Historia
It’s a beautiful day in Newport, Rhode Island, when Phoebe Stone arrives at the grand Cornwall Inn wearing a green dress and gold heels, not a bag in sight, alone. She's immediately mistaken by everyone in the lobby for one of the wedding people, but she’s actually the only guest at the Cornwall who isn’t here for the big event. Phoebe is here because she’s dreamed of coming for years—she hoped to shuck oysters and take sunset sails with her husband, only now she’s here without him, at rock bottom, and determined to have one last decadent splurge on herself.

Nothing but the last book he was reading. But this is no ordinary book… It is the Book of Doors. Gifted Storyteller
Revisado: 04-17-25
Gareth Brown has a winning story here. The first chapter seems like straight forward storyline and then takes off on wild intricate story that weaves back and forth with so many surprising twists and turns. If you are a fan of Neil Gaiman storytelling you'll appreciate the skill of Brown's storytelling. Narration is good. Plot moves along fast (other than the very first chapter). Characters are easy to "see" and keep track of as they weave in and out of the story. No loose ends - all details in the face-paced storyline are wrapped up. My first book by Brown. Will definitely look for more of his work.

But Matt's new home provides anything but peace and quiet. His new guardian is involved in very sinister things, and the whole town seems to be on her side. The truth is much bigger than Matt or the town, but Matt is the only person who can stop the ultimate evil from being unleashed.

Compelling mysery sci-fi horror magic story
Revisado: 03-27-25
Good verses evil with lots of twists. Who to trust? Young adult audience but enjoyable by adults as well. If you like Neil Gaiman stories and the Harry Potter series, you will probably like this series as well.

Blah. Trite.
Revisado: 01-21-25
I so wanted to like this story. I had to laugh in spite of the authors intended plot with each trite line or cringe-worthy scene where chick falls in love with hulk all the while ducking bullets, poison and solving a murder set in an old mansion full of hidden passage ways and surrounded with the usual suspects as they are all snowed in at Christmas time with no phone lines or electricity. This review run-on sentence is typical of the writing. The performance was as dull as the storyline. Don't waste your credit on this one. I only brought this one book on a long car ride or would have deleted it within 45 minutes.

Historia
Flavia de Luce has taken on the mentorship of her odious moon-faced cousin Undine, who has come to live at Buckshaw following the death of her mother. Undine’s main talent, aside from cultivating disgusting habits, seems to be raising Flavia’s hackles, although in her best moments she shows potential for trespassing, trickery, and other assorted mayhem. When Major Greyleigh, a local recluse and former hangman, is found dead after a breakfast of poisonous mushrooms, suspicion falls on the de Luce family’s longtime cook, Mrs. Mullet.

moving from original precocious child to adult
Revisado: 01-05-25
Read all of the series to date…and will continue to buy this series. But don’t judge the series on this one book as it falls below predecessors in storyline. The narrator saves this book as she is spot on with her interpretation of each characters’ voice. SPOILER ALERTS coming next. Previous secondary characters (father, cook) now have central roles - but they are 180 degree different from the entire series. The setting is a top secret heavily guarded military base that a child sneaks into and escapes. A character discovers her old lovers dead body and stays at the murder scene to create perfect drawings of the crime scene in such detail that it is of photographic quality. Too contrived and forced. Author may be using this book as the pivot point to turn the series main character from precocious child into an adult character.

Compelling story - not typical Grisham legal drama
Revisado: 12-13-23
Have read most of Grisham's legal dramas - this however is not a legal story but rather the rise and fall of a gifted athlete. Grisham's character development is very thorough and the 'reader' becomes very attached to the central character wishing for a good-news ending.

Compelling as story builds to incredible ending
Revisado: 12-13-23
Neil Gaiman stories never fail to entertain. Story of good guys vs bad guys set in macabre setting of a graveyard. And what a twisted story it is. Listened to both the full-cast production and the version narrated by just Neil Gaiman - both are equalling compelling.
