The rise of AI has the potential to transform our future more than any other technology - and there's nobody better qualified or situated to explore that future than Max Tegmark, an MIT professor who's helped mainstream research on how to keep AI beneficial.

Illuminating humanity once again
Revisado: 01-11-23
I love the way that Stephen King illuminates what it is to be human. He’s done it again here, not his best, but certainly worth reading.

Historia
Here is the story of Klara, an Artificial Friend with outstanding observational qualities, who, from her place in the store, watches carefully the behavior of those who come in to browse, and of those who pass on the street outside. She remains hopeful that a customer will soon choose her. Klara and the Sun is a thrilling book that offers a look at our changing world through the eyes of an unforgettable narrator, and one that explores the fundamental question: What does it mean to love?

Incredible story and performance
Revisado: 08-24-21
There’s something incredibly light but beautiful about the story, and the performance brings this out perfectly. I will be thinking about the story for a long time, and I highly recommend it to anyone who is curious about how technology will blend with society in the future.

Historia
For all of neuroscience's advances, we've made little progress on its biggest question: How do simple cells in the brain create intelligence? Jeff Hawkins and his team discovered that the brain uses map-like structures to build a model of the world - not just one model, but hundreds of thousands of models of everything we know. This discovery allows Hawkins to answer important questions about how we perceive the world, why we have a sense of self, and the origin of high-level thought.

Now we’re getting somewhere in AI
Revisado: 04-05-21
This appears to be the first theory in artificial intelligence and brain science that actually lays out an architecture of the brain consistent with the experimental evidence and that provides a pathway to actual intelligence. Finally – progress lies ahead.

Historia
A powerful new theory of human nature suggests that our secret to success as a species is our unique friendliness. For most of the approximately 300,000 years that Homo sapiens have existed, we have shared the planet with at least four other types of humans. All of these were smart, strong, and inventive. But around 50,000 years ago, Homo sapiens made a cognitive leap that gave us an edge over other species. What happened?

Historia
"Correlation does not imply causation". This mantra has been invoked by scientists for decades and has led to a virtual prohibition on causal talk. But today, that taboo is dead. The causal revolution, sparked by Judea Pearl and his colleagues, has cut through a century of confusion and placed causality - the study of cause and effect - on a firm scientific basis.

Groundbreaking book
Revisado: 07-02-20
This book is groundbreaking into areas. The first is the revealing of how we can understand causality in our world, something I never gave much thought to before. Second is how causality and it’s three stages can be applied to artificial intelligence to create reasoning moral robots and thinking machines that can become an accepted and useful part of human society. Truly astounding!

Historia
Time is precious. The world is waiting. Rediscover yourself. The Great Alone is the epic adventure of a relatable explorer. Why does a 44-year-old father leave his family for six months to walk 4,286 km across America on the Pacific Crest Trail? What effect does it have on his marriage? on his children? and on himself? Following his intuition, Tim Voors decided to embark on a life-changing hike, feeling alive, being afraid, pushing through pain, confronting emptiness and starting a passionate romance with the wilderness.

The nitty-gritty of the PCT
Revisado: 12-27-19
This book is focused largely on the day-to-day details of life hiking the PCT. The reader gets a full view of what this is really like. And enough details about relationships on the trail and some background of the author’s life flesh out the human stories involved. I would highly recommend it to anyone thinking about hiking the PCT, or to those armchair hikers who would like to experience the trail vicariously. Highly recommended.

Historia
This lush novel, set in 1766 England and America, evokes an era ripe with riot and revolution, from the teeming streets of London to the sprawling grounds of a Virginia plantation. Mack McAsh burns with the desire to escape his life of slavery in Scottish coal mines while Lizzie Hallim is desperate to shed a life of sheltered subjugation to her spineless husband. United in America, their only chance for freedom lies beyond the Western frontier - if they're brave enough to take it.

Historia
Frank Schaeffer has a problem with Dawkins, Hitchens, Harris, Dennett, and the rest of the New Atheists—the self-anointed “Brights.” He also has a problem with the Rick Warrens and Tim LaHayes of the world—the religious fundamentalists. The problem is that he doesn’t see much of a difference between the two camps. As Schaeffer puts it, they “often share the same fallacy: truth claims that reek of false certainties.

Richard K. Morgan has received widespread praise for his astounding 25th-century novels featuring Takeshi Kovacs, and has established a growing legion of fans. Mixing classic noir sensibilities with a searing futuristic vision of an age when death is nearly meaningless, Morgan returns to his saga of betrayal, mystery, and revenge, as Takeshi Kovacs, in one fatal moment, joins forces with a mysterious woman who may have the power to shatter Harlan's World forever.

Narration killed this book for me
Revisado: 04-06-18
I could only listen to a small portion of this book before I had to give it up because of the naration. The narrator sounds like a cross between Jimmy Stewart and John Wayne and has very little nuance in his voicing and hardly any variety in the tempo of his delivery. This is unfortunate, because Todd McLaren did an outstanding job in the first two books. I’d gladly listen to this book if it is ever recorded again with Todd McLaren as the narrator.
