Not terrible but....
Revisado: 05-01-24
The story and the twists aren't bad but the characters, especially the main character, are just so unlikeable! Joanna, the main character, just struck me as so obnoxious and annoying and overdramatic!

The story and narration were both pretty good
Revisado: 04-27-24
I thought the story and narration were both really good but I just couldn't give it 5 stars for the following reasons. *SPOILERS....SPOILERS....SPOILERS* STOP READING NOW!!
First, in this day and age where over 40% of babies are born to single mothers (not to mention divorce, death, blended families, etc..) and the fact that we don't live in the 1600s, would any 4th grade kids even use the word "bastard" anymore?? Or even know what the word means? The main character's son being bullied and called a "bastard" by other kids just because there is no father in the picture rang false for me.
The other part of the story I had a problem with is when the main character has her first meeting with the man who murdered her friends, terrorized her, and tried to murder her after taking her virginity and telling her he loved her.......she WAY too quickly (in my opinion) gets over her angst and hatred of him.....why? Because he's handsome and looks "sad"??? Are you kidding me??? She can't smell the kind of aftershave he wore or see a particular necklace without going into a major free-fall panic attack....but she's just FINE seeing him! Sorry...yet another thing that just made no sense and rang false.

Not too bad
Revisado: 03-26-24
The stories weren't bad and weren't nearly as gory as some of the reviews indicated. Quite a few of the endings did feel rushed and abrupt though, almost as though the author couldn't figure out how to end them and just kind of threw an ending together last minute. I normally don't complain about narration...if the story is good enough I can get past bad narration, however, this narrator made it hard to even listen to the stories. He sounds like he just learned to read and over-enunciates throughout (especially the article "a!" Seriously, every time he pronounced that simple sound it made me cringe and want to stop listening!)

Average
Revisado: 05-19-21
This isn't Oates best book, but not her worst either. I've read other reviews complaining about the narration and, while I didn't find it so jarring that I couldn't continue listening, it did annoy me that the narrator felt the need to give the Mulvaneys southern accents. Why is "country" and/or "rural" thought of to be exclusive to the American south? It's so cliche! The book actually mentions that the parents are originally from the Pittsburgh and Central NY area and, as a resident of Central NY myself, I can certainly attest that no one born here (or in Pittsburgh for that matter) has a southern accent.
