Historia
On July 4, 2022, a shooter climbed onto a rooftop in Highland Park, Illinois, and opened fire on a Fourth of July parade below, killing seven people and wounding dozens more. Prosecutors charged Robert “Bobby” Crimo III with the mass shooting. But this attack was part of something even more insidious. Bobby had created an elaborate game—complete with cryptic videos, a book of numbers, and an eerie online presence—designed to seed a conspiracy theory about the massacre.

what is reality?
Revisado: 04-07-25
I started this without reading the description or anything about it, assuming it was another of those fully produced audio thrillers I've been devouring. imagine my surprise as i gradually realized over the course of the first few minutes that it is an investigative report of real events! then, imagine my surprise again coming to the reviews to find about half of them reviewing this as a work of fiction and even calling the "characters" unrealistic! Sadly, I feel like this all somehow reinforces the views of the mass shooter! we have as a whole become so removed from reality we cannot tell what is the shadow and what the puppet! I feel like a report on listener response to this report would be almost more interesting than the original material! especially as you start coming to the reviews that discuss the "biased" reporting on conspiracy theories. how deep are you, dear listeners? are you asking for "both sides" on q anon? we have slipped so far from "reality," can you even see the shore anymore?!

Has some issues
Revisado: 02-21-25
i usually like the genre, but i found this hard to get into. some of the sound mixing and quality is rough and the pacing just didn't catch me. it was hard to process some of the dialog due to the sound mixing, that may have been a big part of my issue. had to drop it partway through.

Historia
FBI Agent Nell Flynn hasn't been home in 10 years. Nell and her father, Homicide Detective Martin Flynn, have never had much of a relationship. When Martin Flynn dies in a motorcycle accident, Nell returns to the house she grew up in so that she can spread her father's ashes and close his estate. At the behest of her father's partner, Detective Lee Davis, Nell becomes involved in an investigation into the murders of two young women in Suffolk County. The further Nell digs, the more likely it seems to her that her father should be the prime suspect.

VERY meh
Revisado: 02-21-25
The performance is not awful if a little dry and the characters have an interesting premise. but in the end, all the emotional beats ring hollow and the final twist is exceedingly obvious from the first second the character involved is introduced - excruciatingly obvious and yet also somehow a little inconsistent for the plot lmao. I would definitely not recommend this title, although it is not awful.

Excellent!
Revisado: 02-14-25
At first, the main character is a little hard to warm up to. her initial reaction to events drags a little bit...if your son commits murder wouldn't the first thought be "he must have had a good reason!" ? it takes dear jenn about 3 chapters to work through enough of her own baggage and anxiety about motherhood to get to this obvious question... so much of the early novel is dedicated to Jenn just talking shit about herself, it's a rocky start. but the plot & surrounding characters quickly pick up the slack and eventually our mc stops questioning every single little thing about herself & grows for the better. very worth the listen

And there are those who have vowed to destroy it. In the Valley of the Time Tombs, where huge, brooding structures move backward through time, the Shrike waits for them all.

required reading for 2025
Revisado: 02-12-25
i have a love for older sci-fi, for comparing the vision of the future with reality & the amusing way, despite all the technological projections and great sensitivity to humanity these great authors wield, they totally miss the progress of social mores. it's always fun to see the little things that characters think or reference that are really just a tell on the generation of the author...
in terms of classic scifi, this is a great one hands down. but what really makes this stand out is the theme, the resounding thread of humanity. especially the end of the last chapter. if you find yourself struggling to make it through, you owe it to yourself in this year of 2025 to listen to the story of siri, and think seriously on the kind of world we should want to be making. and who we are willing to sacrifice to make it.

this continues to be one of the best things on audible
Revisado: 10-03-24
I love how all the threads are coming together. the team behind this has managed to keep it thrilling and engaging through all three seasons without any lull and I am just as invested now as I was from the very beginning. I love the twists and turns the story takes and the way it sits just on that boundary of completely ridiculous. it's a story with a ton of flair, and the production is, as always, absolutely excellent. this is by far the best out of the delightful genre of resurrected radio dramas produced by audible.

Shouldn't the book be called Sephryn?
Revisado: 08-05-24
this is my first Sullivan and im not really sure how i feel. the structure /framing of the narrative feels off to me. i never really felt like we got to know Nolyn or that he did anything that spectacular to make him worthy of having the book named after him. on the other hand, having a two month old son of my own, my anxiety was through the roof listening to sephryns story. she was a complex and relatable character, and seemed way more key to the actual events of the tale than Nolyn, who was off playing war for most of it. the suspenseful, almost crime mystery side of the book was much stronger in my opinion than the classic fantasy elements. and since I am jumping into the world here at the third trilogy, the unseen hand felt a bit forced - "oh I see he's doing a Witt thing" (though I have honestly no idea who did it first). I think the audible description does a disservice to call this a stand alone and I likely would have enjoyed it a bit more with more background, as there is A LOT of callbacks to past characters and events. but I think the largest part of my dissatisfaction with the book is likely mostly related to my personal fatigue with good boy heros with shiny swords. Sephryn, a mother and a politician who is largely ignorant of the world outside her city and issues beyond her personal campaign, was a refreshing and fascinating perspective and for me personally, the story could have benefited from doubling down on her side of things and presenting a unique take on the genre.

my favorite James patterson I've tried so far
Revisado: 07-23-24
not a big patterson fan as his work often feels contrived and silly, but I rather liked this one. I hope patty gets her own spin off series, she is pretty enjoyable as a character (reminds me a bit of Sydney rye). the tech stuff was fun, it was just accurate enough but also just outlandish enough that I found implausibilities entertaining rather than annoying. random guest appearance from Patton Oswald was the best part by far lol

It's fun but what's with the inconsistencies??
Revisado: 05-01-24
it's a fun story and I like that there's multiple cases - feels like an episodic tv show. but what is with the plot inconsistency between "episodes"? with the throughline story (the case for the man that owns the hotel) characters will have a conversation or be present for an event...then suddenly not know anything about it in the next chapter. there's also sound recording inconsistencies, where the volume will go from quiet to very very loud and then back again at random points in the middle of a conversation. the characters themselves don't feel very consistent either, though the voice actors do a reasonably good job - except for accents on side characters...also inconsistent lol. not a very good story overall, but maybe about the level to expect from a churn it out pulp fiction writer like James patterson?
