Lots of real background information to make the story just believable enough —if you wanted to imagine it was real.

Historia
On January 28, 1742, a ramshackle vessel of patched-together wood and cloth washed up on the coast of Brazil. Inside were thirty emaciated men, barely alive, and they had an extraordinary tale to tell. They were survivors of His Majesty’s Ship the Wager, a British vessel that had left England in 1740 on a secret mission during an imperial war with Spain. While the Wager had been chasing a Spanish treasure-filled galleon known as “the prize of all the oceans,” it had wrecked on a desolate island off the coast of Patagonia.

Good but very similar to other stories
Revisado: 10-27-23
Good story but it seems like the Commodore Ansen portion would have been the more interesting book. There was a lot of general sailing background in this book that is weaved in. And while I’ve never criticized a narrator before, the whole book is read with a unnecessary drama that wore on me.

Historia
Andrew Roberts' Napoleon is the first one-volume biography to take advantage of the recent publication of Napoleon's thirty-three thousand letters, which radically transform our understanding of his character and motivation. At last we see him as he was: protean multitasker, decisive, surprisingly willing to forgive his enemies and his errant wife Josephine.

Thoroughly enjoyable —if your into this subject
Revisado: 09-20-23
Agree with many of the reviews. This book is detailed and a little hard to keep up with the names of people and places, as I don’t speak French. Wikipedia helped with the people but I should have kept better notes especially for the end, to follow what happened to everyone (spoiler alert, their all dead now:). Enjoy.

Historia
Most Americans dismiss George III as a buffoon - a heartless and terrible monarch with few, if any, redeeming qualities. The best-known modern interpretation of him is Jonathan Groff's preening, spitting, and pompous take in Hamilton, Lin-Manuel Miranda's Broadway masterpiece. But this deeply unflattering characterization is rooted in the prejudiced and brilliantly persuasive opinions of 18th-century revolutionaries. After combing through hundreds of thousands of pages of never-before-published correspondence, award-winning historian Andrew Roberts has uncovered the truth.

I really enjoyed the book. Lots of details and insights into the times and king. I also enjoyed the lens of the revolutionary war from their point of view.

Historia
"Welcome to Rockwell Land," writes Deborah Solomon in the introduction to this spirited and authoritative biography of the painter who provided 20th-century America with a defining image of itself. As the star illustrator of The Saturday Evening Post for nearly half a century, Norman Rockwell mingled fact and fiction in paintings that reflected the we-the-people, communitarian ideals of American democracy. But who was this man who served as our unofficial "artist in chief" and bolstered our country's national identity?

Skewed biography to support her view
Revisado: 03-08-23
It was a thorough journey of Rockwell’s life and the author was clearly driving her perspective and seeing what she wanted to see. She clearly wanted to stir up a controversy and generate interest in her book. There is line between presenting facts and and positioning facts to support an agenda which she crossed.

Historia
As the dominant species on Earth, humans have made astonishing progress since our ancestors came down from the trees. But how did the descendants of small primates manage to walk upright, become top predators, and populate the world? How were humans able to develop civilizations and produce a globalized economy? Now, in The Age of Wood, Roland Ennos shows for the first time that the key to our success has been our relationship with wood.

Too much of everything
Revisado: 03-01-23
Maybe it’s my fault for misunderstanding the book’s description … but I was expecting something different. I get it, wood is important and it’s been involved in every part of human history. But I liked the chapters best when trees are the focus vs their role in the steam engine, making metals, digging coal, etc.

Interesting way to learn about reading
Revisado: 01-11-23
This is a broad history of the development of reading for what I assume expect would be a person interested in the academic side of reading. Vs someone looking for a specific relationship to a reading problem in their loved one. It was very interesting but to be clear there are no answers or suggestions.

Historia
The enthralling and often harrowing history of the adventurers who searched for the Northwest Passage, the holy grail of 19th-century British exploration. After the triumphant end of the Napoleonic Wars in 1815, the British took it upon themselves to complete something they had been trying to do since the 16th century: Find the fabled Northwest Passage, a shortcut to the Orient via a sea route over Northern Canada. For the next 35 years the British Admiralty sent out expedition after expedition to probe the ice-bound waters of the Canadian Arctic in search of a route.

For the past two millennia, the ability to produce it in ever more efficient ways has supported the proliferation of literacy, media, religion, education, commerce, and art; it has formed the foundation of civilizations, promoting revolutions and restoring stability.

If you want dates and excerpts from journals and such it was interesting, really that part was great. But there is definitely a skewed perspective when the author is framing it mostly as explorers & savages.
