Long life, brilliant mind,
Revisado: 04-14-25
Feynman was much more than a brilliant physicist. Able to navigate politically treacherous waters,. Perhaps the (paraphrased) statement: what was it that physically failed, and why did humans make such apparently bad decisions?.

Historia
In a startling departure, James Lee Burke has written an epic story of love, hate and survival set against the tumultuous background of the Civil War and Reconstruction. At the center of the tale are James lee Burke's own ancestors, Robert Perry, who comes from the slave-owning family of wealth and privilege, and Willy Burke, born of Irish immigrants, a poor boy who is as irreverent as he is brave and decent. Despite personal and political conflicts, both men join the Confederate Army, determined not to back down.

A superb novel. It’s no wonder that J L Burke is renowned master storyteller .
Revisado: 02-25-25
Historical novel from the Civil War as told from the perspective of southern society, high and low. The struggles of the dispossessed and the wealthy. Conflicted allegiances of tragic and heroic characters struggling against their passions and social circumstances. Their stories woven together and presented as though it was just yesterday, and that we are living in the recent aftermath of that war.

In The Normans, Lars Brownworth follows their story, from the first shock of a Viking raid on an Irish monastery to the exile of the last Norman Prince of Antioch. In the process, he brings to vivid life the Norman tapestry's rich cast of characters: figures like Rollo the Walker, William Iron-Arm, Tancred the Monkey King, and Robert Guiscard. The Normans presents a fascinating glimpse of a time when a group of restless adventurers had the world at their fingertips.

Breadth of Norman influence in Mediterranean as well as Britain
Revisado: 02-12-25
Like many of us of N. European descent i was aware of the significance of William the conqueror, yet this book brought me awareness of the role of the Normans in Sicily and Italy. It also made me aware of the complexity of Viking history.. A missing component is a PDF of the family tree(s) to help keep all the names straight.

“Terror can rule absolutely only over men who are isolated against each other.… Therefore, one of the primary concerns of all tyrannical government is to bring this isolation about.” — Hannah Arendt, The Origins of Totalitarianism “Americans have long sensed a new kind tyranny creeping into our lives. This disquiet has hovered in the background for a long time, though most of us couldn’t put our finger on it. Trends to control speech and behavior are isolating us from one another, and they have begun to intensify rapidly and spread throughout society’s institutions.” — ...

Wow! One of the worst podcasts ever
Revisado: 12-17-23
I was looking for some insight into the book with the title weaponization of loneliness.
I didn’t find it here. The podcast was a noisy rant on corrupt liberal institutions, such as universities and how liberal people are deluded and so on. It was at best an exercise in concealing intent. I’ll look elsewhere.

Historia
Heartwood is a kind of tree that grows in layers. And as Billy Bob's grandfather once told him, you do well in life by keeping the roots in a clear stream and not letting anyone taint the water for you. But in Holland's dusty little hometown of Deaf Smith, in the hill country north of Austin, local kingpin Earl Deitrich has made a fortune running roughshod and tainting anyone who stands in his way. Billy Bob has problems with Deitrich and his shamelessly callous demeanor, but can't shake the legacy of his passion for Deitrich's "heartbreak-beautiful" wife, Peggy Jean.

So many words, more words than necessary to describe a complex web of stories. well written, but perhaps over written. Normally a fan of James Lee Burke, and I remain a fan. But, this one not so much..

Historia
The United States, the richest country on earth, has more poverty than any other advanced democracy. Why? Why does this land of plenty allow one in every eight of its children to go without basic necessities, permit scores of its citizens to live and die on the streets, and authorize its corporations to pay poverty wages?

Political violence rips apart several towns in southwest Texas. A far-right militia plots to kidnap the governor of Michigan and try her for treason. An armed mob of Trump supporters and conspiracy theorists storms the U.S. Capitol. Are these isolated incidents? Or is this the start of something bigger? Barbara F. Walter has spent her career studying civil conflict in places like Iraq, Ukraine, and Sri Lanka, but now she has become increasingly worried about her own country.

Clarity
Revisado: 02-14-22
Before I began, I had several questions. One of which was not answered but a number of them provided clarity about stability and longevity of governments, the vulnerability of types of government, the roles of factions. Not directly answered was why certain citizens are unduly susceptible to misinformation. Ethnic identity as a faction apparently outweighs wealth disparity. I understand why certain reviewers would give low marks to the book; it casts a light on the strategies of rising factions in the USA. It may be embarrassing to them.

Star-crossed lovers caught in an immortal bind; one can’t leave a trace, the other can , both in a three-way with the devil . I imagine this is a story akin to the typical romantic pulp fiction novel.

Historia
Utopia Avenue is the strangest British band you’ve never heard of. Emerging from London’s psychedelic scene in 1967, Utopia Avenue released only two LPs during its brief, blazing journey from the clubs of Soho and drafty ballrooms to Top of the Pops and the cusp of chart success, and on to glory in Amsterdam, prison in Rome, and a fateful American fortnight in the autumn of 1968. David Mitchell’s captivating new novel tells the unexpurgated story of Utopia Avenue. Can we change the world in turbulent times, or does the world change us?

Satisfies, eventually
Revisado: 08-27-21
Some reviews take issue with the narration, and I can’t fault them for that at least in the beginning. But, the story as well as narration resolve and the story, in time rewards the listener. An aside: as a personal bonus I periodically listened to the artists and songs mentioned in the saga.

Biographical, not scientific
Revisado: 08-03-21
Expecting a discussion of genetics and biochemical aspects of addiction, I was instead immersed in a biographical confession of personal loss. It was well written and well performed, but not what I anticipated.
