Another perfect story by Claire Keegan.
Revisado: 02-21-24
Not a wasted word. A relationship that didn’t work out. Interestingly told through man’s pov. And yet… Keegan’s reading of the story is sublime.

Historia
Thomas McNulty, having fled the Great Famine in Ireland and now barely 17 years old, signs up for the US Army in the 1850s and with his brother in arms, John Cole, goes to fight in the Indian Wars - against the Sioux and the Yurok - and, ultimately, in the Civil War. Orphans of terrible hardships themselves, they find these days to be vivid and alive, despite the horrors they see and are complicit in. Moving from the plains of Wyoming to Tennessee, Sebastian Barry's latest work is a masterpiece of atmosphere and language.

Not your father’s western
Revisado: 07-18-23
Having read several books about the American west in recent years, I didn’t look forward to more cruelty and brutality at this time. There was some of that as well as a stint fighting for the Union in the civil war. These are experienced by a young Irish immigrant who survived famine and an ocean crossing in a coffin ship. Horrible times. But this is a beautiful story of love and loyalty, and how to make a family when you’ve lost yours. Also despite the circumstances of war, weather, poverty, near starvation, our hero has a sense of what is good and decent and lives by this moral code. He also has a rather innocent philosophical outlook, taking what comes and is thankful for the good luck that comes his way, no matter how meager it may seem. Lovely story, beautiful written and narrated.

Historia
In 1950s Dublin, Rosa Jacobs, a young history scholar, is found dead in her car. Renowned pathologist Dr. Quirke and DI St. John Strafford begin to investigate the death as a murder, but it’s the victim’s older sister Molly, an established journalist, who discovers a lead that could crack open the case. One of Rosa’s friends, it turns out, is from a powerful German family that arrived in Ireland under mysterious circumstances shortly after World War II. But as Quirke and Strafford close in, their personal lives may put the case—and everyone involved—in peril, including Quirke’s own daughter.

There are so many tired old tropes in this story. John Lee narration is excellent and only reason I finished this book.

Emily Maitlis is a joy
Revisado: 04-23-23
Absolutely entertaining look at what goes on before, during, and after some of the biggest TV interview gets. Emily’s honesty and humor strike the tone for a fascinating look at her career as a journalist. The interviews are 6+ years old, and the world keeps on moving. Still, the interviewees and topics are very much within recent memory. Most interesting for me is her always asking herself if she’d got it right–often difficult within the constraints of time, place, and personality. This book would make a great gift.

Historia
Miller is unlucky. That's why he's in a foxhole with the rest of Bravo Company. That's why his dad is gone and his mother remarried. That's why his teeth are falling out. Then, when the first sergeant tells Miller his mother has passed away, Miller thinks he's finally gotten lucky. Surely it's another Miller's mother, and now he can get away from the battalion for a couple days thanks to the Army's error. But Miller knows the future rarely has happiness in store.
