Historia
Born into the Waorani tribe of Ecuador’s Amazon rainforest, Nemonte Nenquimo had a singular upbringing. She was taught about plant medicines, foraging, oral storytelling, and shamanism by her elders. She played barefoot in the forest until she was a teenager and left to study with an evangelical missionary group in the city. But after Nemonte’s ancestors began appearing in her dreams, pleading with her to return and embrace her own culture, she listened. Nemonte returned to the forest and traditional ways of life and became one of the most forceful voices in climate change activism.

I loved this book. Decades ago I had seen a movie and documentary about the missionaries who went to a “primitive” area and were speared to death. And later how the sister of one of them forgave the indigenous community who had killed her brother and had gone to live with them to share the love of God and help them. It was all from the white people’s perspective. So how amazing to hear the other side of the story by one of the indigenous people of that community. She went through some horrifying experiences all done in the name of the Christian religion. It was a great reminder of the bias of those who had made the documentaries years ago. And how abusive their “help” and “love” so often is. I am grateful for this book.

Historia
Frederick Fife was born with an extra helping of kindness in his heart. If he borrowed your car, he’d return it washed with a full tank of gas. The problem is there’s nobody left in Fred’s life to borrow from. At eighty-two, he’s desperately lonely, broke, and on the brink of homelessness. But Fred’s luck changes when, in a bizarre case of mistaken identity, he takes the place of grumpy Bernard Greer at the local nursing home. Now he has warm meals in his belly and a roof over his head—as long as his poker face is in better shape than his prostate and that his look-alike never turns up.

Historia
In Sweden there is a kind of decluttering called döstädning, dö meaning "death" and städning meaning "cleaning." This surprising and invigorating process of clearing out unnecessary belongings can be undertaken at any age or life stage but should be done sooner rather than later, before others have to do it for you. In The Gentle Art of Swedish Death Cleaning, artist Margareta Magnusson, with Scandinavian humor and wisdom, instructs listeners to embrace minimalism.

A memoir, not really about the topic
Revisado: 12-22-24
This was supposed to be about going through and clearing out your clutter to free you up and save your relatives from having to do it after you die. Instead, it was a bunch of strong opinions, “shoulds,” and stories. I was disappointed that it wasn’t helpful.

I thoroughly enjoyed this novel. The story, the narrator, and the whole idea drew me in. Comparing the 1950s to 2023 was a fun element. I was not able to predict what would happen, and I loved that. Definitely recommend.

They came after the Diseray. Some were terrors ripped from our collective imaginations, remnants of every mythology across the world. And some were like nothing anyone had ever dreamed up, even in their worst nightmares. Now, the luckiest Cits live in enclosed communities, behind walls that keep them safe from the hideous monsters fighting to break through.

Hard to put down
Revisado: 12-10-23
I was totally drawn in by both the story and the narration. The characters were well fleshed out and the world the author created was developed in a natural way that flowed as the story progressed. I’m eager to see if there is a sequel and will be looking forward to other books narrated by the same narrator, as well as others by this author.

Historia
Rattled by fears, that she is losing not just keys, but her job, looks - even a sweetheart - Gail rashly announces that she will go alone to Paris, a dream postponed for 40 years. So begins the journey through France of an optimistic, infinitely curious, 62 year woman, who seeks to ransom her self-confidence and learn how to age. Deftly weaving scenic description with sketches of feisty Frenchwomen and flashbacks of older women she has admired, Gail draws wisdom from people and places that have gracefully endured the passing years.

I decided to order the audio book after working in a small book shop over the summer. Every single copy of this book had been purchased - so I knew I wanted to check it out. I truly enjoyed this memoir and while it was not read by the author, it seemed like it was. It is encouraging, thoughtful and enjoyable - especially for women in their later years as they come into their own and appreciate their stage of life. Highly recommend!

Incredible - a must read
Revisado: 10-02-23
I’ve never been much of a history buff and have not enjoyed political discussions. But as I’ve questioned how this country got to the state it’s in, I have found this book to be so clear and informative. I believe it’s a vital read for all who are able to vote. The author is extremely knowledgeable and has a way of making history come alive. I even felt a glimmer of hope at the end. Definitely recommend it!

This is an achingly beautiful novel, so well written and performed. I highly recommend it. By the end, I wondered if it had actually been someone’s true story and not fiction. The way the author went back and forth between voices was so smooth and it culminated in everything coming together perfectly. It will stay with me for a very long time.

I totally enjoyed this story. The narrator’s voice was whiny at times, although that was probably my true to character. It was fun trying to figure out who Eden could trust. My one criticism is the overuse of the word “smirk.”
