' own extraordinary experiences, of an essential instrument in the fight against terrorism, that of covert intelligence gathering. The men and women who work in this field are a special breed who undertake hazardous risks with unflinching tenacity and professionalism - the price of negligence is high and the need for secrecy must be preserved even at the expense of personal relationships.

Revisado: 10-05-23
Obviously the Brit establishment heavily edited this. Interesting to hear how a member of the FRU a totally discredited group found guilty of colluding with loyalist paramilitaries try to make it sound that they had morals and standards. At what point to they become terrorists? Still an interesting read.

As one of the music world’s most iconic artists and the cofounder of the organizations ONE and (RED), Bono’s career has been written about extensively. But in Surrender, it’s Bono who picks up the pen, writing for the first time about his remarkable life and those he has shared it with. In his unique voice, Bono takes us from his early days growing up in Dublin, including the sudden loss of his mother when he was fourteen, to U2’s unlikely journey to become one of the world’s most influential rock bands, to his more than twenty years of activism.

Bono does a great job of narrating the history of U2. Love he kept his head on his shoulders during what had to be a road filled with potential potholes. Very proud to be a fellow countryman of such a great artist and philanthropist. Born up the road but hopefully we’ll be one people again soon.
