Historia
A slender novel of epic power and the winner of the Booker Prize 2024, Orbital deftly snapshots one day in the lives of six women and men traveling through space. Selected for one of the last space station missions of its kind before the program is dismantled, these astronauts and cosmonauts—from America, Russia, Italy, Britain, and Japan—have left their lives behind to travel at a speed of over seventeen thousand miles an hour as the earth reels below.

The readers unintelligible accent
Revisado: 03-05-25
The narrator’s heavy upper crust British accent so distracted from the book that I gave up after the first chapter. This is a production fail and not a knock on the book. I would like you to credit my account the $12 fee.

Historia
George Wilson has garnered much acclaim for this shattering and enlightening memoir. Detailing his odyssey from July, 1944 until the following summer, If You Survive is a startling first-person account of the final year of World War II. Wilson was the only man from his original company to finish the war. As a Second Lieutenant, he went ashore at Utah Beach after the D-Day invasion amidst burned vehicles, sunken landing craft, and broken fortifications.

An amazingly humble story of leadership
Revisado: 05-31-19
Wilson’s recounting of 9 months as a combat leader is notable in it’s detail and humbleness. This story is full of empathy and without puffery and bravado. If a young infantry officer wants a preview of “what it takes” this is a pretty good start. A thoughtful reader will fully appreciate the stark distinction between the REMF and a company grade combat Infantry Officer. In the end you will understand his satisfaction with how he acquitted himself. Wilson is the kind of officer the Army should have desperately tried to retain but could not overcome it’s sclerosis.

Historia
For five brief, glorious days in the autumn of 1956, the Hungarian revolution gave its people a glimpse at a different kind of future - until, at four o’clock in the morning on a Sunday in November, the citizens of Budapest awoke to the shattering sound of Russian tanks ravaging their streets. The revolution was over. But freedom beckoned in the form of a small footbridge at Andau, on the Austrian border. By an accident of history, it became, for a few harrowing weeks, one of the most important crossings in the world, as the soul of a nation fled across its unsteady planks.

Too much 1950’s “communist menace “ rhetoric.
Revisado: 03-27-19
Too much 1950’s “communist menace” rhetoric. Not enough story. Although this might be a very good description of our current drift to an authoritarian state.

Historia
As part of the massive Allied invasion of Normandy, three airborne divisions were dropped behind enemy lines to sow confusion in the German rear and prevent panzer reinforcements from reaching the beaches. In the dark early hours of D-Day, this confusion was achieved well enough, as nearly every airborne unit missed its drop zone, creating a kaleidoscope of small-unit combat.

A heart rending accounting of unaccountable braverery
Revisado: 06-25-18
As a much younger and less battle scared airborne infantry officer...1970-1975...this story was moving beyond words. Humbling. It gives us a glimpse of what men can do when the chips are down.

Historia
Before the ink was dry on the U.S. Constitution, the establishment of a permanent military had become the most divisive issue facing the new government. Would a standing army be the thin end of dictatorship? Would a navy protect American commerce against the Mediterranean pirates, or drain the treasury and provoke hostilities with the great powers? The founders, particularly Jefferson, Madison, and Adams, debated these questions fiercely and switched sides more than once.

The small fleet that reveals a very big political and social story.
Revisado: 06-23-18
This story provides the framework for exploring the sectionalism and very partisan political divide of our country’s formative years. Like today, our love affair with the military doesn’t always match our willingness to pay for it!

Historia
Phil Klay's Redeployment takes listeners to the frontlines of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, asking us to understand what happened there, and what happened to the soldiers who returned. Interwoven with themes of brutality and faith, guilt and fear, helplessness and survival, the characters in these stories struggle to make meaning out of chaos. Redeployment has become a classic in the tradition of war writing. Across nations and continents, Klay sets in devastating relief the two worlds a soldier inhabits: One of extremes and one of loss.

Historia
George Washington's Farewell Address was a prophetic letter from a "parting friend" to his fellow citizens about the forces he feared could destroy our democracy: hyper-partisanship, excessive debt, and foreign wars. Once celebrated as civic scripture, more widely reprinted than the Declaration of Independence, the Farewell Address is now almost forgotten. Its message remains starkly relevant. In Washington's Farewell, John Avlon offers a stunning portrait of our first president and his battle to save America from self-destruction.

Relevance to current events

Welcome to 2017.
Any additional comments?
This is a well written, easy to listen, detailed deep dive into a well known (superficially) speech. It is still fresh after 200 years.
