Historia
More people have died exploring underwater caves than climbing Mount Everest, and we know more about deep space than we do about the depths of our oceans. From one of the top cave divers working today - and one of the very few women in her field - Into the Planet blends science, adventure, and memoir to bring listeners face-to-face with the terror and beauty of Earth’s remaining unknowns and the extremes of human capability.

Revisado: 12-01-24
Jill gave such a passionate and strong performance. A truly professional voiceover from the author herself. It was a treat to listen to someone else risk their neck documenting the unexplored. I look forward to following Jill online as she raises awareness about our water supply.

Historia
From growing up in Los Angeles with movie star neighbors, bearing witness to the music scene in the 1960s and seeing the rise of comedy in the early 70s, to studying mime in Paris under the tutelage of Marcel Marceau to becoming a founding member of the seminal comedy troupe The Groundlings, it's no wonder that Lorne Michaels offered Laraine Newman a spot in the original cast of Saturday Night Live. There, Laraine was part of the show that changed TV - and comedy - forever.

Regret is harder than grief
Revisado: 02-11-22
Laraine breaks into other accents and dialects often (which was the basis of a sketch on SNL with Molly Shannon) and it would be annoying if she wasn't so good at it. Laraine was an insecure imposter until she finally found the work that brought her dignity. An unlikely mom until it happened late in life. Despite all the drugs, she's got a memory that is rock solid and is a great source of stories about her more successful co-stars that we might never get an intimate view of. For every bright star we see, there are many more that don't shine as bright. The stories might be just as good or better though. Laraine was a weaker presence but may have been the little piece that helped hold it all together. During the 40th anniversary show, I was delighted to see Laraine used in the Californians sketch. That evening had all the magic that you'd hope a reunion would be. It would be amazing to watch movies or television with a Laraine Newman commentary track. She's got great insight for a kid from the wrong side of the tracks.

Roger's in my personal "Hall" but not Canton, Ohio
Revisado: 09-10-21
I only knew of the Roger from his final 3-4 years with San Francisco. An offense from my point of view where the pass set up the run. Roger may never get invited to Canton but I felt he was a more exciting player to watch than Emmitt Smith and others on the stat leaderboards. Roger had a passion and I loved his overachieving attitude. There were some good 49ers stories here for sure. It might seem unfair to say that Roger had less to overcome than Steve Young. Young's book was much more layered and interesting.
A minor criticism: Though the narrator who did Steve Young's book was a different reader, it seemed that names like Debartolo (and others) kept getting mispronounced in both books.

Historia
A. E. Hotchner first met Paul Newman in 1955 when the virtually unknown actor assumed the lead role in Hotchner’s first television play, based on an Ernest Hemingway story. The project elevated both men from relative obscurity to recognition and began a close and trusted friendship that lasted until Newman’s death in 2008.

If only we all had a friend like A.E. Hotchner
Revisado: 09-10-21
I'd been wondering if I'd ever get to hear a bunch of "Paul" stories from an unbiased source. I feared that had such a book been written by someone close to Paul (like Joanne), it wouldn't have offered the detailed insight from observations. Paul had the perfect best friend to document some of his best moments. I felt like what I'd missed hearing about Paul was finally captured. I've not seen all his movies but I always was a fan of the person Paul seemed to be.

Historia
Author Paul Sahre shares deeply revealing stories that serve as the unlikely inspiration behind his extraordinary 30-year design career. Sahre explores his mostly vain attempts to escape his "suburban Addams Family" upbringing and the death of his elephant-trainer brother. He also wrestles with the cosmic implications involved in operating a scanner, explains the disappearance of ice machines, analyzes a disastrous meeting with Steely Dan, and laments the typos, sunsets, and poor color choices that have shaped his work and point of view.

A rust belt Art School Confidential
Revisado: 06-30-21
I love art school stories with a confidential edge. Slightly older than me, Paul went to Kent and I went to nearby Akron. I would spend decades at the same Cleveland based company in a creative department. I worked with many graphic designers over the years who came and went. The majority of them graduated from Kent’s program. I encouraged them to tell stories about the program and their experiences. Akron had some professors that crossed over and back. Two themes always came up: The word “craft” and the work ethic that everything had to be airtight. There’s a good amount of stories about scraping by on a budget, maintaining a beater car, and cheap rent. I don’t know that a person who isn’t a fan of the graphic design process would enjoy it as much as I did.
