Historia
From the summer of 1870 to the spring of 1871, famously dubbed the "Terrible Year" by Victor Hugo, Paris and its people were besieged, starved, and forced into surrender by Germans-then imperiled again as radical republicans established a breakaway Commune, ultimately crushed by the French Army after bloody street battles and the burning of central Paris.

Engaging but overwhelming…
Revisado: 01-20-25
This book is very thorough; perhaps too thorough. The author obviously loves his subject and just can’t stop himself. Art, artisits’ personalities, their social circles, politics, history, and military successes and failures all come together in detail. But in covering all of these areas, it overwhelms. There is a lot of great information here, but to maximize it will require more than 1 read or 1 listen.

Historia
Alexei Navalny began writing Patriot shortly after his near-fatal poisoning in 2020. It is the full story of his life: his youth, his call to activism, his marriage and family, his commitment to challenging a world super-power determined to silence him, and his total conviction that change cannot be resisted—and will come. Patriot is Navalny’s final letter to the world: a moving account of his last years spent in the most brutal prison on earth; a reminder of why the principles of individual freedom matter so deeply; and a rousing call to continue the work for which he sacrificed his life.

Integrity defined
Revisado: 01-09-25
How does one make light of a situation knowing it will end in death one way or another? Getting to know Navalny, his life, what was important to him, and why he gave up everything for what he believed in was inspiring. While over the years the news made us aware of Navalny and his crusade, to hear it from his perspective was enlightening. He makes you understand his cause and why he sacrificed everything for it. Nobel.

Historia
Dorothea Brooke is an ardent idealist who represses her vivacity and intelligence for the cold, theological pedant Casaubon. One man understands her true nature: the artist Will Ladislaw. But how can love triumph against her sense of duty and Casaubon’s mean spirit? Meanwhile, in the little world of Middlemarch, the broader world is mirrored: the world of politics, social change, and reforms, as well as betrayal, greed, blackmail, ambition, and disappointment.

Finally, Middlemarch
Revisado: 02-18-21
It is not often one has the time or disposition for a book of this weight. But given the circumstances of this year, the time to indulge in these beautifully written (an understatement) words was available. While worth the wait, I wish I had made the time sooner. Also, the talented reader makes it even more enjoyable. Make this a “must” for your audible pleasure.
