Kirsten Raymonde will never forget the night Arthur Leander, the famous Hollywood actor, had a heart attack on stage during a production of King Lear. That was the night when a devastating flu pandemic arrived in the city, and within weeks, civilization as we know it came to an end.

Not my jam
Revisado: 05-18-23
Sorry I just didn’t really like it. The narrator didn’t change her voice at all for any of the characters which was confusing because sometimes she was speaking on behalf of a male character but in the same voice she used for general purpose and female characters. The storyline was pretty typical for an apocalypse and none of the characters were very compelling - if you’ve read Cormac McCarthy’s “The Road” or watched The Walking Dead you should be able to write a better post apocalypse story. Just my opinion- sorry if it’s harsh!

Historia
Ellen O’Farrell is a professional hypnotherapist who works out of the eccentric beachfront home she inherited from her grandparents. It’s a nice life, except for her tumultuous relationship history. She’s stoic about it, but at this point, Ellen wouldn’t mind a lasting one. When she meets Patrick, she’s optimistic. He’s attractive, single, employed, and best of all, he seems to like her back. Then comes that dreaded moment: He thinks they should have a talk. Braced for the worst, Ellen is pleasantly surprised.

Irritating female vs. female plot typical villain motive ugh
Revisado: 01-31-22
I wish there was more depth of character to the villain. The description of this book also seemed to suggest that the daughter in law was the villain but that’s not accurate. The whole brooding baby snatcher woman character is so tired. I would not recommend this one.

Historia
Caroline Evans is a single mom trying to raise her 15-year-old daughter, Issy, as best she can. Her ex-husband, James, was a philandering charmer, and a wealthy one at that. But Caroline couldn't put up with his cheating and left him, taking Issy with her. Now, they live in the countryside outside London, where Caroline has built a modestly successful catering business, and Issy is now at an all-girls boarding school. Things are beginning to feel normal. But then James mysteriously appears on her doorstep....

I very much enjoyed this audio book. It’s not going to be a top favorite book but it’s very pleasant. I felt the narrator was too easy on her ex-husband but in the end that didn’t really matter. Would recommend for anyone looking for a casual listen or beach read.

Historia
A perfect next listen for fans of Abbi Waxman and Katherine Center, Can't Take It Back is a fast-paced and relatable debut telling the interconnected stories of four women over the course of a kindergarten school year. Huddled on their favorite park bench in a quiet Seattle suburb, Holly, Avery, Zoe, and Sasha might look like they've got it all figured out - but there’s more to their stories than meets the eye.

I wish there was more!
Revisado: 04-27-21
This didn’t feel over - I want more! Can the author please write a sequel? Seems like there’s still so much character development to be had for all. I loved how quickly I felt a part of these character’s lives and community. It’s like a surrogate life since I’m stuck in COVID social distancing and can’t get this kind of social interaction outside of books! 😂 Would recommend!

Bad narration/ good story
Revisado: 04-23-21
I enjoyed the story, reminded me of Practical Magic sort of with the one red headed sister and the other dark haired. The narration was monotone. I thought the author could have taken this in a lot of different directions and I was a bit underwhelmed by the conclusion but overall I enjoyed it for a free book.

Augustus Everett is an acclaimed author of literary fiction. January Andrews writes best-selling romance. When she pens a happily ever after, he kills off his entire cast. They’re polar opposites. In fact, the only thing they have in common is that for the next three months, they're living in neighboring beach houses, broke, and bogged down with writer's block.

Very enjoyable
Revisado: 04-14-21
Although the author says this is a book about writer’s block, make no mistake, this is a romance. In the same vein as The Notebook, but more self-effacing/aware, funny and probably less cheesy because of it. I thoroughly enjoyed listening to this book and I’m sure I’d enjoy reading it too. If you liked this you’ll probably like the second book in the Bread Alone series (The Baker’s Apprentice) by Judith Ryan Hendricks. Overall, I would recommend this book for a light entertaining listen or read.

Not a fan
Revisado: 04-12-21
There are lots of terrible messages about masculinity and femininity in this book. Lots of possessive language from the male character which objectifies the female character and contributes to intimate partner violence and possessiveness. Monica Murphy sounds like a burgeoning feminist who’s not aware of her use of problematic language. Monica - take the time to read some real feminist books before writing another one of these! Women like Bell Hooks, Kimberle Crenshaw, Audre Lorde. I know this is supposed to be a light fun romance novel but you could have achieved this by leaving the majority of your work as is and just removing the problem language like “claiming her” and “all mine” etc. Readers: if you’re aware that this is problematic it is a fine source of entertainment, similar quality to a reality tv show- just don’t expect anything more.

No unexpected twists and turns
Revisado: 04-08-21
I was hoping for more unexpected twists and turns or even more suspense but it never came. Mostly a story about classism and unbridled ambition / sociopathy. Loved the section in the south of France though, but mostly because I just wish I could be there so badly. If you’re looking for more suspense or who-done-it material look elsewhere. Not poorly written just marketed wrong, in my opinion.
