Historia
It is the spring of 1527. Henry VIII has come to Hever Castle in Kent to pay court to Anne Boleyn. He is desperate to have her. For this mirror of female perfection he will set aside his queen and all Cardinal Wolsey's plans for a dynastic French marriage. Anne Boleyn is not so sure. She loathes Wolsey for breaking her betrothal to the Earl of Northumberland's son, Harry Percy, whom she had loved. She does not welcome the king's advances; she knows that she can never give him her heart.

Worst Narrator Choice Ever
Revisado: 05-29-24
I couldn’t even finish the book because the narrator is nauseating. She’s the worst selection that could’ve been made and she does ALL of the books? Damn shame. She sounds like a crotchety old man pretending to be a woman doing an English accent.

Historia
Just seventeen years old, Henry IX, known as William, is a king bound by the restraints of the regency yet anxious to prove himself. With the French threatening battle and the Catholics sowing the seeds of rebellion at home, William trusts only three people: his older sister Elizabeth; his best friend and loyal counselor, Dominic; and Minuette, a young orphan raised as a royal ward by William’s mother, Anne Boleyn.

Amazing What-If with a GREAT narration
Revisado: 04-05-22
This book is fantastic. Honestly, I’ve already read the entire series and was excited to see an audiobook of the series, though I’ll admit I was nervous about male narration at first. I always imagined it would be someone reading for Minuette as a narrator. But honestly this narrator was phenomenal and he did a wonderful job of catching the air of the series. Though the next two books get much darker, I am beyond ready for the narration!
As for the book, what better thing? Honestly, I LOVE retellings and alternate histories. The idea that Anne’s final baby lived and was a boy is intoxicating, isn’t it? I do wish we had seen more of Anne’s years with Henry after giving birth to William. If the author decided to write on that, possibly a reconciliation with Mary Stafford, her sister, or tales between Anne and Minuette’s mother, I’d adore that. So if you’re here looking for a tale of Anne if she’d not been executed, you won’t find one. But the tale that is told is incredibly intoxicating. Give it a go and have fun while doing so!

Historia
The child of a scheming father and ruthless mother, Lady Jane Grey is born during a time when ambition dictates action. Cousin to Edward VI, Mary I, and Elizabeth I, she is merely a pawn in a political and religious game in which one false step means a certain demise. But Lady Jane has remarkable qualities that help her to withstand the constant pressures of the royal machinery far better than most expect.

A New Appreciation
Revisado: 03-16-22
Spoilers if you don’t know the story.
I never have been a fan of Alison Weir because of her clear distaste for Anne Boleyn. But I gave this one a go because I like the narrators and I hadn’t read a good Jane book yet. It’s given me a fresh perspective on Queen Mary I. I had never seen a humanity portrayed in her like this book did. She has been brandished by history as a hateful woman, and who could blame her for how she grew up so poorly treated? But her hesitance to execute Jane down to the very day of her death is touching in this narration of the events that fold down. It breaks my heart to know that they tried all they could to save Jane while making the kingdom safe. Above all, I think one of the most beautiful heroes of this story is Mrs. Ellen, who is truly in heart if not in fact, Jane’s mother. From birth until death, she is loyal and devoted, and it’s a beautiful relationship to unfold in the pages of this book. The narration is beautiful, I enjoyed all of the readers. This will be one that I repeat a few times, most likely, despite how sad it is. I guess I’m a glutton for punishment!! Lol.
Highly recommend this one.

Historia
January 28, 1547. It is almost midnight, and the cream of English nobility hold their breath as King Henry VIII prepares to face his God. As the royal physicians wring their hands and Archbishop Cranmer gallops through the frigid night, two dispossessed princesses pray for their father's soul, and a boy, soon to be king, snivels into his velvet sleeve. Time slows, and dread settles around the royal bed, the candles dip, and something stirs in the darkness...something, or someone, has come to tell the king it is time to pay his dues.

Haunting
Revisado: 02-13-22
I was captivated by the beginning, with Anne visiting Henry at his end. I think it’s a beautiful and haunting way of bringing Anne to life. I felt like this story was a much kinder and realistic telling of her, which still included the things she was certainly guilty of, but acknowledging her goodness and not making her an evil witch with a b. I thoroughly enjoyed this version and I felt like it really grasped the love that Henry and Anne had. I have always been of the mind that Henry loved Anne up until the end, and this does a perfect job of explaining my feelings about it. The authors note has some particularly good thoughts on it, and how it contributes to his later cruelty and actions. A haunting and beautifully done piece of work. I’m running not walking to Judith’s Katherine Parr piece.

Slightly Repetitive but still GOOD
Revisado: 12-28-20
I don’t know much of Mary Queen of Scots and this book (and the movie with Saorise Ronan) have led me to research the real history in it. It was fascinating to have such a tragic story told from the fictional perspective of those who lived.
(Spoilers ahead if you don’t know the history!) The part I found most compelling was the natural and heartbreaking deterioration of the Shrewsbury’s marriage. I felt every step and every break that happened and I think that is probably the most beautifully written part, other than I went back and forth from hating Mary to loving her. She was so complex and back and forth I went on whose side I was on. A good read for sure. I love PG! She’s a great author.

Decent Narration
Revisado: 12-25-19
It took me awhile to grow accustomed to the voice in this narration. It sounded off to me at first, and even at the end the depiction of the King was really strange, which is why the performance didn’t get five stars. She did a decent job though, and i’ll probably listen again because i’m a sucker for these Tudor novels.

The Best FICTION, hands down.
Revisado: 12-17-19
Yes. It’s FICTION guys. Some of the stuff isn’t going to add up to what really happened, and a lot of what we know about what really happened is speculation anyways. Learn how to tell a story.
Honestly this book is phenomenal. I know it’s not 100% historically accurate but I don’t care. Mary Boleyn is a beautiful narrator for this time. I love her and her story and her love. It’s honestly profound and beautiful. And Vanessa Kirby delivered one hell of a performance on this audiobook. I wish she’d done all of the books. I would buy every one specially. I’ve listened to this audiobook probably 50 times. It’s my all time favorite. I’ve read the hard copy even more. It got me into Tudor England and now I know what is real and what is fiction. Phillippa is hands down the best for Tudor FICTION.
