That damn ending...

I had many issues with this story and the MC, still do to be honest, for much of the latter half of this book I would've been hovering somewhere around a 3.5~4 star rating...but that damn ending. Ok so there where many moment in this book where obvious solutions cropped up and while this is explained away eventually the fact that the MC never even consider a few of them had me banging my head against the wall. Honestly the actions of most of the primary characters annoys me even now, and even the final resolution was a bit off to me. And yet I find myself almost begrudgingly loving the conclusion to the story, once everything is out there and the whole picture is laid bare you see a masterful win along with a significant amount of character development from the MC along with a good ol' dose OPness that honestly hit me in a spot I'm a bit uncomfortable with. Objectively this is a slightly better than average LitRPG story....but I'm bias so I'll sing it's praise and say it's awesome.

Good overall plot, characters and character development is a bit... meh for me, MC and the love interest act like teenagers (I mean seriously they're in their 30s, talk it out and don't grunt at each other, you're both grown). That being said they're also both emo as hell to, but it's not too unbearable so I kinda let it go. Interesting enough magic system, a smidge to heavy on the stats but I just listened to a book that was way worse so I'm feeling much more forgiving on that front. The other characters so far seem fine, well written and rational (seriously though the 19 year old acts more mature than he MC and old girl but i digress). There is one moment early on of blinding MC stupidity that had me worried, but it didn't repeat itself (not to that degree), so I was able to get over it. Ultimately my biggest knock is the narrator, he's not awful but not great, seems like he might be new to this so fair play to him. If I find out this is his very first book narration then he gets a +1 star handicap and a "eh, good job" from me. But at the moment 3 stars is the best I can give it. I'll probably end up getting book 2 at some point, which lets be honest is the most telling endorsement anyone can give.

Fair warning I only made it about 10 hrs in and if I hadn't already recently returned 2 books I would definitely return this one now. I have many many problems with this book, but I just don't have it in me to properly break this down so I'll be making this brief. This is the worst kind of power fantasy.

I don't mind broken/OP MCs, in fact I quite like them when they're done right, but that's so rare that I don't mind reading/listening to them done okay. The problem with OP MCs is that they are so very difficult to do even passably much less well, and unfortunately this author was not able to do either. The MC is definitionally a Gary Sue, I can hardly think of another example so apt (which is saying something considering what I've read in the past, many Chinese and Korean webnovels). It started off bad and got worse. I would not be surprised if the MC turns out to be God all mighty (literally). Let me put it this way the only real character in this book (at least as much as I got through) is the MC, every other character seem to be there sole to appreciate the awesomeness of the MC.

This whole thing feels like a self insert power fantasy of the worst sort. Where every man wants to follow the MC and every female wants to sleep with him. I look back at some of the reviews and can't help be think they're trolling, either that or they were paid for/bots. At least I hope so, otherwise I just....I just don't know.

This gets a 2 star purely for the performance and even that...honestly Adam Verner gets the credit. Didn't like the production on the performance, but I think that if the story was better I might've enjoyed it more. The story annoyed me so much that it made the production grating to me....tempted to drop this to a 1 star. On the bright side in a few months I'll be able to return this and maybe at that time there might be a good book I can listen to. I want to say something constructive to the author but I don't have it in me at the moment. Uhm get an experienced editor who will give you constructive feedback and rein in your chunni tendency. OP MCs aren't inherently bad, but writing makes or breaks them.

Like I said in the headline really liked the beginning, the MC and setup was interesting a relatively novel. But then it started to become more.... I wanna say troupey (don't think that's a word). It went from a different take on a system apocalypse story to something much more typical. It's not bad by any measure, but I started to get bored. It just felt like I read it already. I felt like the author had a very interesting initial premise but didn't quite know how to fill it out so he fell back to a more basic story. I think this book is probably to long. The author might have been better served breaking it down into 2 books at around 12 hours each while cutting a few things that honestly felt like padding. I just listened to the book and there's easily about 4 hours of content that I can barely remember. All in all a decent book, but not jumping out of my seat for the next one.

