Historia
Sarah Kurchak is autistic. She hasn’t let that get in the way of pursuing her dream to become a writer, or to find love, but she has let it get in the way of being in the same room with someone chewing food loudly and of cleaning her bathroom sink. In I Overcame My Autism and All I Got Was This Lousy Anxiety Disorder, Kurchak examines the Byzantine steps she took to become “an autistic success story”, how the process almost ruined her life, and how she is now trying to recover.

Honest, real, funny, heartbreaking, validating
Revisado: 09-11-24
Sarah tells her story with a raw honesty that makes you feel it. I had several laugh out loud moments, and moments I was in tears, and moments where I had to stop and Google the references. I cannot overstate how profoundly this book moved me, or how enriched I feel after reading it. I want to go back through again and take notes.

Historia
Language defines us as a species, placing humans head and shoulders above even the most proficient animal communicators. But it also beguiles us with its endless mysteries, allowing us to ponder why different languages emerged, why there isn't simply a single language, how languages change over time and whether that's good or bad, and how languages die out and become extinct.

Historia
Serenity is bound for the planet Kerry with a hold full of sealed unidentified cargo for the planet’s highest-ranking nobleman. The duke is a surprisingly genial man whose court brings all the fanciness and fun of Persephone’s high society but little of the pretension—and, most importantly, he’s got the promise of more work. Obliged to stick around while Inara is with a client—and hoping to score future employment—the crew settles in. The liquor flows freely at court, and there’s food, entertainment, and comfortable lodgings to enjoy.

By far, the best of the books so far
Revisado: 09-07-22
I'm just happy to see my friends from the 'verse. I'd read almost anything. But the characters in this are so well fleshed out. their motivations and connections are developed. The story is a perfect encapsulation of the crew. The dialogue is so good. And it feels more like a 'verse with the history of that 'verse.
Just really great. I hope this author writes more Firefly.

Historia
Nine hundred light-years from home, Major Andrew Grayson and the crew of NACS Washington are marooned in a sunless system with limited water, reactor fuel, and food. The last hope for survival is to go where nothing human has gone before. After embarking on a scouting mission to the only moon with surface signs of life, Andrew and his Special Tactics Team make two startling discoveries. One is a dream: a form of protein and plant life that could save the starving humans in the rogue system. The second is a nightmare: this harvested rock is infested with Lankies.

Really enjoyed this book, and I'm happy it ends here. Great action, great character stories, some fun astrobiology. Looking forward to more Frontlines stories with different focus. I have high hopes for some of these newer characters. 😃

Historia
A revolution brewing for generations has begun in fire. It will end in blood. The Free Navy - a violent group of Belters in black-market military ships - has crippled the Earth and begun a campaign of piracy and violence among the outer planets. The colony ships heading for the thousand new worlds on the far side of the alien ring gates are easy prey, and no single navy remains strong enough to protect them. James Holden and his crew know the strengths and weaknesses of this new force better than anyone.

I love The Expanse TV series, and everybody has been telling me I should read the books.
I don't enjoy most written sci fi, but this is just outstanding storytelling. Absolutely top notch. I'm getting ready to start book 3... only stopping to write this review so you do, too.

Wow. I enjoy fiction again!
Revisado: 11-09-21
My audible library is title after title of nonfiction. This book popped up as a recommendation, and I'm so glad I tried it.
Holy cow, the voice performance by the narrator is outstanding.
If you appreciate the humour, stories, and characters of authors like Elmore Leonard, Tom Sharpe, Carl Hiaasen, Robert Anton Wilson, or Tom Robbins, this is a worthy title in that vein. Take it like that, with everything that goes along with it, and it's a lot of fun. I had a lot of fun with it. I'm glad I took the recommendation.

In Who We Are and How We Got Here, Reich allows listeners to discover how the human genome provides not only all the information a human embryo needs to develop but also the hidden story of our species.

Outstanding science, some questionable editorializing
Revisado: 07-02-21
I am a former bioinformatician. As a scientist this book blew me away. I am not sure what my favourite parts are: the stories about what they discovered, or the stories about how they developed and applied methods to make those discoveries. It's a great example of the power of computation and the power of careful statistical thinking. And I learned a ton about the current state of anthropology, which was instructove and exciting for me.
However, I can understand the criticisms of this book, even if I don't agree with most of them. He does name and struggle with the very real impact that unethical medicine and science has had on indigenous populations, but I can't shake the feeling that he's a little cavalier, and a little deep in the motivated reasoning, on his quest for knowledge. Which... I mean, if you're doing research, I get it. I also want more data. I also want mysteries solved. I also want to discover new things.
He calls out bad science and bad public policy. He calls out the misuse of the trust placed in researchers. I'm just a little concerned that some very real, reasonable, and well-grounded concerns of indigenous people are named but dismissed without full consideration.
All in all, I loved this book. I'm going to go in search of another work that struggles more directly and more carefully with the social implications of this kind of work, but for the science alone I heartily recommend this book to anyone, with or without a biology background.

He's such a good storyteller. I loved hearing the story of his rise through organizing and then state politics, but the narration of the events I remember in history were my favourite parts. And he's fantastic to listen to. It's an epic commitment, but worth it.
