Motivated reasoning at its finest
Revisado: 04-08-23
Dr Drew has undoubtedly helped many people. Unfortunately, he has most likely harmed more than he has helped. As someone who has escaped a mind controlling cult, his ideological statements resonate strongly with pious leaders who throw shame on anyone who doesn’t agree with the doctrine. He pulls old philosophical arguments to prop up his outdated view of the world. If you like the idea of women having to wear a scarlet letter for wearing a mid drift, this is your book.

Wonderful historical stories coupled with bad advice
Revisado: 04-14-19
This book is an overreach of knowledge. Don’t get me wrong, there are many wonderful nuggets in this book. The advice, however, is only good for a segment of the population.
Examples:
When describing the evolution of an individual, it appears he believes that everyone will follow his life progression; that is being a rebellious youth who fights against his parents thinking. I would wager half the population are not wild child’s and rebel against their parents.
From this projection, he goes on to explain the importance of fighting against the old ideas of the past. His advice: when your gut is telling you not to fight against the establishment, that means you should push even harder. Wow. Really?
Another example of bad advice is when discussing how we should view death, that we should view our impending death as a deadline to create more urgency in life. This is the kind of advice one gives when they have just begun to contemplate death and is in itself a coping mechanism. This is horrible advice for the anxious mind but perhaps good advice for someone who thinks like Mr Greene.
The advice given will be great for some but devastating for others. Some of the bad advice is benign, such as looking into the stars at night to get a sense of the sublime. I have always felt the sublime by doing this but my wife has an opposite experience: it scares her.
This book would be great if after the stories, multiple perspectives were given with an understanding of individual personalities, rather than one guy’s opinion taken as laws. And also, 27 hours? Really? I think those who rated this so high perhaps were not listening with a questioning mind and were then influenced by the endowment affect: “I committed much of my life to this so it must be of great value.”

I was hoping for something new. Nope. At least give us some cool startup rituals or a game plan to build up discipline slowly. This was just another pick yourself up by your bootstraps. This only works if you are Les Brown performing, not in a book.

This book provides an excellent psychological framework for CHRISTIANS. There is nothing wrong with that per se. I did, however, get tired of the incessant quotations of the Bible to drive home his point. I am not an atheist but I did find it strange when he told people who claim they are atheist, “NO you are not!!”
Jordan’s use of motivated reasoning for Christianity got pretty old. It wasn’t just a little here and there; the whole book was imbued with it.
That being said, there is more than enough nuggets in the book that made it worth my time. I am grateful for the work Jordan has done and will continue to folllow him. I just wanted to give my atheists friends and those who can’t stand listening to motivated reasoning a heads up.

Revisado: 11-26-17
Cognitive science is my passion and hobby. I’ve read all of Cialdinis works, thinking fast and slow (kahneman), multiple “Great Courses” on the subject, Malcom gladwell, and many others. While I can honestly say that I didn’t learn anything new, Nick has done an amazing job condensing all the facts down with incisive brevity. It is not drawn out like most of the other books. If you are new to this topic, Start With This Book first!

A necessary voice in an Eckhart Tolle world
Revisado: 10-20-17
I can’t recommend this book highly enough. I’m tired of the fluffy self help books that talk about finding your passion in life and then all will be easy. Get off your butt. Have discipline. Engage in life and stop making excuses for your lack of success. When other books focus on reframing the world to make you feel good about your current effort, these guys call BS and hold you accountable for your life.
It sounds like this book would not be fun to listen to, but it is. Discipline has become a bad word. It’s even used as an analogy for punishment. But it is the path to freedom.

Not for achievers
Revisado: 10-11-17
I love Dr Puff. I can tell that he has helped myriads of people. His advice is solid for anyone who has had their lives hijacked by stress, anxiety, or depression.
I did find that as I listened to this and applied the recommendations, that I had no drive for life. Spending time in my awareness and being in a zen like state, tempers all of my emotions down; even the helpful ones. It kind of reminds me of when I applied Eckhart Tohles principles: I was in the moment but I was getting nothing done. Those of us who have a family to provide for can’t spend a year living on a park bench, like Eckhart, and feel good about abdicating our parental responsibilities.
For me, a complete life involves Dr Puffs advice and learning how to use our emotions to get things done. I love having a fire in my belly and experiencing the full color of available emotions. Where there is passion and work, there is life.
I highly recommend this book! I just also recommend having something that is motivational and goal specific to balance out the perspective.
