Exceptional Because Some Facts Were Uncomfortable
Revisado: 04-26-25
Magnificent - well presented. If taken as completely accurate (I believe it to be), the presentation is thoughtful and thorough provking . The author & presentation provide details (both comfortable & uncomfortable) lacking in some other materials. Most enjoyable investment of my time and frequently rapt attention. Well done.

Historia
War as I Knew It is the personal and candid account of General George S. Patton, Jr.'s celebrated, relentless crusade across Europe during World War II. First published in 1947, this absorbing narrative draws on Patton's vivid memories of battle and his detailed diaries, from the moment the Third Army exploded onto the Brittany Peninsula to the final Allied casualty report. The result is not only a grueling, human account of daily combat but also a valuable chronicle of the strategies and fiery personality of a brilliant warrior.

Excellent Education in Every Regard
Revisado: 04-12-25
Masterful presentation of General Patton’s first hand skill and knowledge of war. I was stationed at Bitburg AB and was fascinated with General Patton’s detail, analysis and specific detail of battles, unit movements and personalities in each engagement. General Patton also makes a very useful approach of stating individual names and in most instances his evaluations. It is his evaluations that give us the crucial context of combatants personalities, responses under fatigue or stress and impact these factors had on outcomes. His citation of the name of German officers in many engagements shows General Patton’s own respect for the combatant and opposing leadership quality. General Patton frequently credits many in his commentary often at the General’s own expense. A fantastic record, one which I will personally revisit many time, digging deeper into one of our most famous warriors mind….and that of those with whom he fought the war as well as that of those he opposed. Narrator was very effective in carrying through in delivering the multiple themes and personal emotions of these war time operations.

An epic of remarkable originality, Alone captures the heroism of World War II as movingly as any book in recent memory. Bringing to vivid life the world leaders, generals, and ordinary citizens who fought on both sides of the war, Michael Korda, the best-selling author of Clouds of Glory, chronicles the outbreak of hostilities, recalling as a prescient young boy the enveloping tension that defined pre-Blitz London, and then as a military historian the great events that would alter the course of the 20th century.

Perfect “Eye Opener” - A Learning Experience
Revisado: 08-29-24
I am 76, have read much about WW II and Britain’s collective bravery. Michael Korda’s personal account (including fascinating familial aspects ) was extremely educational. His personal narrative filled incredibly large gaps in my knowledge and understanding of “what actually happened “ in these critical days. Most importantly for me personally, his analysis confirms my own long term opinion. Halifax and Chamberlain intentionally lured Winston Churchill into the Prme Minister’s position, clearly anticipating (far greater than just hoping) Winston Churchill would fail, take the fall & blame for the disaster. Then, subsequently, Chamberlain et. al., could then swoop back in - blameless for failure - and make the appeasement & compromised truce with Hitler. Such duplicitous strategy was the and certainly now always doomed to failure and would have spelled the death of Britain and all of Europe as we have come to know it. “You can not reason with a tiger when you have your head in his mouth!” Only by the true grace of God, did Winston Churchill succeed & literally saved the west from Nazi domination - in one of several “odious” forms. Marvelous performance by Mr. Fisher, greatly enhanced my learning. His command of German & French carried me through those speed bumps that in writing alone would slow my appreciation (my concern of understanding & correct pronunciation). Totally, exceptional writing & performance. BTW, I possess and followed the performance in my own hard backed copy of Michael’s book.

Historia
On Winston Churchill’s first day as prime minister, Adolf Hitler invaded Holland and Belgium. Poland and Czechoslovakia had already fallen, and the Dunkirk evacuation was just two weeks away. For the next 12 months, Hitler would wage a relentless bombing campaign, killing 45,000 Britons. It was up to Churchill to hold his country together and persuade President Franklin Roosevelt that Britain was a worthy ally - and willing to fight to the end. In The Splendid and the Vile, Erik Larson shows how Churchill taught the British people "the art of being fearless."

Exceptional Projection into Critical World History
Revisado: 08-22-24
This is a fresh perspective of a familiar sequence of global events. Very well crafted and exceptionally well presented by the reader. I purposely purchase each text and follow closely the Audible reading. The two mediums work perfectly to create the environment of the full historical event. The reader presents a fine characterization of Winston Churchill. He is skilled in a voice but also in conveying the multiplicity of emotions Winston demonstrated as world history rushed head long into Winston’s life and England’s destiny. I served in the US Air Force, on the ground. I have always revered and held in high honor, the bravery of England’s pilots, the British people’s brave resilience, and Sir Winston Churchill . This book, struck many cords with me and enhanced my appreciation of the individual personalities that created the world we enjoy today. Nicely done — very nicely done!

An Excellent Study In Leadership - War & Peace
Revisado: 08-09-24
Well presented writing & the reading performance enhanced my appreciation of an apparently thorough work. This is not an exhaustive depiction of these three lives, but a well woven interaction of these lives in space and time. Ages, relationships, ranks achieved and important timing of each General’s milestone. This book, when combined with a broader reading of these wars and events is most illuminating. In that regard, do not overlook the Author’s “Notes on sources and acknowledgements”, in his written book (which I enjoyed following throughout the audible performance). It contains some illuminating comments on added sources in which the author placed considerable faith & credit. This was a thoroughly useful and enjoyable experience. Very well done.

Excellent - Exacting & Compelling Object Lessons
Revisado: 07-07-24
Exceptional insights to true problem solving and the new problems a seemingly excellent solution further creates. Create a perfect bomb site, weather, cold, training and above all selected evasive actions caused 80 hits out of 2,000 bombs! Leadership & plain guts of Gen LeMay make the difference. Then comes the moral dilemma……a Faustian bargain? Wow - well written….but even better well reasoned, objective lessons. Who is RIGHT? A very tough review of the American’s winning strategy. Hard to acknowledge, but the truth is there are no RIGHT CHOICES. Imagining being in Gen LeMay’s place or Sec Stimson or President Truman’s dilemma is extremely sobering. By the end of this exceptional work……I admit to NO MORALIZING. Life is tough, these writers demonstrate that war - real war - is simply impossible. I come away truly respecting all of these men.

Exceptional in Every Regard!
Revisado: 05-06-24
The narrator, Paul Boehmer, was superb. His intonation, and specifically, his excellent German literacy made the entire history of The Arms of Krupp come alive. It was hard to put this 972 page book down - in large part because of Mr. Boehmer’s narration. I read the book and followed the narrative with very satisfactory result. I found myself frequently replaying entire sections of his narrative, each time finding deeper meaning and a better understanding of this fascinating world, business and political history. There are volumes of historical value in each chapter. This book and the skilled narration illuminated multiple aspects of World War II history I had been overlooking for more than 50 years of reading, and research. I am most grateful to Audible, William Manchester and especially, Mr. Boehmer for a tremendous experience and terrific learning opportunity. Upon reflection, I was most disappointed to see such a family history come to an end because of its prodigy’s lack of responsibility and interest. History can highlight many disappointing aspects of life and human frailties. Nonetheless, all in all an exceptional education and experience. Well done - all!

Incredibly powerful writing & unparalleled narration! I am over 70 yrs and was brought to tears as Hood’s Texans stormed the field in the nick of time to save the line on S. Carolinians who were fighting against incredible numbers of Federal troops. Regardless of which side - all fought bravely & with unimaginable determination. This narrator brought the Wilderness battles to life in all of its gruesome detail. We must understand these personal sacrifices and unbelievable courage of American men in the field. Their valor and bravery come to life throughout, in this narrator’s voice. I am powerfully educated and humbled in the presence of such bravery in intense, unbelievable fighting.
