I finally had enough of the female lead’s whiny, immature persona. I literally stopped listening with 8 minutes remaining because I realized I didn’t care if she was eaten by dragons or boiled alive.

Another wonderful Shardlake mystery. It drags a bit in the middle but the narrator, Steven Crossley, kept me going.

Historia
Helene Wecker's dazzling debut novel tells the story of two supernatural creatures who appear mysteriously in 1899 New York. Chava is a golem, a creature made of clay, brought to life by a strange man who dabbles in dark Kabbalistic magic. When her master dies at sea on the voyage from Poland, she is unmoored and adrift as the ship arrives in New York Harbor. Ahmad is a jinni, a being of fire, born in the ancient Syrian Desert. Trapped in an old copper flask by a Bedouin wizard centuries ago, he is released accidentally by a tinsmith in a Lower Manhattan shop.

Clever story of voodoo and hoodoo
Revisado: 06-20-14
I enjoyed this enough to buy the sequel but I won't buy anymore with Dave Fennoy narrating. Although Mr. Fennoy is a well-known voice actor, he failed to place the right accents on many characters. Most characters, regardless of background, had a deep southern African American accent. But the worst was the Hispanic detective that sounded like Count Dracula. It was ridiculous.

Historia
Northern Ireland, spring 1981. Hunger strikes, riots, power cuts, a homophobic serial killer with a penchant for opera, and a young woman’s suicide that may yet turn out to be murder: on the surface, the events are unconnected, but then things—and people—aren’t always what they seem. Detective Sergeant Duffy is the man tasked with trying to get to the bottom of it all. It’s no easy job—especially when it turns out that one of the victims was involved in the IRA but was last seen discussing business with someone from the loyalist Ulster Volunteer Force.

11 hrs 37 mins and still waiting for a plot
Revisado: 05-26-14
Would you try another book from Susan Hill and/or Steven Pacey?
Loved Hill's "The Various Haunts of Men" Steven Pacey has a pleasant reading voice but sometimes hard to tell when there was a character change. Maybe he was just as bored as I was.
What do you think your next listen will be?
Wilkie Collins
Have you listened to any of Steven Pacey’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
Ok
If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from The Pure in Heart?
You could cut any scene or character and it wouldn't change the book. Seems to be just unrelated descriptions of people and their lives.
Any additional comments?
I would have ended the book with a serial killer taking out all of the characters. Oh, except for the children. And the labrador.
