Historia
Sam Hill always saw the world through different eyes. Born with red pupils, he was called “Devil Boy” or Sam “Hell” by his classmates; “God’s will” is what his mother called his ocular albinism. Her words were of little comfort, but Sam persevered. Sam believed it was God who sent Ernie Cantwell, the only African American kid in his class, to be the friend he so desperately needed. And that it was God’s idea for Mickie Kennedy to storm into Our Lady of Mercy like a tornado, uprooting every rule Sam had been taught about boys and girls. Forty years later, Sam, a small-town eye doctor, is no longer certain anything was by design.

Promising, then disappointing
Revisado: 02-23-24
I tried not to read any of the reviews or the hype surrounding this novel, and I think that's probably why I kept with it as long as I did.
The story starts out simply, modestly, with a feeling that something big is going to happen on the horizon. But at least for the first half of the novel, nothing really ever does, at least nothing anyone who has ever been through a semi-tumultuous childhood would not have gone through as well.
But in this nervously anticipatory way, Dugoni's writing does a marvelous job building anticipation while telling what seems like an honest coming of age story. If there's one thing I'll give him, he is an above average storyteller. His sentences are clear and concise, with a simplicity that so subtly obstructs larger concepts that are just dying to bleed through. His writing is sweet and airy and satisfying in its own way.
but about 100 pages in, I realized that I had been holding my breath waiting for any of the three main characters, or any member of their family, for that matter, to do anything less than the most virtuous thing. And none of them did any such thing. I discovered that these were sugar sweet characters you wanted to root for, until you realize that they are completely one dimensional cardboard cutouts masturbating as complex people. They are dripping with virtue, they make unbelievable sacrifices for each other to maintain dignity, most times while sacrificing their own. blah blah blah.
it was at this point but I realized I was being duped and I wondered what Dugoni's motive was, although looking back it should have come as no surprise, particularly from the moment Sam's mother and rolls him in a Catholic school afraid of his ocular albinism, which is obviously assigned that the devil is within him. So yeah, now you know what I mean by heavy-handed. this stated coming of age story is basically a novel-sized advertisement for Catholicism. Sam has a crisis of faith throughout the entire novel, and boy oh boy does he encounter some completely unbelievable plot twists design specifically to test his faith. unraveled shoe strings of ridiculous plot lines tie together neatly to convince us that believing in God, the rosary, and the squeaky clean teachings of righteous parents will elevate us in our personal, social and ecumenical lives.
I am not going to say that this novel is a complete waste. it was fun and satisfying in its way. the bad people really got what they deserved, and almost all of the good people also got what they deserved. in this way I did enjoy some of it. But man, I did feel duped. I am not a religious man, and I'm partly not a religious man because of crap like this.
this is kind of a shame, because dugoni's voice is marvelous for telling a coming of age story. his voice is delicate, nuanced, and he knows how to hang on certain words, blurt others, and gently let you down, and just as gently built you back up. it has a sweet innocence to it that isn't overly saccharine. he actually has a good deal of talent in the narration department.
Too bad he wasn't narrating something better.

Historia
Herc Beal knows who he's named after—a mythical hero—but he's no superhero. He's the smallest kid in his class. So when his homeroom teacher at his new middle school gives him the assignment of duplicating the mythical Hercules's amazing feats in real life, he's skeptical. After all, there are no Nemean Lions on Cape Cod—and not a single Hydra in sight.

Schmidt does it again...
Revisado: 08-03-23
I am a long-time Gary D. Schmidt fan. but I go years between reading his novels, and every time I read a new one, I am always reminded once again why he is probably the most underrated young adult novelist whoever lived. Indeed, he is one of the best. This novel carries so many of his trademarks that it's impossible not to fall in love with him all over again. The eccentricity, depth and loveliness of the characters, the lovingly nuanced New England setting, the frenetic intensity of the polarities of laugh-out-loud hilarity and gut-wrenching pain and sorrow: it's all here, and honestly, it's right up there with the Wednesday Wars, an accomplishment I never thought he could achieve. And the narrator, just wow. I've never heard of this guy, but holy cow, I would have hand-picked him to lovingly portray any of Schmidt's novels. His voice has a gentleness and love behind it that gives the story even more layering. His soft and gentle tone when describing something hard, mixed with his jovial, mischievous tone when a prank is being pulled really pull you in and force you to drop whatever you are doing and just listen. All in all, this is my favorite audible production, and I've listened to over 300 titles. This is truly, gently art.

No words...

I sit in tears as I type this. Read this book now. You will never forget it, and its characters will haunt you always. A very important work urging us to remember our own humanity through the vehicle of a tragically obscure catastrophe, nearly forgotten in the annals of history.

exceptional
Revisado: 11-16-16
Poignant, lovely, hilarious, touching and brutally honest in turns. The way Schmidt handles an extraordinarily diverse set of universal themes with such great care and a gentle but firm voice is nothing short of astounding. This story is quite funny as well. The narrative flies seamlessly through the turbulent time of 1960s America, as seen through the eyes of a seemingly dough-eyed, mischievous seventh grade romantic (though he would never see himself as such.) His friends help guide him to realizations about himself and who he is in a world facing such immense challenges. From his neurotic Jewish best friend on the cusp of realizing his own manhood as he prepares for his Bar Mitzvah, to a young Vietnamese refugee struggling to stay afloat in a society that rejects her, to the love interest who sees the man in the narrator before he does, to the strict, sometimes relentless teacher with tremendous secrets and motivations of her own, these characters and several more are so lovingly crafted, so painstakingly well thought out, that you can't help but tear up when you reach the book's sentimental but very real conclusion. Thus novel is pure gold, nostalgia as it should be written, unafraid of its own weight, and unapologetic for its honesty. Listen to it or read it now. You will fall in love.

Historia
Lydia McCloud meets Arthur Danse at a wedding party in Plymouth, N.H., and she thinks he's a man she could grow to love. Arthur sees things differently. In Lydia, he sees the sort of woman people always want to protect. He decides he's going to show her she wouldn't always be protected. Once their only child, Robert, is born, Arthur's behavior worsens. When the courts become involved, the nightmare really begins. This scathing novel is an indictment of a justice system that makes a mockery of its very name.

Terrifying but true

This graphic tale of the justice system gone wrong will keep you up at night, in a cold sweat. Believable character, a locomotive plot and just plain, raw, intense grit will keep you listening, and will haunt your dreams.
