Historia
Already widowed by the age of 40, Ilka Nichols Jensen, a school portrait photographer, leads a modest, regimented, and uneventful life in Copenhagen. Until unexpected news rocks her quiet existence: Her father - who walked out suddenly and inexplicably on the family more than three decades ago - has died. And he's left her something in his will: his funeral home. In Racine, Wisconsin. Clinging to this last shred of communication from the father she hasn't heard from since childhood, Ilka makes an uncharacteristically rash decision and jumps on a plane to Wisconsin.

Too many bodies
Revisado: 02-06-21
Well, I now know much more about funerals than I wanted to know. This suspense story is set in a Racine funeral home. There is a "who done it" to be discovered as well as many other things. Who do we owe money to, why does everyone want the business, are my employees loyal? Not all these are answered, leading to the subsequent books.

What happened to Lenny?
Revisado: 01-30-21
Is there a conspiracy or not? What a way to confuse a murder. Decker won't quit and keeps pushing. An interesting new character is seen but then is up in the air at the end. There is some closure at the finish, but not a cut and dried solve.

Wooden
Revisado: 01-19-21
Well, Atlee and John Puller have joined forces. Seems like something is missing. The Puller side of the story is finished, I think, but in a ho-hum way. Atlee makes progress on her quest to find her sister. All in all, the characters are fairly wooden and there seems to be a lot of fortuitously found information. I think I'm done with this series.

Renaissance man
Revisado: 01-11-21
So I read the second book first. It was good enough to go back to the beginning. Glad I did. This establishes many of the references that are talked about in #2, so the picture is clearer now. This too is a good story. A lone (loner) cop is hunting a serial killer of architects. Sam Carver is a Renaissance man. He plays the piano a bit and reads. He appears like someone I'd like to meet. I hope the series continues.

When will they learn?
Revisado: 01-03-21
Once again the editor was napping. But aside from being too long, the story was fun and engaging. Now that the humans are on a par with the other senior species, it's time to set some rules. But, before that happens the bad guys just had to point out that humans aren't so great after all. Once the housekeeping is done Joe and Skippy go to work and rise from one crisis to find another waiting at the end.

Nils work is conflicted because he is now in love and more sensitive to the risks involved. Elly wakes him up. What a weird ending though. The narrator changed with this edition, the volume levels between Nils and Jamison were very different. You could hardly hear and understand whenever Jamison spoke.

Secrets are a problem
Revisado: 04-05-19
Coben's books are always difficult to put down. This is one is no exception. There are a few wisecracking characters, but here they are only on the sidelines. The lead is a man who cares about his family. A family he thought had no secrets. He was wrong. Finding his missing daughter takes him into an uncomfortable world where secrets abound. He finds the answers and...

Historia
Beginning with opium, the “joy plant,” which has been used for 10,000 years, Thomas Hager tells a captivating story of medicine. His subjects include the largely forgotten female pioneer who introduced smallpox inoculation to Britain, the infamous knockout drops, the first antibiotic, which saved countless lives, the first antipsychotic, which helped empty public mental hospitals, Viagra, statins, and the new frontier of monoclonal antibodies. This is a deep, wide-ranging, and wildly entertaining book.

Required reading for those who take a pill
Revisado: 03-31-19
This is a book everyone can read - and should. It builds a coherent history of our world of drugs. It starts with the first drug, opium and follows the development of many drugs we use today. The author doesn't focus on the most popular drugs of today, but the ones that are representative of that class of medicine. This is an important contribution for those who enter in the debates on the merits of drugs and big pharma. The author also talks about vaccination and makes it clear its importance.

Historia
Detective Dave Robicheaux’s world isn’t filled with too many happy stories, but Desmond Cormier’s rags-to-riches tale is certainly one of them. Robicheaux first met Cormier on the streets of New Orleans, when the young, undersized boy had foolish dreams of becoming a Hollywood director. Twenty-five years later, when Robicheaux knocks on Cormier’s door, it's to ask about a young woman he found who’s been crucified. She disappeared near Cormier’s Cyrpemort Point estate, and Robicheaux, along with young Deputy Sean McClain, are looking for answers.

Historia
When a peculiar letter arrives inviting Armand Gamache to an abandoned farmhouse, the former head of the Sûreté du Québec discovers that a complete stranger has named him one of the executors of her will. Still on suspension, and frankly curious, Gamache accepts and soon learns that the other two executors are Myrna Landers, the bookseller from Three Pines, and a young builder. None of them had ever met the elderly woman. The will is so odd and includes bequests that are so wildly unlikely that Gamache and the others suspect the woman must have been delusional.

What now Armand?
Revisado: 01-25-19
Armand continues to steadily solve all the problems that confront him. Always with the help and respect of his associates. This story didn't have much of the Three Pines goings-on but the characters are all there and as richly painted as always. It is always a pleasure to read this series. What's next?