I'm gonna be honest I don't know if I like this authors writing style. I've listened to the first 3 books of Alpha Physics as well as the first book in this series and I enjoy general plot, but can't help but struggle through the actual books, honestly not sure why. Overall though I'd give this author a solid 4/5, there's nothing major I can point out that completely turns me off in any of his books and the basic premise tend to be interesting, I'll even say that for this book...until the end. I can't say it outright because it's a major spoiler, but the ending introduces a major plot hole. One that isn't even necessary, to kinda tiptoe around it the author shoves in another antagonistic force which I for the life of me can't understand why. He stacked the decks against the MC quite a bit already (even if I find the whole reborn hunt/crusade thing a bit ridiculous), and the difficulties the MC faces is more than enough to counter the regressor perks. Adding this new element in makes what was already a extremely difficult task pretty much impossible without an even more ludicrous level of dues ex machina than what's already baked in, which is a lot but I let slide since the whole inciting incident for this story is one big dues ex machina. Okay honestly I lied, if one were to follow the logic of this stories universe then this new element that the author added...just wouldn't be an issue, which is why I say it's a plot hole. If I say anymore I'll be going into the spoiler (probably gave a bit to much away already). Suffice to say it was an unnecessary addition that weakened the plot as a whole and shows a certain lack of direction from the author, he's clearly not sure where this story is going and is just throwing random ish at the MC to have a bit of plot. Still going to give this a 4/5 but it's more of a 3-ish/5. Probably won't get the next book.

Not gonna write a long review for this one, saw another that pretty much said what I feel about it. I will say this is my least favorite book in this series so far. It's a decent slice-of-life book, which I consider it to be, but the other elements of this plot (i.e. the pseudo mystery sub-plot) where trash. I'm not going to go into why, as I stated above another reviewer already went over that. I still enjoy the world of this series and the MC isn't bad when he's not being handicapped by the plot, so I'll likely get the next book. But this one is only a 3.5 for me, and that's with me being EXTREMELY generous. Wishing the author growth in his writing endeavors.

First lets talk about the narration, I can't say I enjoyed it much. There were far to many mispronunciations and just straight up in correct words used throughout this book. But ultimately I'm not sure if it's the narrator's fault or the author as such I'm gone give the narrator a tentative 4-ish star rating. I'll have to hear him narrate a better written book to really gauge his ability.

Now on to the story. Okay before I go in on this book let provide a little context. I've been reading cultivation web novels for close to a decade now (shout-out to wuxiaworld.com and a few others). I point this out mostly because my review comes for the perspective of someone whose read quite a few novels in this particular genre and is probably not valid for those who are experiencing it for the first time. So have that in mind. Lets start off with the basic grammar of it of it all since this, I feel, is the least biased of my issues with this book. I don't know why but a lot of these western written wuxia/xianxia books have trash editing. We go from poor sentence structure to the wrong word usage (e.g. impeccable when they meant implacable). While I am forgiving of newer authors whose writing skills are still growing, If you are going to sale a book and not share for free on a site like RoyalRoad, get a professional editor to look over it please. I can truly elevate your book.

Okay to my main issue with this (and honestly the majority of similar cultivation novels I've come across). I'm gonna be concise here, a lack of originality, that's the biggest issues I have with this book. It feels like a collection of cliches and tropes lumped in with a slightly different setting, but missing something that I can't quite describe that makes it unique. It feels like the author tried to follow a punch list of xianxia plot point's without giving it his own twist which makes me bored and feel like I've read this book a dozen times already. I don't know where this author is from or his cultural background, but he should've tried to build a story around that then integrate a cultivation world into it (a few tropes are okay, but treat it like salt in a dish, put it in sparingly). Think more Beware of Chicken less Dual Sword God (the latter of which is trash in my opinion). This story isn't awful, it just feels...soulless to me. In the end this book is a bland rehash of better stories I read years ago. I wish the author the best of luck and much growth in his endeavors. I hope in a few years time I stumble across a book of his and am amazed by his growth. This however aint it.

By far one of the most consistant book series I've ever read/listened too. I can't think of one book in this series that I didn't enjoy. 5 out of 5 for the series as a whole.

Not quite sure if this is the last book in this series, one part of me hopes its not but a larger part hopes it is. Either way this was a very well thought out and satisfing ending, which is rare in any book series and even more so for web series. This author has earned my respect, which might not be much for him but is the greatest thing I can give.
