Okay, not outstanding
Revisado: 03-13-24
Murder Road is a disappointment after enjoying some of St. James’s other books. This one simply did not grab me. I was not invested in the characters, and I did not think that the story was that interesting. The only character I liked was Rose. The sisters were annoying, the main characters anodyne, their investigation pretty dull. The background of the story was neither touching nor frightening. I wanted something scary but got lukewarm storytelling and twists/reveals that were just blah. I found the narrator all right but simpering at times. Overall, I’d rate this somewhere in between “must read” and “must avoid.” Maybe worth a credit if you are a devoted St. James fan and can’t bear to miss a book of hers, but you are not missing much if you skip it, either.

Peter James always writes the worst villains. I loved Denial as an introduction to DC Glenn Branson and on its own. The narration was great too. Highly recommended.

Esme is a start-up success who runs her own successful media company and heads up a series of investigative podcasts. She also has a beautiful home, where she lives with her sister, Michelle, and her son, Zachary. Sure, there’s an ex-husband hanging around - Owen likes to pop round a bit too often - but everything is civilised and amicable. She has life all tied up. But Esme knows that any successful podcaster is only as good as her last story, so she sets out on a new series of interviews to get to the truth behind Simone Fischer’s high-profile murder of her husband.

The Evidence was great. I had to binge-listen to it because I could barely turn it off. The suspense and twists were fantastic and the characters were interesting, plus great writing and narration and you have a winner. Highly recommended.

Excellent Drama and Suspense!
Revisado: 12-06-19
High praise for what looks like a really promising new series from Robert Bryndza. Former infamous detective Kate Marshall is a college professor in a quiet oceanside town until she and her assistant are drawn into the tangled web of a copycat killer- a copycat of the Nine Elms Cannibal Killer who Kate caught fifteen years ago before leaving the police force
This novel is full of suspense, the characters are likeable, and it's really well-written. This is one of the best audiobooks I've listened to, and I was hooked from start to finish. It also has a unique premise, different from other 'police procedurals,' kind of a mix between procedural and psychological suspense. I was sorry to see it end. Highly recommended.

Plodding pace and too many players are ruinous
Revisado: 08-29-17
I have a few quarrels with The Dolls House. This is the second in the Dr. Kate Pearson series, but if I didn't know, i would swear this was written by a different author. I thought 'Red Ribbons' was excellent- it was suspenseful, entertaining , the right balance between characters ' personal interactions and the mystery, which kept me guessing. This one felt just the opposite. Reading this novel was simply not fun. Tedious, convoluted, the Plot unfolds too slowly on its own and is further hindered by too many subplots and minor players' POVs that tangle like so many threads shoved through the eye of a needle.
The title of The Doll's House is inspired by the place where Clodagh Hamilton goes during her long, painful (for the listener) hypnosis sessions. After her mother Lavinia's death, Clodagh feels that the strains within their relationship - addressed AFTER her mother's death- lie somewhere within her repressed past, and she is determined to find out what happened. We spend many chapters painfully slogging through the details of the hypnosis sessions with Clodagh. These parts alone are enough to relieve my review from at least one star. The hypnosis sessions are written in a question/answer form of dialogue that is overall very tedious to listen to. I think this type of format would be better on paper. Granted, there are a few important climactic moments where the style helps build tension well. Overall, it became incredibly tedious.
Meanwhile, local men are showing up dead, beaten and drowned. Detective O'Connor recruits Dr. Kate Pearson's profiling assistance to track down the killer. The side plots include Dr. Kate Pearson's private practice client with repressed memories similar to Clodagh's case; a series of rapes that may or may not be connected and/or relevant to the murder inquiry; and the personal and professional challenges of O'Connor and Kate.
There are far too many characters in the book making it impossible to sort out who is who in the short, choppy chapters, each from a different point of view, sometimes from a completely random character. There is not room for the characters to drive the plot forward. The case itself is stagnant for about two weeks while O'Connor sinks around and Kate's profiles are mindless. By the time the suspense should have been killing me, it was actually ennui that put me to sleep. Finally, the narration didn't add much. I found the reader's cadences to be monotone and her accent was barely there- I love a good Irish accent when I am listening to an Irish novel.
I wanted much more from this novel than it gave. I hope the author's next in the series garners a much better recommendation from this reader.

Truth or Dare! Who knows your secrets?
Revisado: 02-04-17
Suspenseful, Funny, and Entertaining! I really enjoyed "You Sent Me a Letter." This book is surprisingly funny, with some great laugh-out-loud moments. The story took place over a 24-hour period, with frequent look-backs by the main character. Readers will find themselves hooked on the exploits of Sophie while she navigates the huge party surrounding her 40th birthday, what is supposed to be a secret wedding, and a guy she's not altogether sure about- not to mention having received a mystery letter warning her to show up for her big night or else! Sophie thereafter plays a sort of bumper-cars between her family, her best friend, her illicit lover, and her fiance's intensely stressful first wife. I can only describe Sophie's big day, in her experience, as super stressful. I was dying to find out who the letter writer was, and this kept me guessing until the very end, as things were very much not as they seemed.
Julie Maisey did a great job as narrator.
This book bucked the psychological-suspense trend in a pleasing way, and I recommend it as a great way to use your credit!

I really enjoyed this book. I thought the author did a great job letting the story unfold at a good pace that builds tension, and the main character was well-drawn. I liked the author's portrayal of her memory loss, it was realistic and interesting. There were some genuinely scary moments- i don't mind saying that i wouldn't listen with the lights off! Awesome twisty ending that I didn't see coming. Highly recommend- great narration too!

Stuck on an iceberg...
Revisado: 01-09-17
...but the book threw me a life raft about 3/4 of the way through, so somewhat time well spent. The book earned three stars because it ultimately turned out to be a pretty good mystery. However, the story plodded along for quite a while.
There are three main characters: Peter the detective, Hannah the "profiler" and Emma, the scorned lover. I thought the detective was a jerk, full stop. The profiler- well, she doesn't have much of a role in the criminal investigation at all, but her sad personal life is a focus. Emma's character grew on me as we learned more (in excruciating detail) about her background. The police detectives left me wondering where their heads were the whole time, as some basic investigative techniques were left out. Hannah was the only smart one, and the author would have been well advised to un-stereotype her and make her an effective character. The only character I really enjoyed was Olga, Emma's coworker in a retail clothing store. She had some backbone. The other female characters really weren't written well.
Here are some quotes so you can get a feeling for the writing:
"You should be suspicious of strange men who come knocking on your door in the middle of the night, and even more suspicious if they're not strangers."
"You could kill yourself, or you could have a beer."
"Love and beauty are transient; the shit is eternal."
There are many "striking revelations" and "deep thoughts" like this in the meandering minds of the main characters, and believe me you will hear them all if you make it through this book.
Not too highly recommended, but also not a complete waste of a credit.
