This book is listed for any age reader 9 years and older. It catches and keeps your attention from start to end. There is suspense, danger, several misconceptions, a little bit of the paranormal, and love. The story kept my attention until the end.

I listened to the audible version which was narrated by Aven Shore. She did a wonderful job of making the voices sound like the various characters. I won’t repeat the synopsis, but reading it made me wonder.

What kind of accident would cause Avery to be missing?
And what illness could she have that makes finding her time-sensitive?
Then there is the foal, Freedom, who seems to know so much and tries to lead Jani to Avery.
Listen to this entertaining story and get all the answers and more. You don’t want to miss this one!.

Can love truly conquer all?

In book 5 Nathan Oleson and his family have welcomed his brother Kevin’s 4 children into the fold. Kevin made a living on the road, so his family never settled in one place. The youngest 3 boys now have an opportunity to settle down, work the land, and learn responsibility.

John, the eldest son, is offered a section of Oleson land and wants to build a small house of his own. His savings is not enough so he gets a bank loan to purchase materials. After talking with the banker, he stops by the café before leaving town. Alicia, the banker’s niece, is setting at a table with a man. John has met her only once, but knows she is shy, timid, and hides in the shadows; this man is frightening her. John acts like he is her beau and goes over to help. When Alicia sees John, she offers him her hand and asks him to take her away from there.

Alicia’s parents sent her to her Uncle in Belle Fourche in hopes he can find her a proper husband. As an incentive, the Uncle offers a partnership in the bank. This makes her the target of one of the bank employees, a vile man with ulterior motives. John is the only man that Alicia has ever felt comfortable talking to. But his little lie to rescue her has set things in motion that neither of them know how to handle. John knows Alicia’s station in life is far above his and eventually the truth must be told. Alicia feels safe with John and pleads with him to keep up the ruse. As much as he cares for her, John knows the truth must be told. How long can they perpetuate this lie without consequences for both? And who is spreading vile lies about them around town?

This is a stand-alone story that can be enjoyed out of sequence. However, it does continue following the lives of main characters from the previous stories. “When Shadows Break” is a heart-warming story. It brings to light how being raised with wealth, education and proper etiquette can make a difference for those who were not. What happens when the truth is told? Can love truly conquer all?

Sweet time travel with a twist.

Present Day: Charlene was tricked into marriage by a man that was everything nice; until they were married. After that he became her abusive jailer. When she won't obey he takes her to his family's old ranch in the mountains that has been deserted for over 60 years. He leaves her in the broken down empty house for 5 days hoping that without food or water, she will be compliant when he returns. Charlene falls asleep on the floor and awakens 110 years in the past. This is a sweet story with some unpredictable twists and turns.

Can a cowgirl and billionaire work together?

Another great Chance Creek story by Cora Seton. I read the book several years ago, but wanted to try the audible version. I always get a second view of the story when listening to someone read it. Bella is a vet from Chance Creek who needs money fast to save her vet clinic and shelter. Evan must get married within 30 days or lose control of his corporation. Both sign up for a reality show pitting the contestants against each other with various challenges. Both want to win, but start seeing their opponent in a different light as the days go by. Who will win? Bella or Evan? Will they play fair, or try to sabotage the other just to win the game.

Finding someone to trust enough to share the past

Another great read made better by Tom Stechschulte's narration. His deep sexy cowboy voice sounds just like what you think the character should sound like. No wonder our heroine falls for this man! Wyatt is a loner made that way because of events in his past. Returning to his house for lunch he finds a baby left on his doorstep. Confused and not knowing what to do for a crying infant, he goes next door and ask his new neighbor, Elli, for assistance. Elli is house sitting for a friend; hiding away nursing her broken heart from a year full of pain. Wyatt is gruff and not used to social niceties while Elli is suffering from low self-esteem. Due to the sudden arrival of sweet little Darcy, they try to work together for the sake of this child. Within a short time, secrets from their past’s are revealed and emotions are tested. The development of the story is at a steady pace and is like peeling an onion one layer at a time until all their past traumas are confronted. Ms. Alward writes so the reader isn’t aware of the whole truth until the characters reveal their secrets. I recommend this story made better by listening to the audible version available on “Audible Escapes”.

Beautiful Christmas Story

Emma had been betrothed to the Duke for three years, and for three years she has not seen him. Right before Christmas he comes to her brother's house to break off the engagement. He feels he is not what she needs, and knows he will never love a woman. Emma deserves better. What he finds when she confronts him is not the sweet, shy girl he left three years ago. Emma is now a grown woman and furious with him! She gives him back his ring and unconventionally tells him to leave and never come back. As no woman has ever acted that way to him he is at a loss what to do. He stays a few more days to assure himself she is alright and her nieces and nephew decide to help things along. How much mischief can three young children cause?

Isla has been confined to a wheelchair since birth, but she doesn't let it slow her down. Her best friend is Duncan who she met at school when they were young. Duncan has not had the good home life and support given to Isla by her family. The two are best friends, but Duncan has had to fight for what he has, now having his dream job of being a youth minister. Isla's dream for many years has been to win gold at the paraplegic Olympic games. Duncan is her coach and helps her with her games and practice runs. When she gets tunnel vision about making winning first place the most important thing in her life, he encourages her to make a “bucket list” of other things she would like to do, but never had the opportunity to experience. Isla has been in love with her best friend Duncan as long as she can remember, so the last item on her list is to be kissed under the mistletoe at Christmas. Duncan is also in love with Isla but is afraid to cross the “friend’s zone”. Both secretly want the same thing, but don’t want to lose the other as a friend if things don’t work out. Duncan came up with the “bucket list” idea to spend more time with Isla other than just being her coach. Will his plan work out? Or will Isla still put her dream of winning first above everything else.

Beauty comes from the heart.

Such a wonderful and moving story of two people that are broken in very different ways. Savannah is beautiful, but her spirit is broken from the loss of her job. Asher is a severely wounded war veteran that has hidden in his house for 8 years. As he says "I scare little children" This is a story of love, trust, hope and forgiveness. Rose Hudson does a wonderful job in her narration. At times it seemed like there were several people reading as she transitioned between the characters voices. I just LOVE that Southern Drawl!

Francis Arnsby has always been the romantic of the seven sisters. Her dream is to become a romance writer. She has a chance to go visit her “Pen Pal” Constance Charity in Rapid City and takes her manuscript with her. She hopes to get the newspaper interested in her story. Dressed in Constance’s finery she meets with Clive Davidson one of the reporters. He says he will read her story and advise. Clive can tell from her writing that she has never experience a man’s love or romance. It is hard to write about what you don’t know, so he comes up with an idea. Clive is supposed to find entertainment for a wealthy visiting Englishman. If he can set Francis up on a dinner date with the man, she can experience a gentleman’s attention and he can do his job at the same time. All seems well until Clive meets the man. One look tells him he is NO gentleman! Now what does he do! After their date Francis wants nothing more to do with this Mr. Turner, and Turner sees an “un-plucked flower” he wants. And what he wants, he gets. Can Clive appease the Englishman and protect Francis at the same time? What happens when he has to make a hard choice; his job – or his heart?

The secondary plot in the story is about Constance, her friend. This is the first time they have met, and Francis can see the vast difference in their stations in life. They also have differences on what is right or wrong when looking for a man. Will Constance lead Francis astray, or will she be strong enough to prevail. This is a wonderfully written story and portrays how vicious lies and gossip can ruin someone’s reputation forever.
