This was gorgeous

I cannot recommend this enough! How hauntingly beautiful. This story delicately unraveled in a way that felt honest to love and what it means to be alive. Wonderfully performed as well.

Wonderful retelling of a classic
Revisado: 03-18-25
James is a powerful retelling of the classic that I grew up on. Due to this being from the perspective of James it is obvious that the silly perspective of Huck is racist and problematic and most importantly incorrect. I appreciated this character taking the power back and giving us listeners the opportunity to see the best in him and see his struggles from a closer perspective. I this this book was written powerfully and beautifully.

Interesting lore to an epic world
Revisado: 02-09-25
First of all, I don’t think I would have read this book if I had known the trigger warnings. I understand that it is the horror that compels the story and the making of villains. Regardless of my interest to this world or the great storytelling, I don’t think anyone with a close sibling could handle this gruesome story. I hung on for the vindication and vengeance but instead I think it’s just more twisted than I could really handle. I love Piper‘s storytelling, but this lost me because I don’t really have a character that I’m rooting for. As a sidenote, excellent performance and I will of course read the rest of the series because I feel like the worst is already behind me and as messed up as the story is, I do love spending time in this fantasy world.

I can’t wait to read the next one! This is an excellent book and performance. The rhetoric and dialogue is unmatched. Sexual violence is a theme of this read, as a trigger warning.

Gut wrenchingly sad
Revisado: 12-10-24
It’s not what I expected, and was really surprised how angry I was for the mistreatment of the main characters. The feminist in me was raging the entire book. I think the stories of brave women are often not honored or retold, I’m grateful for this encompassing retelling. I will say, I’m not sure I can outright recommend this book due to the graphic content and disturbing mental turmoil, unless the reader is very stable. A trigger warning is probably needed. Anyhow, phenomenal writing and performance.

Historia
With courage, grace, and powerful insight, bestselling author Kristin Hannah captures the epic panorama of World War II and illuminates an intimate part of history seldom seen: the women's war. The Nightingale tells the stories of two sisters, separated by years and experience, by ideals, passion and circumstance, each embarking on her own dangerous path toward survival, love, and freedom in German-occupied, war-torn France—a heartbreakingly beautiful novel that celebrates the resilience of the human spirit and the durability of women. It is a novel for everyone, a novel for a lifetime.

Gentle yet powerful and full of love
Revisado: 08-31-24
Although I’ve cried for the better part of the day while I finished listening to this, I’m moved by how gentle and sweet this story is. For being a WW2 story it’s sentimental and full of love. It’s not trying to horrify and distract from the humanity and goodness of each beautiful person. The suffering of each individual is met with respect and appreciation of the strength they had to survive, it is so inspiring. I am so grateful for this narrator who brought each voice to life and for the author who so beautifully shared this inspiring story.

Historia
The Catenan Republic—the Hierarchy—may rule the world now, but they do not know everything. I tell them my name is Vis Telimus. I tell them I was orphaned after a tragic accident three years ago, and that good fortune alone has led to my acceptance into their most prestigious school. I tell them that once I graduate, I will gladly join the rest of civilized society in allowing my strength, my drive, and my focus—what they call Will—to be leeched away and added to the power of those above me, as millions already do. As all must eventually do.

Stunning
Revisado: 08-09-24
It was a slower start, the world building is elaborate and the politics extensive. I’m usually more drawn to witchy feminine fantasy, so the masculine testosterone driven hero was initially boring. The excellent narration and dramatic storyline led me on- all I can say is, this is a work of art. The detailed world building, intricate magic, interwoven politics, and complex characters drive home a story that brought on emotions of heart wrenching complexity. I haven’t cried listening to an audiobook ever and this still has my heart breaking. I can’t wait for the next book. This dark fantasy has Dune+Enders game+Neil Gaiman+Patrick Rothfuss. I could not recommend this book enough.
