Historia
What's happening in global politics? As if overnight, many Democrats revolted and passionately backed a socialist named Bernie Sanders; the United Kingdom voted to leave the European Union; the vituperative billionaire Donald Trump became the presidential nominee of the Republican party; and a slew of rebellious parties continued to win elections in Switzerland, Norway, Italy, Austria, and Greece. John B. Judis, one of America's most respected political analysts, tells us why we need to learn about the populist movement.

Exactly what I needed!
Revisado: 10-02-17
If you even think you might want to know more about this issue, this book is a fantastic listen. The author deals substantially with the subject, while keeping good focus on the modern rise of populism. The author is also quite fair and balanced in approach and rational. The tone is academic and professional, with little to no pundit commentary. It's intended to analyze, not cheerlead one side over another.

Historia
Behind today's headlines of billionaires taking over our government is a secretive political establishment with long, deep, and troubling roots. The capitalist radical right has been working not simply to change who rules but to fundamentally alter the rules of democratic governance. But billionaires did not launch this movement; a white intellectual in the embattled Jim Crow South did.

Thoroughly Researched!
Revisado: 09-16-17
Sometimes tedious or repetitive, MacLean really includes every bit of research in this book. This book was very much worth reading, but if you get bored halfway through, skip to the last audio chapter. Here, she finally makes the connections you've been waiting for. They're worth skipping ahead for.
Keep in mind that the author is a history professor; this book reads like a history research paper. It's tedious and academic in style. The narrator deals with it well.
In the future, I hope MacLean adds another chapter to her conclusions section, to add her insight to more future dialogue on the topic.

Historia
The Founding Fathers tried to protect us from the threat they knew, the tyranny that overcame ancient democracy. Today, our political order faces new threats, not unlike the totalitarianism of the twentieth century. We are no wiser than the Europeans who saw democracy yield to fascism, Nazism, or communism. Our one advantage is that we might learn from their experience.

White Americans have long been comfortable in the assumption that they are the cultural norm. Now that notion is being challenged, as white people wrestle with what it means to be part of a fast-changing, truly multicultural nation. Facing chronic economic insecurity, a popular culture that reflects the nation's diverse cultural reality, and a future in which they will no longer constitute the majority of the population, and with a black president in the White House, whites are growing anxious.

Historia
One of William Faulkner’s finest novels, As I Lay Dying, originally published in 1930, remains a captivating and stylistically innovative work. The story revolves around a grim yet darkly humorous pilgrimage, as Addie Bundren’s family sets out to fulfill her last wish: to be buried in her native Jefferson, Mississippi, far from the miserable backwater surroundings of her married life.

I ended up reading the paper book because parts of the novel are just difficult to follow. The book is meant to be read in paper form; the writing style is far more visual than most. I had no idea what was going on for the first third of the book. This is my first Faulkner book though.

Heavier than anticipated
Revisado: 01-10-17
Several other experts have referred to this book as a fundamental resource. I was not expecting such a textbook though. A heavy analysis of key research in the field reveals a nuanced explanation of the intersection of culture and oppressive system structure. Be prepared to put your thinking cap on, and benefit from Wilson's thorough dissection of most major relevant issues. Very little author bias makes this book a true academic gem.

Completely revised and updated to tackle today’s issues, the 10th Anniversary Edition not only explains what framing is and how it works but also reveals why, after a brief stint of winning the framing wars in the 2008 elections, the Democrats have gone back to losing them, and what can be done about it. In this powerful new volume, George Lakoff delves into the issues that will dominate the midterm elections in 2014, the coming presidential elections, and beyond.

Some great insights here - no matter where you stand on an issue, understanding the conceptual basis is crucial to resisting manipulation. As a linguistics student, I'll probably read Lakoff's other books too.

Historia
In a radical analysis of contemporary classrooms, MacArthur Award-winning author Lisa Delpit develops ideas about ways teachers can be better "cultural transmitters" in the classroom, where prejudice, stereotypes, and cultural assumptions breed ineffective education. Delpit suggests that many academic problems attributed to children of color are actually the result of miscommunication, as primarily white teachers and "other people's children" struggle with the imbalance of power and the dynamics plaguing our system.

If you are looking for a multicultural resource, no matter what your field, this is IT! The principles outlined by Delpit can be applied to almost any field of multiculturalism: communication, collaboration, connection, education, ministry of any kind. This book is NOT just for educators. It is for all. I am thoroughly impressed.

For 25 years, Debby Irving sensed inexplicable racial tensions in her personal and professional relationships. As a colleague and neighbor, she worried about offending people she dearly wanted to befriend. As an arts administrator, she didn't understand why her diversity efforts lacked traction. As a teacher, she found her best efforts to reach out to students and families of color left her wondering what she was missing.

Historia
America's great promise of equality has always rung hollow in the ears of African Americans. But today the situation has grown even more dire. From the murders of black youth by the police to the dismantling of the Voting Rights Act to the disaster visited upon poor and middle-class black families by the Great Recession, it is clear that black America faces an emergency - at the very moment the election of the first black president has prompted many to believe we've solved America's race problem.

Incredibly educational!
Revisado: 09-22-16
Be forewarned: This book is far more political and less social than I anticipated. Also, the author offers relatively little in terms of concrete solutions to the problem of historically entrenched racism in America.
The perspective and educational materials offered in this book make it a must read for anyone interested in the issue of forward thinking race relations. This book is a veritable gold mine of compelling responses to traditional white anti-black rhetoric. Amazing!
The Narrator is awesome, too.
