Superlative Narration.
Revisado: 02-12-25
I am really enjoying this series. The Stranger Times is gaining a life of its own with recurring characters weaving in and out with new ones. I know much more about Manchester than I ever did before. However, it is the narration that really stands out for me! Each character (and there are many) has their own distinct voice and together with the verbal descriptions, I can see them in my mind’s eyes very clearly. In some ways, I would love to see an adaptation along the lines of Prime Video’s Good Omens but could actors “own” these characters? It would take bloody good actors fluent in Manc to do it!

Historia
As the mists roll over the fens and enigmatic lights twinkle in the distance, only the locals know their way along the hidden paths through the mysterious watery terrain of one of England's most beautiful and sometimes dangerous places. Detective Matt Ballard may have retired but there's still plenty going on in the fens to keep him busy. Someone trashes an old lady's garden and daubs her isolated cottage with hateful graffiti. Emilia Swain seems to be totally harmless, so why is she being targeted?

Weird story. Too much Cold Comfort Farm, not enough mystery.
Revisado: 11-15-24
I’ve enjoyed the police procedural Joy Ellis books especially the Nikki Galena series and I enjoyed the first two of this series which were also set in a police context. This one I found less than enthralling I don’t know if Ms Ellis was rushing to fulfill a deadline or got too overwhelmed by plot complexity but somehow things didn’t hang together. I felt the female protagonist to be profoundly unsatisfactory and the rest of the characters really annoying for being so unwilling to get help for her obvious progressive mental illness. The male protagonist’s niece didn’t seem plausible in her reactions. The ending would have worked better in a movie than a book.

Quill has lived on the Red Pine reservation in Minnesota her whole life. She knows what happens to women who look like her. Just a girl when Jimmy Sky jumped off the railway bridge and she ran for help, Quill realizes now that she’s never stopped running. As she trains for the Boston Marathon early one morning in the woods, she hears a scream. When she returns to search the area, all she finds are tire tracks and a single beaded earring.

Hard to tear myself away
Revisado: 09-17-24
I love this author’s Cash books and have been waiting a while for more stories. This one is set in the present day rather than the 1970s.
The rights and safely of women transcend cultures and this book emphasizes that First Nations women are vulnerable for many reasons. I love the glimpses of traditional culture in amongst cell phones and technology. Her description of Northern woods in winter is spot on. I felt I was there at times. The story is gripping and I binge listened with little time for sleep. Though I thoroughly enjoyed the story of Quill’s quest for justice for an unknown woman, i found myself annoyed with her for failing to think ahead and curb her impulses. Her lack of trust is both her Achilles heel and her saving grace.

Historia
The Periodic Table by Primo Levi is an impassioned response to the Holocaust: Consisting of 21 short stories, each possessing the name of a chemical element, the collection tells of the author's experiences as a Jewish-Italian chemist before, during, and after Auschwitz in luminous, clear, and unfailingly beautiful prose. It has been named the best science book ever by the Royal Institution of Great Britain and is considered to be Levi's crowning achievement.

Even in translation, Primo Levi is a magnificent writer of prose. The pace and content of the chapters varies considerably and the book made an excellent companion on a long solo car journey. I can foresee myself returning to listen again.

Historia
Her name is Renee Blackbear, but what most people call the 19-year-old Ojibwe woman is Cash. She lived all her life in Fargo, sister city to Minnesota’s Moorhead, just downriver from the Cities. She has one friend, the Sheriff Wheaton. He pulled her from her mother’s wrecked car when she was three. Since then, Cash navigated through foster homes and at 13 was working farms, driving trucks.

Cash again
Revisado: 06-21-24
It’s amazing to think that in 2024 Cash would be about 73. She is one of those heroes who one can picture continuing her life beyond the books and I for one would love to know her later story. Here she is at college just starting her adult life with so much strength and resilience because of her super tough upbringing “in the system”. The story seemed a bit more contrived than the first book but I was rooting for Cash throughout. I live in the SE of Minnesota and enjoyed hearing about the farming community life in the Seventies- reminiscent but distinctly different from the farm culture here. Excellent narration.

Historia
Cash and Sheriff Wheaton make for a strange partnership. He pulled her from her mother's wrecked car when she was three. He's kept an eye out for her ever since. It's a tough place to live - northern Minnesota along the Red River. Cash navigated through foster homes, and at 13 was working farms. She's tough as nails, five feet two inches, blue jeans, blue jean jacket, smokes Marlboros, drinks Bud Longnecks. Makes her living driving truck. Playing pool on the side.

A snapshot in time
Revisado: 06-20-24
This is an amazing depiction of life in 1970 in North Western Minnesota. Cash is an interesting person shaped by events and culture that seem quite foreign to our modern mores and lifestyle. I’m a few years younger than Cash and remember the time but in another continent. Cash - self reliant and competent but in many ways scarred and vulnerable seems ages older than I was at her age in the story. Her experiences mirror many taken from their families and raised between cultures. I can hardly wait to delve further into this series.

A balanced account of game changes, conflicts and ambitions. The fall from popular grace of the previously adulated brother of the heir to the British throne as a consequence of his marriage to a beautiful and dynamic Hollywood starlet of colour makes for fascinating listening in best-selling royal author Lady Colin Campbell's balanced account. Lady Colin knows her royal history and psychology, and as the first seven years of her adult life were spent in the USA, she has a foot in both the American and British camps.

This version from 2020. Awaiting updated version
Revisado: 05-05-24
Listening to Lady C on uTube recently gives a this 2020 audiobook a certain period charm because it is clear that her at least some of opinions have changed in the past 4 years! Many of us are awaiting the publication of the updated version of this book with great interest but I would still recommend listening to this original version. Hearing the author striving to be as fair and even handed as possible when discussing the protagonists and hearing her take on events from the 2020 perspective is very interesting. I found some of the anecdotes and discussion a bit repetitive but overall it is a very interesting listen.

Amazing story and performance
Revisado: 03-29-24
I read His Dark Materials some time ago and loved it. I did not, however, enjoy the full cast audiobooks so much. I was in two minds about getting this - but I heard an interview with the Author and thought it so interesting that I took a chance.
All I can say is “WOW”. This audiobook is a tour de force, combining a complex and thought provoking story with Michael Sheen’s absolutely amazing narration. It was hard to stop listening in order to sleep!
It is hard to avoid drawing some parallels between Pullman’s story and the increasing restriction of free thought and expression and the current political flirtations with authoritarianism.

And later, when a fortunate twist of fate returns their father to them, they are surprised to find the old gentleman involved once again.

A true classic
Revisado: 02-29-24
This story was published in 1905 and set in the time of railways and carriages rather than cars and cellphones but the characters are timeless. Human nature remains remarkably constant and we can relate to the people even though we now have a superabundance of technology. This is probably just about the first children’s story set in a realistic “contemporary” world. It has kept its freshness as a story and is a fascinating bit of social history as well. .

Historia
In the peace and tranquility of the woods at Pinehills on a Saturday afternoon, a mobile phone begins to ring. The phone belongs to DC Smith, and it isn't unusual that the call is from Kings Lake Central police station; what is unusual is the fact that he seems to be the subject of an investigation rather than taking part in one. What can the links be between a prisoner's violent death in another county, the disappearance of two teenagers, and the highest profile case in Kings Lake for many years?

Every story so far has been very different from the previous ones while building on what has gone before. The plots are fresh and highlight different aspects of the characters. I am drawn into this world and feel everyone could do with a DC Smith in their lives - he is a knowing old devil drawing on a lifetime of experience. Beautifully narrated!
