A Nice Crime Story Read
Revisado: 04-03-19
This is the book of which the Netflix series 'Mindhunter' is based. The series does a better job of tying it all together, while the book has greater details and more stories.
The book is basically a series of anecdotes about various investigations, investigatory techniques and psychological conclusions. While interesting, they lack a connecting thread of an overall story.
I enjoyed the book, the narrator was a wonderful choice, sounding like a cast member from Dragnet.

Nice effort, worth refining...
Revisado: 04-03-19
The message and intention of this book is wonderful. The telling of the story of Jesus here on earth from a more human engaging with humans in a practical way is worth telling. Miller weaves a wonderful portrayal of Jesus in this light.
I have used this book and the associated 'Person of Jesus' Bible Study materail with my adult education class for the last 8 months. It has been a surprisingly wonderful enlightening journey.
However, the writing is a bit simple and light.
The narration is rather poor. The recording is weak, where you can easily here page turns and many uncorrected errors in the narrator's reading of his own work.
Hopefully, it will be worth having a professional narrator one day record a cleaner version.
The good news, the performance did not substantially take away from the message.

I'll take the blame...
Revisado: 04-03-19
I have enjoyed Alan Arkin's work since I first saw him in movies such as "the Russians are Coming...", "Wait until dark", and "the In-Laws". I found him to be funny and talented. having read biographies by William Shatner, Steve Martin, Rob Lowe and other celebrities, I had picked up this Audible book with nary a glance at the description.
Well, I was in for a big disappointment. This is not a biography, but a series of stories about Alan's mental/spiritual journey into wackiness, and I don't me funny wackiness.
I think this might have been a freebie from Audible, and if it was, I am glad I did not spend a credit on it.
Wow, did i ever get a callous on my index finger as I hit the forward 30 second button my on app while enduring this title.

Nice Inside look into a Rob
Revisado: 04-03-19
Rob does a fine job of sharing his life and career with the listener. Not only do I feel I know him and what he is about better, but I found his read enjoyable and very approachable. I even went back to rewatch some of the older movies he was in back in the 80's. My time in the book was a pleasant surprise.

Some potential - but found lacking
Revisado: 04-07-17
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
More depth and timeliness. 6 hours was not enough for me. Previous great courses spanned 15 - 20 hours. Some topics passed way too quickly.
If you’ve listened to books by The Great Courses and John L. Esposito before, how does this one compare?
More depth and timeliness. 6 hours was not enough for me. Previous great courses spanned 15 - 20 hours. Some topics passed way too quickly. Compared to the course I took on Chinese history, this course hardly competes.
What about Professor John L. Esposito’s performance did you like?
it is what it is. A professor reading his notes.
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?
I was disappointed that there was not more depth and the overall feeling that the professor was an apologist, overlooking some issues, or taking minor reform movements claiming them to be widespread.

Historia
Unlike all previous versions of rock 'n' roll history, this book omits almost every iconic performer and ignores the storied events and turning points everyone knows. Instead, in a daring stroke, Greil Marcus selects 10 songs recorded between 1956 and 2008 and then proceeds to dramatize how each embodies rock 'n' roll as a thing in itself in the story it tells, inhabits, and acts out - a new language, something new under the sun.

Wow, trust the reviews - they warned me
Revisado: 10-30-15
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
First of all the writing is so distorted, disjointed and meandering, that you would have to start there to fix this hot awful mess.
What do you think your next listen will be?
A better written history of rock and roll.
What didn’t you like about Henry Rollins’s performance?
Maybe it was the writing, but the stilted and stiff narration wore on me in 30 minutes.
Any additional comments?
Trust the reviews, I read them and many told me to avoid the book. The topic intrigued me and I went ahead and clicked away, wasting a credit. Thanks fellow readers for warning me, next time I promise to listen.

Historia
Virtually all human societies were once organized tribally, yet over time most developed new political institutions which included a central state that could keep the peace and uniform laws that applied to all citizens. Some went on to create governments that were accountable to their constituents. We take these institutions for granted, but they are absent or are unable to perform in many of today’s developing countries—with often disastrous consequences for the rest of the world.

Way too deep for my tastes
Revisado: 10-10-14
Is there anything you would change about this book?
Leave out all the first chapters on primates and prehumans, It is all speculation and not based in sufficient scientific proof.
Would you recommend The Origins of Political Order: From Prehuman Times to the French Revolution to your friends? Why or why not?
I would only recommend this if this was a specific interest to the reader. Even as a poli sci minor graduate, I found this book contained way too much depth.
Did The Origins of Political Order: From Prehuman Times to the French Revolution inspire you to do anything?
Yes, skip a chapter now and then.

It was the 70's and it shows.
Revisado: 10-10-14
If you could sum up Easy Riders, Raging Bulls in three words, what would they be?
confused muddled excess
What was one of the most memorable moments of Easy Riders, Raging Bulls?
The back story of the making of Easy Rider.
What do you think the narrator could have done better?
I found the narrator's heavy gruff voice and accent a bit off putting.
Any additional comments?
I love movies, directors and the stories behind the 115 minutes of entertainment we see on the silver screen. I grew up watching many of these movies in the theaters and remember them dearly. In this light, I enjoyed the book.
However, I found the overall style of writing a bit confusing. Chapter story line were so intermingled at times, with so many characters, that I was at times confused who was who and what movie they were talking about.
lastly, if everything was true, in terms of personal life choices, by the real life persons in the book, it is amazing anything was every produced and that many of them are still alive. What a hard way to live; careless sex, drugs, alcohol, and back stabbing vengeance should have taken a greater toll.

A soft quick run through the final story of Patton
Revisado: 10-10-14
If you could sum up Killing Patton in three words, what would they be?
familiar Patton history
What was one of the most memorable moments of Killing Patton?
the various points used to show that Patton had a target on his back due to his loud voice, casuing problems for both the USA and USSR.
Which scene was your favorite?
Details leading up to the accident and the accident itself were insightful.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
Patton: Love him or hate him, he was our hero.
Any additional comments?
I found the book a light easy to read (listen) history of the end of WWII. Many chapters in the book seemed to be pulled right out of movies on similar topics. Some stories seemed to be included, not so much for moving the story along, but to make connections with the reader and other media they had previously seen. Some of the stories of Hitler's bunker, Rommel, Bastogne and the concentration camps, while interesting, were only mildly connected to the story

Revisado: 05-12-14
What made the experience of listening to The Fall and Rise of China the most enjoyable?
This was my first listen to a course serries on Audible. I was unsure what to expect. The author/professor's depth of knowledge and ability to provide details and nuanced meaning of the historical events were invigorating to the topic.
What other book might you compare The Fall and Rise of China to and why?
I am a fan of Barbara Tuchman and this narration seemed similar to me.

great insight into China is today and how they got there. Much ground work is covered to establish what makes the Chinese tick. Wonderful insights.
