After a routine delivery, midwife Sarah Brandt visits her patient in a rooming house and finds that another boarder, a young girl, has been killed. At the request of sergeant Frank Malloy, she searches the girl's room and discovers that the victim is from one of the most prominent families in New York - and the sister of an old friend. The powerful family, fearful of scandal, refuses to permit an investigation. But with Malloy's help, Sarah begins a dangerous quest to bring the killer to justice before death claims another victim.

I found this new to me author in the Audible Plus section. I really enjoy this type of book. I'm a big fan of the Captain Lacy series by Jennifer Ashley, and the Lady Julia Grey series by Deanna Raybourn. This book is just as good. The story was compelling and kept me interested. The narration was good as well. I'll be using my next credit for the next book. Highly recommend if you like clean historical mysteries.

Historia
Often compared to both Ruth Rendell and P.D. James, Deborah Crombie is internationally acclaimed for her deftly written mysteries that combine suspense, with lyrical prose. Sharply etched characters further enrich this story of tangled relationships and dark secrets. Twelve years after their divorce, Scotland Yard Superintendent Duncan Kincaid receives a phone call from his ex-wife Victoria asking for his help.

unsure
Revisado: 05-04-24
Up until now, I've thoroughly enjoyed this series....having said that, I'm unsure of this one. First, why change narrators?? I loved the old one. Also. this book felt very different from the previous stories. I almost stopped, but half way through it came together. I'll continue because Jemma and Duncan's relationship is growing. Plus, now we have Kit in the mix. This narrator is on for the next couple of books, then goes back to the guy. I'll suffer through until he comes back.

Historia
If any place on God's earth was designed to help one heal, it is Meadowland. Surely here, at her brother-in-law's Kentucky farm, Rose and her daughters can recover from the events of the recent past—the loss of her husband during the 1918 influenza epidemic, her struggle with tuberculosis that required a stay at a sanatorium, and her girls' experience in an orphanage during her illness. At Meadowland, hope blooms as their past troubles become rich soil in which their faith can grow.

This is my first book by AH Gabhart. I didn't know really what to expect. This was not it. I really liked this audiobook, but I'll tell you that the first part of this book is heart wrenching. Rose is separated from her girls and I can't imagine how that would feel. She's in a sanitorium for TB. Her girls are in an orphanage and are severely mistreated....through this all, both mom and girls have faith. I did love that. Enter uncle Dirk who swoops in and saves everyone. After they move to Meadowland things are revealed and hearts are healed. Highly recommend this book. I'll look for more by this author.

gothic??
Revisado: 02-12-24
After I read the reviews of this book I was really excited. Is it like Rebecca? Like the Mistress of Mellwyn? No. No, it isn't . It's not bad, its just not really gothic. It was an ok book. A nice mystery with a dash of romance. Take a chance if you want. I will agree with others that the male voice of Sinclair was hard to hear. Otherwise.....ok.

Revisado: 02-12-24
This is my first book by S Taylor. I normally listen to murder mysteries/thriller. I'm not sure why I chose this novel when it was on sale. At first, I thought it was really slow. This is when the backstory is told, and you are getting to know the characters. I almost stopped listening. I'm glad I didn't, because boy does it turn around! Dottie and Mary have a codependent relationship and Dottie just sinks to the background. Dottie's siter Rita needs a foot up her bum. Ralph and Elton both wind up growing through the book. That was nice to see. Overall, I liked this book and because the way it ended; I might purchase the next book. I really liked the narrator. I'd listen to her again anytime. Give this one a try. But have your Kleenex nearby.

Historia
Home, for Joel Briggs, is the old New England farmhouse on winter road. From the front porch, he listens to the barred owls or watches the towering Christmas tree lit up in the yard. It's a quiet road, kind of like his life. Quiet. Until Faye Weston walks right into it.

Great Read
Revisado: 02-02-24
This is my first read by this author. Somehow, I started with the last book in the series. Oh well. I enjoyed this book, but it was a slow start for me. In the beginning, Faye does some complaining about her circumstances. I thought...oh no, here we go.. a whining heroine But that is not the case. Yes, she does complain some, but its over quickly. What I loved about this book is that it is EASY. What do I mean? In a world of war talks, high inflation and uncertainty, this story was what I needed. It has no high stress circumstances. Just a lot of great writing. I also liked the way the author described the town and people. I wanted to be there! This is a slow burn romance. My favorite. It has a real 'When Harry Met Sally' feel. The love scene is more than closed door, but no descriptive words used. Its a clean read, for sure. I really liked this book despite the slow start. The narrator is great. I've already purchased the first book in the series, even though we are more than a month after Christmas. Highly recommend.

I started out the new year with a bang reading this book. I've never read Sandy Taylor but have listened to Aoife McMahon before. I love this kind of book.....where different people come together and become a family. Some similar titles are Winter Bloom and the View from Apartment B. I love this genre. This book has all the feels. I really needed this right now. I highly recommend and will find more by this author.

I'd give it 10 stars!
Revisado: 11-17-23
This is my first book by Joanne Bischof. I've recently been reading faith based or Christian novels. I've read some I really like, but nothing like this one. Its November and this is the best book I've read (listened to) all year. I normally don't like stories that bounce back and forth in time. But this one is very well done. If you hesitate to get this book because of the 'faith' aspect. Don't let that stop you. It is very uplifting. I'll be listening to this book over and over again. It has trial and tribulations. Loss and heartache. But it ends with a very satisfactory HEA. The narrator is new to me, but she did a great job. I'll be looking at more books by this author. Highly recommend.

Historia
Though American by birth, Frances Wynn, the now-widowed Countess of Harleigh, has adapted admirably to the quirks and traditions of the British aristocracy. On August 12th, each year, otherwise known as the Glorious Twelfth, most members of the upper class retire to their country estates for grouse-shooting season. Frances has little interest in hunting - or birds or a second husband - and is expecting to spend a quiet few months in London with her almost-engaged sister, Lily, until the throng returns.

I started this series because I love the Juliea Grey series by Deanna Raybourn. I wanted something similar. It is.....sort of. I like the writing/characters/storyline. It doesn't have enough romance for me. But I do like the story. I will recommend this series and will read more.
