Historia
To eight-year-old Bela, her family is her world. There’s Mommy, Daddo, and Grandma Ruth. But there is also Other Mommy, a malevolent entity who asks her every day: “Can I go inside your heart?” When horrifying incidents around the house signal that Other Mommy is growing tired of asking Bela the question over and over, Bela understands that unless she says yes, her family will soon pay. Other Mommy is getting restless, stronger, bolder. Only the bonds of family can keep Bela safe, but other incidents show cracks in her parents’ marriage. The safety Bela relies on is about to unravel.

Too much philosophizing to a little kid
Revisado: 08-23-24
The book was really creepy! I loved it. Then the author robbed me of that by the almost non-stop parental angst (the mother’s voice in this made me want to slap her repeatedly) and overthinking (and way too much talking) about life and the meaning of life and people who makes mistakes and, and, and….. yah. Anticlimactic.

Loved the story hated the narrator. The voices he used were awful and he whistled when he talks. Can’t even finish it.

Whiny Main Character
Revisado: 01-08-24
The narrator talks with her teeth. All
of her “d”s are “t”s and it drove me nuts. As these books continue though, the main character whines more, complains more, and insists on her independence and feminism while simultaneously making stupid decisions and leaning on men. She doesn’t work at being a witch and whines about her lack of confidence. She’s constantly complaining that she needs to “do better” and then consistently doesn’t. There isn’t much character growth in these books even given the limited subject matter. Sure would have been nice to see her growing into her power and relationships rather than increasing her complaints and blaming others for her own ridiculous decisions. But…

The End was rushed
Revisado: 11-28-23
Loved the story and characters but the author seemed to have the entire book wrapped up and tied with ribbons in the last hour of the book. The rest of the book wandered all over the characters’ lives so the end wasn’t as satisfying.

Meh. But not because of politics.
Revisado: 09-24-23
I have enjoyed getting to know Holly all this long while even before she had her own storyline. This book was frightening- but only in the ways every day life is frightening since 2016 for some and 2019 for others. It would have been nicer to escape the reality of our scary world and read something scarier. Maybe for Steven King, the current sociopolitical climate is as scary as it gets.

Historia
In 2008, nine mountaineers failed to return from a winter backpacking trip in the New Mexico mountains. At their final campsite, searchers found a bizarre scene: something had appeared at the door of their tent so terrifying that it impelled them to slash their way out and flee barefoot to certain death in a blizzard. Despite a diligent search, only six bodies were found, two violently crushed and inexplicably missing their eyes. The case, given the code name “Dead Mountain” by the FBI, was never solved. Now, two more bodies from the lost expedition are unexpectedly discovered in a cave.

The constant change in volume is excruciating
Revisado: 07-15-23
The narrator is clearly talented, but the constant increase and decrease in the volume of his reading makes hearing him really really hard and irritating for someone who is hard of hearing. There’s just no reason for this. I get that you’re being dramatic, but please keep in mind that you’re reading book not a screenplay.

The narrator did a fabulous job, the story was interesting and engaging, and while I didn’t feel like I needed to stay glued to the book from start to finish, it kept me coming back. I’m sad I’m done with it.
