Historia
April 25, 1986 in Chernobyl was a turning point in world history. The disaster not only changed the world’s perception of nuclear power and the science that spawned it, but also our understanding of the planet’s delicate ecology. With the images of the abandoned homes and playgrounds beyond the barbed wire of the 30-kilometer Exclusion Zone, the rusting graveyards of contaminated trucks and helicopters, the farmland lashed with black rain, the event fixed for all time the notion of radiation as an invisible killer.

Feel good hit of the year! (Sarcasm) author did a great job of intertwining technical details and the human toll of the disaster

Ruppel Shell follows the elusive eel from Maine to the Sargasso Sea, stalking riversides, fishing holes, laboratories, restaurants, courtrooms, and America's first commercial eel "family farm." This is an enthralling, globe-spanning look at an animal that you may never come to love, but which will never fail to astonish you.

Interesting to hear about the eel trade as well as the history and ecology. Every time I listened to this while high, the narrator sounded like an ai trained on Moira Rose dialogue…

Historia
The Latin term for the female genitalia, pudendum, means “parts for which you should be ashamed”. Until 1651, ovaries were called female testicles. The fallopian tubes are named for a man. Named, claimed, and shamed: Welcome to the story of the female body, as penned by men. Today, a new generation of (mostly) women scientists is finally redrawing the map. With modern tools and fresh perspectives, they’re looking at the organs traditionally bound up in reproduction—the uterus, ovaries, vagina—and seeing within them a new biology of change and resilience.

Great info! Questionable production choices.
Revisado: 02-04-24
I really enjoyed the content of this book, it was accessible and engrossing.
I hated a lot of the production choices made for this book. While the narrator has a lovely voice and delivery, and brought a great balance emotion and tone to the content, I wish they had been allowed to use their natural accent, because their American accent was just off enough that I found it very distracting. Also, it was clear that nobody with a professional biological sciences or medical background was available to help with pronunciation of medical and scientific terms. I don’t think that a narrator should have to have a degree in the sciences to narrate a book like this, but I feel like they were not set up for success by not having access to a scientific consultant or editor for pronunciation questions.

In Oakland, California, in 1966, community college students Bobby Seale and Huey Newton armed themselves, began patrolling the police, and promised to prevent police brutality. Unlike the Civil Rights Movement that called for full citizenship rights for blacks within the US, the Black Panther Party rejected the legitimacy of the US government and positioned itself as part of a global struggle against American imperialism.

Historia
In May 1315 it started to rain. It didn't stop anywhere in north Europe until August. Next came the four coldest winters in a millennium. Two separate animal epidemics killed nearly 80 percent of northern Europe's livestock. Wars between Scotland and England, France and Flanders, and two rival claimants to the Holy Roman Empire destroyed all remaining farmland. After seven years, the combination of lost harvests, warfare, and pestilence would claim six million lives - one eighth of Europe's total population.

Historia
This paradigm-shattering book provides an even-handed, science-based understanding of who women are, both on and off the pill. It will change the way that women think about their hormones and how they view themselves. It also serves as a rallying cry for women to demand more information from science about how their bodies and brains work and to advocate for better research. This book will help women make more informed decisions about their health, whether they're on the pill or off of it.

Good for young adults or those without a science background
Revisado: 05-18-22
I’ve got a BS in a human biology related field and I found it to be a little too simplistic, but I would absolutely recommend it for a high school student who is interested in the topic or someone considering birth control who doesn’t have a background in science.
I didn’t feel like some of the scientific points were explained well, given that some studies were preliminary and haven’t been repeated yet. Also, some of the studies discussed have been talking points for political organizations seeking to take away people’s health care options (though the author clearly states that this is not their opinion)
To me, the colloquial writing style didn’t pair well with the narration, at times it felt like I was being lectured by a grade school teacher who was trying to sound cool by cursing.

When we think of fungi, we likely think of mushrooms. But mushrooms are only fruiting bodies, analogous to apples on a tree. Most fungi live out of sight, yet make up a massively diverse kingdom of organisms that supports and sustains nearly all living systems. Fungi provide a key to understanding the planet on which we live, and the ways we think, feel, and behave.

I loved this book, it made me want to be absorbed into the dirt, but I listened to it stoned af and have a penchant for accents.
(Only complaint was that Richard Dawkins was referenced multiple times, years he has made lots of offensive public statements)

Obviously Jim Cummings did an amazing job at bringing Hondo to life as a narrator, but he also knocked the Han Solo voice outta the park. Hearing Hondo do sound effects and wookie dialogue made me giggle with glee every time.
