Unforgettable!
Revisado: 05-05-25
“Roses in December” by Mark Gibson is a deeply moving, beautifully written book that tugged at every corner of my heart. It made me laugh out loud, and at times, literally cry. The emotions run deep, the storytelling is rich, and the message lingers long after the final page. It’s one of those rare reads that feels both tender and transformative. Absolutely unforgettable. Like James, I’ll remember this one forever!

Historia
Hillbilly Elegy is a passionate and personal analysis of a culture in crisis - that of white working-class Americans. The decline of this group, a demographic of our country that has been slowly disintegrating over 40 years, has been reported on with growing frequency and alarm but has never before been written about as searingly from the inside. J. D. Vance tells the true story of what a social, regional, and class decline feels like when you were born with it hung around your neck.

Historia
It begins on the shaded town square in a sleepy Southern town. A spirited seven-year-old has a brisk business at her lemonade stand. But the little girl’s pretty yellow dress can’t quite hide the ugly scar on her chest. Her latest customer, a bearded stranger, drains his cup and heads to his car, his mind on a boat he's restoring at a nearby lake. The stranger understands more about the scar than he wants to admit. And the beat-up bread truck careening around the corner with its radio blaring is about to change the trajectory of both their lives.

Powerful and Heart Stopping
Revisado: 08-22-22
I almost called this review, “my new favorite book. Ever.”
But that just doesn’t do it justice.
I’m breathless and without words… what a moving experience was this book. I feel like my own heart stopped and was restarted with a surge of 360 joules. Perhaps actually living near Clayton and being a physician also, attributed to this book truly shaking me to my core. But it did. So powerful. I will listen to this book again and again. And purchase a hard copy to read in print. It’s accuracy about Lake Burton, about cardiology and medicine, about the type of faith and love for God that this area overflows with… was just pinpoint perfect. Mr. Martin’s research that went into this book must have been as mountainous as the blue ridges it describes. Thank you, Mr. Charles Martin, for this powerfully moving masterpiece. It touched a piece of my soul like no other.

NOT his best-
Revisado: 05-10-22
I love this author, but this book… not his best. Poor story development filled with incredible coincidences that are if not impossible, certainly improbable. It’s very far-fetched and incredible. This book required a long narrative at the end to make sense of most of it… more than the typical “surprise-ending- tie-it-together” type of ending. I love the heart of this author. I love how his faith is interwoven into this book. I love the narrator’s voice. I think this could have been an amazing story with better story development, fewer coincidences (just happened to hear a mom crying, just happened to have met the girl, happened to be found by Ellie, happened to find a dog of a man who happened to have been a worker for the bad guy…). Just… too many unbelievable events. It’s a small world, after all, but not THAT small. The main character was unbelievable (punching through a Porsche window?? Picking Bones up by the neck after describing how fit Bones is? Not likely… or maybe we need a back history as a Special Forces Navy Seal or Green Beret… ). It was also poorly researched from a medical point of view… “strain of cancer,” the details of Marie’s cardiomyopathy. It’s likely most folks don’t pick up on this though (I practice medicine for a living). Maybe this would make for a good screenplay for a movie. A cross between “Taken,” “Miami Vice,” and “Bridges of Madison County.” I LOVE this author’s books, “Wrapped in Rain,” “Long Way Gone,” “the Mountain Between Us,” and I still look forward to reading some of his others. I probably won’t bother reading the sequels to this one though. I’m going to stick to his drama/love stories but perhaps evade any future thrillers by this author.

When their last outgoing flight is cancelled, Ben finds a charter plane that can take him around the storm and drop him in Denver to catch a connection. And when the pilot says the single-engine prop plane can fit one more, if barely, Ben offers the seat to Ashley, knowing that she needs to get home just as urgently. And then the unthinkable happens. The pilot has a heart attack, and the plane crashes into one of the largest stretches of harsh and remote land in the United States.

Loved it!
Revisado: 05-05-22
I thought this book was fantastic. I think the author did an excellent job getting into the mind of a physician… Being one I’m always wary of having to read books with physician characters. I loved both main characters. I thought the storyline was incredible. It did remind me a little bit of the book Hatchet, but only because there is a plane crash due to a heart attack. I have enjoyed other books by this author, including Wrapped in Rain. I could not put this one down…. It brought me to tears a few times. I highly recommend this book.
