Historia
Norman Mailer's dazzlingly rich, deeply evocative novel of ancient Egypt breathes life into the figures of a lost era: the eighteenth-dynasty Pharaoh Rameses and his wife, Queen Nefertiti; Menenhetet, their creature, lover, and victim; and the gods and mortals that surround them in intimate and telepathic communion. Mailer's reincarnated protagonist is carried through the exquisite gardens of the royal harem, along the majestic flow of the Nile, and into the terrifying clash of battle.

A brilliant writer
Revisado: 11-12-19
Mailer is a brilliant writer but only a so-so novelist. The book could not keep me engaged beyond the awesome language and imaging of the first part. As stated in other reviews, this is worth the price if you only reference the first hundred pages or so. A virtuoso turn of imagination and background research.

Historia
Clarke and Knake take us inside quantum-computing labs racing to develop cyber superweapons; bring us into the boardrooms of the many firms that have been hacked and the few that have not; and walk us through the corridors of the US intelligence community with officials working to defend America's elections from foreign malice. With a focus on solutions over scaremongering, they make a compelling case for "cyber resilience" - building systems that can resist most attacks, raising the costs on cyber criminals and the autocrats who often lurk behind them, and avoiding...overreaction.

Not too techie
Revisado: 11-12-19
A good overview of the current security position of the nation and our vulnerability to bad internet actors as well as how we are/can protect ourselves. I am not very well versed in the technology but enjoyed it even as it was, in spots, a little too deep for me.

Historia
An "epoch-defining book" (The Guardian) and "this generation’s Silent Spring" (The Washington Post), The Uninhabitable Earth is both a travelogue of the near future and a meditation on how that future will look to those living through it - the ways that warming promises to transform global politics, the meaning of technology and nature in the modern world, the sustainability of capitalism and the trajectory of human progress. The Uninhabitable Earth is also an impassioned call to action.

Historia
At the age of 16, in a nationwide selection for royal consorts, Cixi was chosen as one of the emperor's numerous concubines. When he died in 1861, their five-year-old son succeeded to the throne. Cixi at once launched a palace coup against the regents appointed by her husband and made herself the real ruler of China - behind the throne, literally, with a silk screen separating her from her officials who were all male.

Revisionist history at its best
Revisado: 09-09-19
Cixi's history has mostly been written by her enemies. They include traitors, Japanese enemies and folks who deride the thought that a woman could be so effective. Highly recommended for both history buffs and to better understand today's China.

Historia
In this paradigm-shattering book, biologist Mark W. Moffett draws on findings in psychology, sociology, and anthropology to explain the social adaptations that bind societies. He explores how the tension between identity and anonymity defines how societies develop, function, and fail. Surpassing Guns, Germs, and Steel and Sapiens, The Human Swarm reveals how mankind created sprawling civilizations of unrivaled complexity - and what it will take to sustain them.

Two books long
Revisado: 09-09-19
This could easily have been two books; One on zoology and one on anthropology. Both would have been a bit long. The zoology section carries too much information for the title of the book. The anthropology/political section reminded me of the excellent 'Clash of Civilizations' by Huntington, which is still a good read after 25 years.

Historia
In the age of Brexit and Trump, the West is buffeted by the tides of isolationism and fragmentation. Yet to the East, this is a moment of optimism as a new network of relationships takes shape along the ancient trade routes. In The New Silk Roads, Peter Frankopan takes us on an eye-opening journey through the region, from China's breathtaking infrastructure investments to the flood of trade deals among Central Asian republics to the growing rapprochement between Turkey and Russia.

A metaphor for Asian trade, not the road itself
Revisado: 05-27-19
An interesting discussion of foreign trade, politics and military issues especially in Asia, however, it takes the Silk Road more as a metaphor than an actual Chinese program of interconnected links, describing the strategy behind the total system. I didn't care for the style of the reader but that is a personal taste.

Historia
For anyone interested in foreign affairs, this book will catalyze debate, and not only for Mr. Huntington's concluding scenario for World War III. He sees how this could happen if the U.S. mishandles an increasingly xenophobic and truculent China. Chinese assertiveness, Huntington argues, rises out of its felt grievances against a relatively weakening West. After China, the gravest challenge to the West is resurgent Islamic identity.

Changed my world view
Revisado: 03-19-19
I consider myself up to date on foreign relations issues but this book was a game changer for me. The depth of Huntington's analysis is impressive but the real kicker is that his approach to foreign affairs based on culture is, apparently, seldom considered. Wow! This is some piece of work.

Historia
War with China is much more likely than anyone thinks. When Athens went to war with Sparta some 2,500 years ago, the Greek historian Thucydides identified one simple cause: A rising power threatened to displace a ruling one. As the eminent Harvard scholar Graham Allison explains, in the past 500 years, great powers have found themselves in "Thucydides's Trap" 16 times. In 12 of the 16, the results have been catastrophic.

With authoritative reporting honed through eight presidencies from Nixon to Obama, author Bob Woodward reveals in unprecedented detail the harrowing life inside President Donald Trump’s White House and precisely how he makes decisions on major foreign and domestic policies. Woodward draws from hundreds of hours of interviews with firsthand sources, meeting notes, personal diaries, files, and documents. The focus is on the explosive debates and the decision-making in the Oval Office, the Situation Room, Air Force One, and the White House residence.

Revisado: 11-01-18
There is not too much here that hasn't been covered in the news. It is, however, covered in more detail. When these vignettes are strung together they become shocking. All in all Woodward seems to treat Trump quite fairly, probably hoping for access for his next book on the Trump years.

I wasn't looking for such an in depth portion on religion, although that was well done. I found the book very informative and very provocative. I look forward to listening to Harari's other books.
