Twisty Plot
Revisado: 07-10-25
Okay, it took me a bit to winner where the author was going. Then I spent several chapters wondering if I should let the kids hear it. But the point was definite made when the readers/ listeners started cheering for the main character to make the right decisions.
Great book!

Historia
Twelve-year-old Dory Byrne lives with her brothers on New York City's Lower East Side, waiting impatiently through the darkest hours of World War II for her pop to come home from fighting Hitler. Legally speaking, Dory's brother, Fish, isn't old enough to be in charge of Dory and her younger brother, Pike, but the neighborhood knows the score and, like Pop always says, "the neighborhood will give you what you need." There's the lady from the bakery, who saves them leftover crullers. The kind landlord who checks in on them.

Good story. Each character grows and leans into their challenges. Held out attention though it took a bit to get into. Ended with strong improvement in each one.

Historia
It’s the very end of eighth grade and all everyone can talk about is high school—everyone except Ellie Cowan. Ellie wants to freeze time. Middle school was epic. She moved to Oklahoma, made her best friends, won a baking championship, quit a beauty pageant, and dominated Putt-Putt golf in her wheelchair. But now her feelings for her best friend Bert are starting to change. When did Bert get so cute? And why are all the other girls suddenly noticing, too? As if that isn’t enough to deal with, Grandpa’s health takes a turn for the worse.

The simple trust

The simple trust and consistency in prayer that helped meet basic needs for 1000s of children. I appreciate how the orphanages morphed to the needs and how those who ran it were willing to make changes.
