Historia
Spanning millennia and continents, here is a stunningly revealing history of how the distribution of water has shaped human civilization. Giulio Boccaletti - honorary research associate at the Smith School of Enterprise and the Environment, University of Oxford - shrewdly combines environmental and social history, beginning with the earliest civilizations of sedentary farmers on the banks of the Nile, the Tigris, and the Euphrates Rivers.

Fascinating book.
Revisado: 10-31-23
This is one of the best books I have ever listened to. The depth of Mr. Boccaletti’s knowledge is astounding, and I am grateful that he has put it at the service of society. I always like it, when a book is read by its author, and he reads beautifully.

Historia
In 1848, a year of international democratic revolt, a young, enslaved couple, Ellen and William Craft, achieved one of the boldest feats of self-emancipation in American history. Posing as master and slave, while sustained by their love as husband and wife, they made their escape together across more than 1,000 miles, riding out in the open on steamboats, carriages, and trains that took them from bondage in Georgia to the free states of the North.

Fascinating story very well told

This story should be much more widely known. Listening to books like this on Audible, including All that She Carried and many excellent biographies of black women, has started to fill in gaps in my education. The Souls of Black Folk, by W.E.B. Du Bois, is available for free! Thank you!

A lecture series

Excellent, detailed presentation by two outstanding scholars.
Revisado: 03-20-22
Dr. Crystal R. Sanders is the main presenter, and I found her chapters very interesting. Dr. Reginald Ellis presents two chapters which were also fascinating. I was glad to become more aware of these institutions, or gems, as they are rightly called. I am now inspired to learn even more about them.

A must read.
Revisado: 08-06-21
Clint Smith has written an excellent book. The combination of historian and poet gives him a unique voice. I did not want to stop listening. On Audible you can’t exactly say “page turner“ but that is how I experienced it. The book deepened my understanding of the centrality of slavery to our story as a nation. I am grateful to Mr. Smith for this book.
