Love this author
Revisado: 03-21-25
A fascinating look into Mormon life in the 70s through the eyes of different characters, all dealing with their own personal issues. Hawker does such an amazing job at developing character slowly but thoroughly. The narration was a little slow, but other than that, it was an amazing story.

As a midwife and healer, she is privy to much of what goes on behind closed doors in Hallowell. Her diary is a record of every birth and death, crime and debacle that unfolds in the close-knit community. Months earlier, Martha documented the details of an alleged rape committed by two of the town’s most respected gentlemen—one of whom has now been found dead in the ice.

You will lose yourself in this historical novel. I couldn’t put it down. The characters, town, river all came alive for me. The plot is intriguing and different than most similar stories.

Fascinating characters and unique storyline

Characters were well developed and I felt like I really knew them, strengths and weaknesses. They were all so human, not stock. Well worth the read.

Wonderful look into the roaring ‘20’s through a woman’s eyes. Interesting connection to the world of bourbon and a special car that confects the past to the present.

Dark, yet intriguing
Revisado: 12-10-24
The first chapter grabs you, but it does get a bit confusing as additional storylines are introduced. It does all come together with many different twists and turns while taking time to develop the characters. I couldn’t put it down.

Historia
When two Union soldiers stumble onto a plantation in northern Georgia on a warm May day in 1864, the last thing they expect is to see the Union flag flying high - or to be greeted by a group of freed slaves and their Jewish mistress. Little do they know that this place has an unusual history. Twelve years prior, Adelaide Mannheim - daughter of Mordecai, the only Jewish planter in the county - was given her own maid, a young slave named Rachel. The two became friends, and soon they discovered a secret.

Ironic, but honestly portrayed relationship between two unlikely sisters
Revisado: 08-04-17
Interesting and well developed story of two women and the outside forces that influence and control their lives. Main characters were believable although some of the minor characters were stereotypical. The concentrated more on the women's relationship, rather than the war which was refreshing for this genre. I would recommend it for someone who enjoys knowing characters inside and out.

A must read!
Revisado: 12-18-16
I am a fan of Jodi Picoult, but this novel is not like her others. This one forces us to look at ourselves in a way that makes us uncomfortable. I am a high school principal and former English teacher. I would recommend this for 12th graders and faculty. The Socratic seminars would be eye-opening, I'm sure.
