Historia
Mark Mathabane was weaned on devastating poverty and schooled in the cruel streets of South Africa’s most desperate ghetto, where bloody gang wars and midnight police raids were his rites of passage. Like every other child born in the hopelessness of apartheid, he learned to measure his life in days, not years. Yet Mark Mathabane, armed only with the courage of his family and a hard-won education, raised himself up from the squalor and humiliation to win a scholarship to an American university.

Mark Mathabane's experiences and his writing are astonishing. I've listened to this book twice now, the second time with my adolescent children on the way to school. What a story, what a gift that he was willing to tell it to us. I am deeply grateful.

I really enjoyed listening to this book - the human drama and the elephant drama. Very well told, well narrated. I got lost in it (in the very best way).

Entertaining and fun
Revisado: 10-15-19
Listened to this on a long family road trip and it kept us all engaged and awake. We were able to draw many comparisons and some contrasts to the Harry Potter series, but the similarities weren't too annoying or daunting. I appreciated the musical soundtrack that accompanied the scenes - for example, Pachabel's Canon in D playing in the background when the students played that piece in a scene. My children both study violin so it was a good glimpse at and interesting perspective of some famous pieces of music for them. The story is about the magic of music, but for some reason the idea that ghosts exist was hard for the characters to believe - this disbelief within the story was a little dissonant for me. The narrator's voice as the protagonist was a little cloying (you know, the way it sometimes is when a bright saccharine female voice narrates adolescents). Her voice was just fine in portraying the voices of other characters. Overall, worth the read and we appreciated hearing it.

Historia
Tokyo resident Keiko Furukara has never fit in - neither in her family, nor in school - but when at the age of 18 she begins working at the Hiiromachi branch of national convenience store chain Smile Mart, she realizes instantly that she has found her purpose in life. Delighted to be able to exist in a place where the rules of social interaction are crystal clear (many are laid out line-by-line in the store's manual), Keiko does her best to copy the dress, mannerisms, and mode of speech of her colleagues, playing the part of a "normal" person excellently, more or less.

Our family just listened to this sweet and quirky story and were increasingly drawn into the subtle drama underlying an otherwise upbeat and very unique story about a woman’s job in a convenience store. It’s a love story in a way, and that love wins. It’s also a snapshot of a particular thread in Japanese society. We loved it. Excellent narration too.

Great book about science, the work of scientists, and citizen science. Got it at the library then knew I had to buy it on Audible to share with my family. Thanks, Dr. Dunn! It’s a book for all ages. I asked my kids’ science teacher to assign it to her middle school classes. Very accessible and engaging.

Historia
In the small village of Kilbane, County Cork, Ireland, Natalie's Bistro has always been warm and welcoming. Nowadays twenty-two-year-old Siobhan O'Sullivan runs the family bistro named for her mother, along with her five siblings, after the death of their parents in a car crash almost a year ago. It's been a rough year for the O'Sullivans, but it's about to get rougher.

Historia
During World War II, black Americans were fighting for their country and for freedom in Europe, yet they had to endure a totally segregated military in the United States, where they weren't considered smart enough to become military pilots. After acquiring government funding for aviation training, civil rights activists were able to kickstart the first African American military flight program in the US at Tuskegee University in Alabama. While this audiobook details thrilling flight missions and the grueling training sessions the Tuskegee Airmen underwent, it also shines a light on the lives of these brave men who helped pave the way for the integration of the US armed forces.

So educational and memorable
Revisado: 01-02-19
Such an important aspect of US history - so well written and narrated. Thank you! Listened with my children who absorbed it all. Their great grandfather was a WWII bombardier so this book meant so much to me, that they learn this history. We had already listened to a book by Booker T. Washington so listening to this was very special for that reason too - to learn more about the legacy of Tuskegee. Precious history. Watching a film about the army air corps in WWII, my 8 year old started explaining anti-aircraft weapons and I asked How did you know all that?! And he looked at me puzzled and said “Because we learned about the Tuskegee Airmen!!!!” All thanks to this audiobook! So grateful this is available. Thank you.

The Earth is definitely getting warmer. There's no argument about that, but who, or what, is the cause? While the vast majority of scientists who study the environment agree that humans play a large part in climate change, there is a counterargument. Author Gail Herman presents both sides of the debate in this fact-based, fair-minded, and well-researched book that looks at the subject from many perspectives, including scientific, social, and political.

Great intro for kids and adults
Revisado: 01-01-19
What is Climate Change? is a clearly written introduction for kids and their parents. Explains what climate means and how it’s more than the weather on a given day. Describes why climate change and temperature increases over time matter. Introduces the work of science in studying the problem. Apolitical. Important for our kids to hear and understand as they have heard about climate change and this a more complete answer to the title’s question than what I could have offered.
