In the middle of the holidays, a biological attack wreaks havoc on the U.S. The virus is quick. Deadly. Unstoppable. The country is left in tatters. For Isaac Race, it’s especially bitter. After the death of his parents and sister, he was just getting his life back on track - the weaponized virus changes all that. Battered by the fresh deaths of his foster parents, but hardened by the year he’s endured, he emerges from the temporary safety of his home to seek out other survivors during the worst winter in years.

Well-written, Thought-provoking
Revisado: 01-08-25
The raw, explicit descriptions of events are warranted and do not seem to be used just for shock and awe. In my opinion, the gory descriptions the author gave us carried and accentuated the story appropriately, regardless of how appalling they were.
In Books 1-6, I appreciated the minimal amount of cussing. By books 7-11, F-bombs were flying around like crazy. I do realize that many people really do talk like this. Nevertheless, it was refreshing that in the early books the vulgarity was minimized. It reminds me of the way the F-word made an assault on TV somewhere around 2014. Today, it's hard to find a show that is not flooded with profanity; such is the world in which we live.
All that being said, the stories are well-written, and the post-apocalyptic scenarios are very likely.
I also really appreciated that Adam Barr narrated all the Books. Great job to the author and narrator.

Just Okay
Revisado: 07-15-19
History provides a potentially engaging backdrop for this story. I don't feel Ms. Steel used it to advantage. The characters were not well developed and the narrator's sing-song voice was off-putting.

Historia
What can the call to discipleship, the adherence to the word of Jesus, mean today to the businessman, the soldier, the laborer, or the aristocrat? What did Jesus mean to say to us? What is his will for us today? Drawing on the Sermon on the Mount, Dietrich Bonhoeffer answers these timeless questions by providing a seminal reading of the dichotomy between "cheap grace" and "costly grace."

Reviewing The Cost of Discipleship
Revisado: 08-06-18
Too often we, as Believers in Christ Jesus, confuse the free gift of salvation with what it means to be a disciple of Christ. Our saving has been bought and paid for by the Blood of Christ. There is no interest due, no balloon payment... But to follow Christ as a disciplined Learner is costly. Recognizing Yeshua, Jesus, as Savior is a wonderful thing. Submitting to Him as Lord and Master, well, that is the cost of discipleship.
Bonhoeffer, as was many others, is a true disciple. In the end, he paid with his earthly life to follow wholeheartedly. Together this work (The Cost of Discipleship) and his biography compose a theological yet practical illustration of what it means to be a disciple of Christ.

Historia
Toren Daniels vanished eight months back, and his wife and kids have moved on - with more than a little relief. Toren was a good man but carried a raging temper that often exploded without warning. So when he shows up on their doorstep out of the blue, they're shocked to see him alive. But more shocked to see he's changed. Radically. His anger is gone. He's oddly patient. Kind. Fun. Toren has no clue where he's been but knows he's been utterly transformed. He focuses on three things: Finding out where he's been. Finding out how it happened. And winning back his family.

Somewhat Dissapointing
Revisado: 05-09-18
I generally enjoy James Rubart`s advevtures--a lot. I ordered "The Man He Never Was" on Kindle with Audible narration. It should never have been released. Chapter 31, in particular, was so fraught with do-overs, repetition of words and lines, and the authors complaints about typos (which should have been edited out), that listening became annoyingly painful. It was NOT READY FOR RELEASE. Even fans of the author`s work are likely to feel that money or credits were not well-spent.
The story was interesting. I must add that much. Notwithstanding, it was not good enough to rescue this from being an Audible flop. Hopefully, the producers and editors will clean this up and re-release it. In the meantime, a refund to those who purchased this release would be good business practice.

In her first novel since 2002, Nebula and Hugo award-winning author Connie Willis returns with a stunning, enormously entertaining novel of time travel, war, and the deeds - great and small - of ordinary people who shape history. In the hands of this acclaimed storyteller, the past and future collideand the result is at once intriguing, elusive, and frightening.

Potential Not Realized
Revisado: 03-22-17
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
The bones of a good story are present, but the result turns out to be somewhat tedious, in my opinion. It seems that the author was setting the stage, a necessary step. But I found myself waiting and waiting for the story to get underway. I finally gave up on it after 6 or 7 chapters.

Timeless story uninteresting narrator
Revisado: 02-26-17
Would you listen to Fishers of Men again? Why?
No. Larry McKeever is one of my least favorite narrators. He is not horrible, just mediocre. It takes the joy out of listening, even though it is convenient.
Who was your favorite character and why?
I enjoyed the conext given for the family of zealots.
Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Larry A. McKeever?
Maybe Scott Brick.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
I wouldn't try to relegate this to film. Too much would be lost.

Part 3: Glad to have pushed forward
Revisado: 04-04-16
Parts 1 and 2 left me annoyed because of ridiculously abrupt endings. Perhaps that was an effective ploy, I did go on to remaining books in the series with hardly a pause.
While this series is no masterpiece, it is entertaining with cute characters and just enough humor, pathos and unanswered questions to keep the listener coming back.
The narrator, Nick Podehl, does a really good job--with a small red mark for his British accent (ugh).
Overall, this was fun. Listen to parts 1 - 3 to get the most for your hot-fudge-sundae fiction experience.

Unimpressed
Revisado: 05-11-15
I have read Skip Coryell before. His socio-political leanings are an intricate part of the weave of his stories. That is not problematic for me.
His Christianity, which is also pronounced, is part of why I have listened more than once. It's one of the things I search for when reading or listening to fiction.
However, I will probably not listen to any more of "We Hold These Truths." I have struggled through about half of it and find Glen Russell's narration so monotone and bland that it is annoying.
Although it has unrealized potential, the overall effect of this work (at least up to the half-way point) is a snooze fest . Perhaps it would have been a passable read--not great--just passable. As a listen, however, it has been thoroughly disappointing.
I'm glad I've already listened to a couple other titles by Coryell. If this had been the first, it would also be the last.

A Matter of Taste
Revisado: 06-22-14
Lynn Austin has always been a 5-star read/listen for me. If this had been my first experience with her work, and had it not been for an Amazon reviewer who encouraged readers to stick with this slow-starter, I would have given up listening.
As the story begins, the primary character , as one other reviewer put it, comes across "cliched." While some readers found the story amusing, I found it irritating. It wasn't until several hours in that I became at all engaged.
I remain a loyal reader/listener of Lynn Austin, but this one was just OK for me. I suspect it was intended to be humorous in some respects, but the humor was not to my taste.
If this is your first Lynn Austin, try some of her other titles. She truly is a master of her craft, whether or not this one hit the spot for you.
